Meal Planning: Something a Little Different (Week 5)

Hello everyone!

As you may or may not have noticed there wasn't a grocery haul last week. There was no grocery haul because I didn't go grocery shopping. I had a very busy,very hectic week with work so I ended up going out with friends, scavenging around my apartment for food, and grabbing quick cheap meals from the Whole Foods Hot bar. I ended up spending about $25 for the week on food so I was still within my budget even if it wasn't the most balanced of weekly meals. BUT this week we are getting back on track. But before we get to everyone's favorite part I thought I would share the final monthly totals for July!


Monthly recap

July grocery budget = 150 dollars (30 dollars/week for 5 weeks)

Actual amount spent in July = 116.44

(33.56 UNDER budget!!!!)


Overall I'm pretty happy with my spending in July, I feel like I used the items in my freezer well and was able to actually cook for quite a bit of the month. I was only lazy and grabbed a ready meal a couple times this month and that is pretty great. In August I want to really focus on using food more efficiently. I still have some food waste even with meal planning so I really want to be more conscious of freezing/preserving what I can before it goes bad (hopefully that should reduce my spending even more). This month I also want to start brainstorming some freezer meals, and get some bulk prep planned out for September. I'll be moving at the end of the month so I don't want to put anything new in the freezer but when I get to my new place I want to have a plan to start restocking my freezer with easy meals especially since my schedule is going to be insane next year. 


Now onto the first grocery haul of August. 


Grocery Items:

  • 1 box of corn chex
  • 1 package of pork chops
  • 1 package of chicken breast
  • 1 package of chicken drumsticks
  • .58 pounds of cous cous
  • .2 pounds of sesame sticks
  • 1 lemon
  • 2 potatoes
  • 1 onion
  • 1 piece of ginger
  • 1 package of spinach
  • 1 pound of arborio rice

Personal Items

  • 2 pack of paper towels 



Grocery total for the week = 28.59 (1.41 under budget)

Personal item total for the week= 3.99


Meal plan

  • Sunday: Lemon Chicken Risotto with spinach salad
  • Monday: Leftovers
  • Tuesday: Shake and Bake Pork with roast seasoned potatoes
  • Wednesday: Leftovers
  • Thursday: Honey soy ginger chicken drumsticks with rice and peas
  • Friday: Leftovers
