Things We Carry -Free Verse

I used to have this

Backpack

That I would just

Shove

All of my stuff into

And forget about it.

Pens

Pencils

Papers

Tests

Homework

Gym clothes

Sticky notes

Erasers

Snacks

Gum

Cards

Notes

Anything you could ever want or

Not ever need again,

I probably had it in that backpack.

But in my arms,

I would hold

Important things like

Test reviews

My english binder

Math homework

At least two journals

A book

Biology notes

Guided readings

Any paper from the last

Month

Would be there,

In that pile.

Why is that

Such a goo image of

Life?

We carry on our backs

Such burdens

That don't matter.

We bring them with us

Wherever we go

Things that aren't even important

Things we should

Just leave at home

Things we should clean out.

And in our delicate arms

We hold the burdens

That weigh us down so,

Holding them tightly

Hoping no one else can

See them

The worst embarrassment being

If we fell

And spilled them all over the ground.

And the burdens

The weight

The pain

Gets worse

And worse

And worse

Until we can barely

Walk down the hallway

These things we carry

Will never get better

Until we learn

To

Let

Go...
