We Heart The Eighties Movies

There was so much love shown for The Princess Bride in the comments on our SAS post about daisy chains last week, it got us thinking about our favorite '80s movies—the best thing to come out of that decade other than legwarmers. (Thank you, John Hughes and Tom Cruise.)

You know them, you love them, you quote them to impress members of the opposite sex. In fact, we believe any one of these films could singlehandedly unite the world into one utopian, "We Are the World"-singing land of peace and prosperity. If we could only get Ahmadinejad, Kim Jong Il, and Obama in a room together and roll Goonies...

If you don't have them already, you absolutely must add the following movies to your library (you'll thank us in college when your dorm room doesn't get cable):

The Princess Bride

Premise: Snooty princess-to-be has hot farmboy wrapped around her little finger. Farmboy becomes pirate to impress her.

Favorite quote: "My name is Inigo Montoya. You killed my father. Prepare to die."

Don't miss: ROUSes, Billy Crystal

The Breakfast Club

Premise: Motley crew of stereotypical teens are forced to talk to each other during Saturday morning detention.

Favorite quote (TIE): "We're all pretty bizarre. Some of us are just better at hiding it, that's all," and "Shut up, b**ch. Go fix me a turkey pot pie."

Don't miss: Emilio Estevez's dance scene, Judd Nelson's perfect ending of a fist pump

Top Gun

Premise: Tom Cruise flies really, really, really fast planes. No, he's not overcompensating for something. Why do you ask?

Favorite quote: "That's a negative, Ghostrider. The pattern is full."

Don't miss: The homoerotic volleyball scene, Mav's ingenious pick-up attempt (we've seen this pulled off in real life, and it worked).

Dirty Dancing

Premise: Good girl summers with her family at idyllic family camp in the mountains, meets bad boy, learns to do the horizontal mambo.

Favorite quote (TIE): "Nobody puts Baby in a corner," and "I carried a watermelon."

Don't miss: Patrick Swayze's rippling muscles.

The Goonies

Premise: Motley crew of young friends searches for pirate's hidden treasure.

Favorite quote: "Baby Roooof!"

Don't miss: the Truffle Shuffle

Footloose

Premise: Kevin Bacon doesn't just think, he knows he can dance— he's just not allowed to for religulous reasons.

Favorite quote: Let's be honest, this movie is about the moves, not the dialogue. But if we had to pick one... "Did you ever get busted for boppin'?"

Don't miss: Warehouse dance scene (sometimes a guy's just gotta gymnastically dance by himself in an abandoned warehouse)

Ferris Bueller's Day Off

Premise: The coolest effing high school kid ever needs a personal day from school. Hilarity ensues.

Favorite quote: "Bueller.... Bueller... Bueller."

Don't miss: Jennifer Grey (aka "Baby")

Can't Buy Me Love

Premise: McDreamy before he was McDreamy is a high school dork who shells out the cash from his lawnmowing busines to rent a cool girlfriend.

Favorite quote: "Quinton is in, let the fun begin!"

Don't miss: the African Ant Eater ritual

Any favorite '80s movies you'd like to add to our list?
