Day Without a Gay   Dec 10, 2008

December 10 is International Human Rights Day. This year, it’s also Day Without a Gay. Gay Americans are encouraged to “call in gay” to work, protest, refrain from shopping, and volunteer. The idea is to draw attention to the fiscal and social importance gay people have in society, and to argue that as contributing citizens, gay Americans should have full and equal rights.

Is anyone observing Day Without a Gay in your community? Are you participating? Have you noticed a marked impact on your school or office? What do you think of the project in the first place—is it a useful idea?

Let me be the first to say that “Day Without a Gay” is a great idea, especially considering the discrimination epidemic that seems to be sweeping through the nation. I think that this could really prove a point to some of those people who really see a problem with homosexuality. Those who are heterosexual, such as myself, should care about other beings as human, and put aside their sexual orientation

[1] Posted by: kaykayRV526 | December 10th, 2008 at 5:08 pm

I am also heterosexual and I completely agree. On top of my orientation, I am also a practicing Roman Catholic (actually, I probably fall under the category of “cafeteria Catholic” but thats for another day…). It would seem that by demographics alone, I would fall into the descriminating group. However, religiously speaking, I believe that God is Love and the fact that a homosexual finds their love with a person of the same gender is miniscule compared to the big picture, love. Politically and legally speaking, I am a firm believer in the separation of Church and State and sure seems like that is the base of this issue. I would say the majority of people against it are becasue of religious reasons, which the government cannot use to deny them legal rights.

I find this event amusing, but also a bit obnoxious.
I’m heterosexual, and I do think that gays should have rights just as any other person does.
And yet, if they have jobs;
a) they are obviously not being oppressed that much since they were hired, though they might be harassed by coworkers. But to coworkers, they might just as well have been sick.
b) isn’t it kind of dangerous to “call in gay” with the economy as it is and so many people being fired?
Sure, Call in Gay…but i don’t think it will make an impact.

I think that Day Without a Gay is only the first in a series of steps in the right direction. Whether your homosexual, bisexual, or heterosexual, you should be able to pubically display your love for your significant other. Whether you wish to marry a man or a woman, people should be able to marry whomever they like & no one should ever tell them otherwise.

[4] Posted by: sillygirl_1313 | December 10th, 2008 at 8:33 pm

That’s stupid. I’m all for gay rights, but why avoid working if you’re looking for social equality rather than financial equality? There are better ways to make an impact. Also, wasn’t there already a day without a Mexican?

[5] Posted by: usernamedesired | December 10th, 2008 at 11:56 pm

I think gays should have all the rights in the world, but a day to skip out because your gay?! I just think that it’s lazyness. Is there a “Day Without A Straight”? I don’t think so. I think that bringing so much attention to this is aggrivating. I think with the economy the eay it is, people should be grateful they still have their jobs and not calling out of work to further draw attention.

I dont believe in gay rights… im sorry but i just dont… What i really dont like is hypocrites who cant stand gay guys but love gay girls… If your out there you are a hypocrite! I dont like gay people and i dont believe in equal rights for them

[7] Posted by: WaltDaMan | December 11th, 2008 at 1:14 pm

well, WaltDaMan, I feel sorry for you. But your opinion is your opinion. And as long as you don’t discriminate against them personally, then you can keep it. As for the religious nuts who think being gay is a sin, believe what you believe, but leave the judging between them and God. It is none of your business. If God really doesn’t want people to be gay, then that is His right to judge. I am sorry but I have never heard of anything in the bible about Him wanting everyone else to judge the sinners for Him. And personally, I don’t consider being gay a sin. It is all about love and that is what God really looks for.

[8] Posted by: sjsimom | December 11th, 2008 at 1:39 pm

actually the old testament is full of orders on what to punish and who to stone for the lists of things that are “sins”. i’m not saying i agree with any of it but it’s there. my personal belief is that the verse about how “a man should not lay with another man” or whatnot was because the society it was made for was trying to rebuild its numbers and if you’re gay you probably aren’t adding to the population. that’s not really a concern anymore and i agree that jesus’ message was all about loving your neighbor and leaving the judgment to god. and i really think that we should be worrying about things that hurt people like criminals and not waste so much time and effort on who is allowed to express their love legally. and one last thought for you to chew on: i wonder what the percentage of same sex marriages that have happened in states where it is legal end in divorce?

[9] Posted by: mrsspidercrabs | December 14th, 2008 at 5:56 pm

I think people over react way to much. I mean come on people its one day they can “legally” skip work and make cookies for their “partners” I just think everyones paranoid in them actually being normal human beings. Gay people are not aliens they just have different sexual emotions than you do… So what!

Hmm well im all for ppl standing up for themsevles, but to call in gay? Wat if ur co-workers didnt kno tht u were go at first? I understand how doing this can get som attention, but i personally dont really see the point. I dont really kno of any major rights tht gay ppl are denied besides marriage. & i dont think tht gays ppl sud be able to get married, it seems morally wrong. Im not full on relgious but i do kno tht god had adam marry eve not steve. I have nothing against ppl just bc they like who or wat they like, its not right to judge anyone, but wen it comes down to it i feel tht marriage is very important & its always been between a man & a woman. It might not sound right but i honestly dont feel tht gay ppl sud get married, other than tht they do deserve respect.

[11] Posted by: MandM1724 | December 16th, 2008 at 9:36 pm

sudnt not sud, i messed up at the end.

[12] Posted by: MandM1724 | December 16th, 2008 at 9:38 pm

Another correction i was right at first, they sudnt get married.

[13] Posted by: MandM1724 | December 16th, 2008 at 9:41 pm

I’m heterosexual and don’t agree w/ being homosexual, however, I’m not a homophobe. I thought that the day without a gay was a great idea for protesting. However, I didn’t notice anything different. I live in an extremely liberal neighborhood, so there are many homosexuals and other people whose lives “push the envelope”. So, that was my opnion!

[14] Posted by: 6ozsteak | December 16th, 2008 at 11:07 pm

I’m staight and a Christian and God says that being gay is wrong and that’s all the explanation I need. Gays should have rights as people, but allowing them to marry is just redicoulous. It’s just disgusting God made Adam and Eve not Adam and Steve!!!

[15] Posted by: 11vegeta11 | December 17th, 2008 at 9:57 am

oooo dont preach us your christian bull shit, the bible says alot of stuff u know you being here on the internet bashing other people well thats a sin too, now im a christian so i also beilieve in god but i dont think god really cares, yah maybe when i wrote it he origanally didnt want it but now i dont think he even cares, i mean our preachers preach to us about everything happens for a reason no come on if god did not want us to marry the same sex i really dont think he would allow it do u?

[16] Posted by: balletprincess17 | December 17th, 2008 at 10:45 am

hii i agree with a day with out a gay..
becuz we need to have equal rights just like everyone else
it doesnt matter if your gay or not we need the right to get married
also!!!i dont think bein gay is wrong..im a lesbian and i want the right also to
get married with the person i want to spend the rest of my life with! :)

[17] Posted by: catluv92 | December 17th, 2008 at 6:13 pm

I don’t understand how you people can “not like gay people” and disagree with being homosexual. How can you disagree with the way someone is? Homosexuality is not a choice. It’s not like gay people just woke up one day and said, “I think I’m going to check out my own sex for a change.” Furthermore, homosexuality is not confined to the human race; in fact, it has been documented in many other species. In particular, penguin males have been known to pair up and use a rock as a surrogate egg, nursing it as though it were offspring. In a zoo in New York, they had a gay penguin couple, and they replaced the stone with a real egg. The penguins took care of the chick and raised it as any couple would. You can’t agree or disagree with homosexuality; that’s like saying “I don’t agree with people having a different skin colour than my own.” It simply doesn’t make sense.

[18] Posted by: xkublaix | December 18th, 2008 at 4:06 am

Also, in the Old Testament, they also stoned adulteresses. Now we give them TV shows.

[19] Posted by: xkublaix | December 18th, 2008 at 4:12 am

Personally, i think that this is just wrong. “Calling in Gay” isnt really going 2 do anything, other that proving that youre gay 2 both ur boss nd ur coworkers. I think that they should have the same rights, but i think getting legally married is going a little to far. This “Call in Gay” day is already over, but i really dont care. I think its completely rediculous.

[20] Posted by: Jessiesbigsis94 | December 18th, 2008 at 5:30 pm

To those of you saying you think its “ridiculous and unnecessary” do not understand because you are not the ones who can’t marry the one you love simply because they are of the same gender. And you are not the ones who can’t adopt children in some states because of your sexual prefrence. Maybe you would understand if the injustice was happening to you. I think “A day without gay” is a great think because people should realize how important gays our to the community. They are regular people; your son’s techer, the mailman etc. And why should they work as hard, if not harder, when they are not given the same rights as everyone else? Who is the government to tell us who to love, and who to spend the rest of our lives with? Speaking as someone with two mothers, I find it so unfair that my parents cannot marry and enjoy the same rights that a hetero-married couple can.

[21] Posted by: qwertyshkff | December 18th, 2008 at 8:34 pm

What is wrong with this world? How can anyone think that a gay relationship is right? So many ppl think that you should go ahead and be gay if that makes you happy. We should all just be able to do what feels good. So does that mean i should be able to go rob a bank because it makes me happy? I should kill that guy i dont really like-because i want to? They are all sins, along with things that seem small, like jealousy and lust. They all deserve death. No sin is right, so homosexuality is not right. Like other sins, God forgives it and loves the people who commit it, just like he loves everyone else.
For you ppl who won’t listen to God- homosexuality is also biologically wrong. Obviously a man and a man cant naturally have a baby together. They dont have the right reproductive organs to make a baby togather. God’s not the only one who tells us homosexuality is wrong- science tells us too.

[22] Posted by: ChemFreak243 | December 19th, 2008 at 1:50 am

ohmygoodnes, THANK YOU chemfreak.
Not only does God say being gay is wrong, science does too. So don’t go snapping at the Christians (even though I personally don’t follow a specific religion, I’m not against theirs either).
What if everyone in the world were gay? Or the majority? There wouldn’t be enough reproduction and everyone would be in moral chaos.
There are enough drag queens and lesbian porno stars as it is, thank you.

[23] Posted by: seriouslyceri | December 19th, 2008 at 7:22 pm

xkublaix, I completely agree with you.
Just because homosexuality was stated “wrong” in the bible does not mean that it needs to be banned from the world. Just because it’s printed on paper for holy worshippers doesn’t mean that it’s going to erase all homosexuals from this world. …and science will not be of much relevance to this situation anyway, because it’s not like they were shipped off and were told: “You’re biologically retarded, sir”.

[24] Posted by: SaccharineLies | December 19th, 2008 at 9:35 pm

Murder won’t be “banned” from the world either. No sin can be “banned” from the world. People will always sin. And no one said anything about erasing homosexuals from the world. And when i talked about science, my point wasn’t that gays should be shipped away, i dont know how you got that out of it. My point was that science proves that a man was not made to love a man in a sexual way. Their reproductive organs can’t go together to reproduce. It is biologically wrong.

[25] Posted by: ChemFreak243 | December 19th, 2008 at 11:56 pm

I think that it’s great that these people are willing to stand up for themselves. Just because someone has a certain sexual orientation, it doesn’t mean that we should treat them differently. And, if you don’t agree with gay marriage, then don’t get one!
I’m a Christian, and yes, it does say in the Bible that a man shouldn’t lie with a man, but it also says we shouldn’t wear clothes woven with mixed fibers (something everyone does these days). Sometimes things change, and even if you think it doesn’t, it’s not up to you to judge these people. Leave that to God.
Basically, if you think it’s wrong, fine…just be respectful and treat them like everyone else.

[26] Posted by: eaglesfan08 | December 20th, 2008 at 1:54 am

Im not judging anyone. Im not saying im any better than a gay person when it comes to sinning, because i know i’m not. And i’m not saying gays should be treated differently. I just want to make the point that all sinning is wrong, homosexuality is a sin, so homosexuality is wrong. I dont think its wrong, i know its wrong, just like every bad thing I’ve done. I want people to know that it’s not right, like everyone knows murder isnt right. But i do leave the judging to God, it is his job.

[27] Posted by: ChemFreak243 | December 20th, 2008 at 9:58 am

ChemFreak, you’re funny. And just a tad disturbing. A man cannot love a man because they can’t have children together? WHAT?!

[28] Posted by: lucepuss | December 20th, 2008 at 11:37 am

Oops, hit submit too early.

Why does the ability to have children have anything at all to do with ones capacity to love someone? Women normally hit the menopause around the 50yr old mark and can no longer concieve - does this mean it’s ‘biologically wrong’ for them to be in a relationship with their husband? Should that marriage all of a sudden be dissolved?

You actually scare me. I thought ridiculous, selfish, misinformed and ignorant opinions like yours and others on display here were on the decrease, but it seems that there are still people in the world as intent on causing pain and suffering as there ever was. Why on earth is it anyone’s business who I or anyone else choose to fall in love with? Live your own life the best way you know how and let others live theirs the way they want to. I can only hope you are about 12 years old living in a tiny village somewhere who has yet to experience the real world.

[29] Posted by: lucepuss | December 20th, 2008 at 11:44 am

I didn’t say a man can’t love another man at all. I said not in a sexual way. There’s nothing wrong with a man loving his brother, dad, good friend, or whatever. It’s wrong when it becomes sexual- and marriage was made for a man and a woman.
I’m not intent on causing pain and suffering, im not preventing anyone from being gay. Pain and suffering will be when a person is burning in hell because they chose to ignore the truth and continue in their sin. Maybe i just want people to know that, so maybe i can point someone in the right direction and help prevent pain and suffering (in hell) for someone, even just one person. That’s why it’s my business. Maybe someone will take my advice.
Im not saying a gay person will automatically go to hell. They, just like anyone, can ask for forgiveness and God will give it to them.

[30] Posted by: ChemFreak243 | December 20th, 2008 at 12:16 pm

This article is really interesting, and i think its a great idea. I am heterosexual but one of my family members is not, and i really think that the world needs to open up their minds and their hearts to new ideas. I mean why would god put people on this earth just to condemn them to hell? ( btw i am a christian) Isn’t god supposed to be all merciful? Also going away from the religious aspects of this topic. The government can not say what people can do according to the bible…..hello separation of church and state. Homosexuals are not committing any crimes by practicing their love for one another, and they are not doing anything/hurting people who do not agree with their beliefs. Also gays can and do have children all the TIME, with the way that modern science is today there are many different ways for them to conceive. (and why should them not being able to conceive children make there martial partnership illegal?)

[31] Posted by: Bacongirl72 | December 20th, 2008 at 2:34 pm

God is merciful and doesnt put ppl on earth to condemn them to hell. But we dont automatically just go to heaven.
Gays having babies together is just sick and not natural. With modern science they can have children? Please explain that to me. The only way they can have a child is if they adopt.
It really saddens me that so many people who claim to be Christian support a sin so strongly. Would you support an alcoholic by giving him beer?

[32] Posted by: ChemFreak243 | December 20th, 2008 at 3:40 pm

your views and closed mindedness make me sad. for you

[33] Posted by: Bacongirl72 | December 20th, 2008 at 3:44 pm

Why? What am i going to lose by not supporting a sin, by not just following the crowd? Should i think homosexuality is right just because everyone else does? I can’t do that. My concern for these people is out of love. Not hate.

[34] Posted by: ChemFreak243 | December 20th, 2008 at 3:56 pm

I personally don’t know what to think about the subject.. I dont have any gay friends so I have no idea what it’s like to be gay in our world today, but I do believe gay people deserve rights, just like the rest of us. I’m also a Christian, and I know what the Bible says, which leaves me feeling conflicted about gay marriage… but that doesnt mean I believe that all gay people should be condemned and not allowed to be happy.. so for those of you out there who aren’t Christian, please don’t judge my religion by those who elevate it to an extreme level of intolerence..

[35] Posted by: eculp323 | December 20th, 2008 at 5:23 pm

Why does it have to be marriage? What is wrong with domestic partners or some other legal partnership? Marriage has forever been between a woman and a man. I have no problem with gays getting the insurance and benefits married people do but calling it marriage is wrong. I believe its an attack to those that believe marriage is Holy Matrimony between a man and woman. Chemfreak you make some very good points and I don’t think you are being selfish, close minded or other things stated above. People say it is we who are close minded and hateful because we do not agree it should be called marriage. It is they who are close minded who want to offend those that hold marriage to a much higher standard. A lot of motorcycles on the road look like Harley’s and sound like Harley’s but they’re not called Harley’s because of the characteristics. You can paint any tractor green but that doesn’t make it a John Deere, no matter how bad it wants to be one. Point being you can have all the same characteristics of a married couple and only be a couple.

[36] Posted by: 1machinist | December 20th, 2008 at 5:27 pm

i think this is a horrible idea. first off, it is wrong to be gay. im gonna be frank. im not homophobic, and im not a gay hater. but the bible clearly states that homosexuality is wrong in 1 Corinthians 6:9-10 (NKJV). being gay is a sin, and you will go to hell. not to be rude or anything. just today, i saw a commercial starring wanda sykes (recent lesbian) and teenagers were sitting at a diner and one said “thats so gay!”. suddenly, wanda appears and says something along the lines of “hey! thats rude. thats like saying “oh, this pepper shaker is so teenage boy with a cheesy moustache!” watch what you say. it might offend people.” and then the slogan “watch what you say” comes on the screen. personally i find this abominable. people use the phrase “thats gay” because being gay is wrong and they should be able to use that phrase! theyre not saying “thats so polish!” or “that’s so mexican immigrant!”. that’s wrong. now when people say “well if being gay is a sin, and Jesus died for our sins, then didnt he forgive the gay people?” to answer that, Jesus did die for all the gay people and the murderers and the adulterers, but, as with everyone, you have to ask for forgiveness to be forgiven and you have to be truly sorry. people have been forgiven and have overcome their gayness before, thus proving you are not “born gay” and no one has “had gay tendencies since birth”. yes, some men can tend to be more feminine than others, and some women can be a bit more masculine than most, but that doesnt make them homosexual.

[37] Posted by: Hillsongxluvrx94 | December 20th, 2008 at 9:37 pm

I first would like to say how ridiculous I think it is that people are considering being gay to robbing a bank or committing a murder. Being gay isn’t a crime (you may believe it’s a sin, but honestly their not hurting anyone except themselves if you do believe that it’s a sin).
I am Catholic and while I do not, for lack of a better word, encourage homosexuality, I also do not condone it. I believe a person should have the right to chose who they want to love and how. I personally do not feel comfortable using the term marriage when it refers to a union between two people of the same gender solely because to me marraige is a religous term referring to the union of man and wife. So based on that definition of marriage legally I don’t think the term should be used to describe the union between same-gender couples. Actually watching an episode of Oprah a homosexual couple said it was not the term that bothered them as much as the lack of rights (this of course it not speaking for all same-gender couples, that would be an enormous overgeneralization). Furthermore, I have no opposition to same-gender couples recieving the same rights as heterosexual couples, and think they should recieve the same rights.

I always enjoy quiet and civil disobedience, especially when performed by a abused minority merely trying to exercise their rights to the pursuit of happiness. Although, I support it the the fullest, I do not know how much it really accomplished. NOW, if the illegal immigrants did that and the 3rd world factory workers too, THAT would really show their pull in this country.

[39] Posted by: drew949 | December 21st, 2008 at 2:34 am

As a Lutheran turned Deist I feel compelled to point out that in order to receive the forgiveness of sins from Jesus Christ’s death and rebirth all you have to do is believe in him. You do not have to truly feel bad about what you did for it states that whosoever believes in him will not perish but have eternal life. Also I take this to the extreme in that only those who believe in him as the son of God have to worry about either going to heaven or hell and the rest of us have other things in store for our souls.

Also while I’m all for gays getting married I would be willing to settle for something of a different name as long as they will still get the same benefits as a state recognized married couple receive. With science they can still have a child they simply need a willing donor of sperm/egg and now we can even turn an egg into sperm so a lesbian couple could have a child who is truly a biological melding of the two of them. I’m not entirely sure why we can’t do the reverse with sperm but it probably has something to do with the structural differences between sperm and egg(I’m a chem major not biology so I really have no idea.)

I have both lesbian and gay friends and frankly the thing that they would most like is not necessarily the name of marriage for their union but the same governmental benefits that are provided to those with such a union.

Homosexual?

Worried how precarious your hard-fought-for position in society is?

Want to make it worse by taking unnecessary days off work in the middle of an economic crisis?

…Call in Gay!

[41] Posted by: featuredteacher | December 22nd, 2008 at 10:41 am

So how does someone know they are gay? Is it because they are taking some feeling and confusing it? I know I love my friend Cody, but I’m not gay. We’re just that good of friends. I hate the people who say that other people are born gay. Its a preference. If they wanted to they could like women to. Personally I hate the agenda that these people are pushing. If your gay then fine we don’t care. Just leave us out of it. For instance, have you ever noticed that they will make out right where everyone can see just because? Not all of them but a lot. So your gay. I don’t care. I don’t want to watch straight people making out in public either. This Call in Gay is just another attention thing. Get over it. No one cares.

[42] Posted by: Ari7400 | December 22nd, 2008 at 11:18 am

I personally don’t think that gays should have rights. It’s simiply disgusting and immoral. I honestly don’t really care about “This Call in Gay”, they can fight for however long they want - but they will never be completley accepted. Plus, even scientifically it’s wrong. If the whole world were to be gay they human race would completley deminish. Disgusting humans, REPENT!

I believe “Day Without a Gay” thing is great. I am personally not gay myself, but hey, who are we to tell people that the aren’t aloud to be attracted to the same sex. I’ve always grown up believing that you are born gay and with this in mind I believe we have no right to tell people that they aren’t allowed to get married to the same sex, etc. I think with all this nonsense about people fighting against gays and gay marriage that we are not allowing people to be themselves, which is never right. I don’t think that people should be ashamed of who they are or who they want to be. “Day Without a Gay” is certainly a very good idea, it’s something that nobody should shun or take offense to. Everyone is unique in their own way and everyone has the right to show that their unique. Oh….and everyone has rights (*not directing this to InavalidNickname who posted on December 23, 2008 at 4:36pm at all*). :]

I have a few angry opinions about posts up until this point.
1) Religion (if you follow one) is supposed to guide you on the path that whichever higher power you believe in wants you to take. It doesn’t give you a license to decide what is morally, biologically, or ethically wrong for others to do.

2) Overpopulation is a serious problem that will eventually rid the planet of the human species. If being gay is biologically wrong because they don’t produce children when they commit sexual acts, then contraception is also wrong. Without contraception, even more women would be having unwanted babies. Think: how did the 21-year-old mother of Caylee Anthony solve this problem? Gays are doing us a favor by not producing more people to pollute the earth and consume resources.

3) I’m sure many people have called off work to go shopping, to lie around and watch tv, or to do something sinful or useless. Is it really so horrible to call off work to volunteer time for a social injustice.

4) Do heterosexuals own marriage? Is it ours?
Seriously… Let it go. Gays are people too. How much are homosexuals encroaching on your basic human rights? Stop using religion or biology or whatever as an excuse to hate.

Slavery was established on the assumption that African Americans were like animals, so whites should have dominion over them. Men quoted bible passages while they wrote in their journals about how they lashed black men’s backs open with leather whips and raped their wives.

Whoops…my links got messed up.

*Ensue rant*
Let’s start off with the Christians. I could go all day about them. Believe me, I once was one (I left the church after finding out that “God” doesn’t love me because I’m gay).

Leviticus. What pferdscheiße. Have any of you Christians who quote the passage about “a man should not lie with another man?” It’s in the middle of a rant about the female menstrual cycle and cleanliness. It also talks about how a woman must go talk to the high priest and sacrifice some type of bird (if you don’t believe me Christians, pull out your bible). It also talks about not being able to wear clothing made of different threads (i.e. cotton/polyester blend). If these are not followed out, they are punishable with death. You know? It’s funny. I thought that MURDER was a sin? So the punishment for a sin is WITH A SIN?

Next topic. Preference.
Sexual orientation is NOT a preference. It is NOT a choice. Sexual orientation is a possibility of the following theories: (1) hormone imbalance during prenancy/conception (2) genetics (3) environment (i.e. traumatic experience, lack of father/mother figure). Personal opinion, I believe that it is a combination of 1 and 2. The environment theory allows the possibility of reparative therapy, i.e. the ability to make someone change their sexual orientation via psychological therapy (usually with the word of Jesus Christ too). This is EXTREMELY scarring to the patient and can make for a terrible life. If you don’t believe me, read the American Psychological Association’s Resolution on Reparative Therapy found here.

Here’s an article that basically describes my thoughts on Christianity and homosexuality, found here.

Can’t we all just get along in love, peace, and harmony?

*End Rant*

A Day Without Gay? It kind of sound like discrimination, doesn’t it? I have nothing for or against homosexuals, but a better name for the holiday might suffice. Personally I don’t know anyone close enough to me to tell me they are calling in Gay, but I, or most other people for that matter, don’t call in for our sexual orientation matters.
I don’t think that murder or people trying to oppress homosexuals is right, it’s absolutely wrong. But I personally don’t think this is a good way to help them either.

[48] Posted by: SupaFNC | December 29th, 2008 at 8:34 pm

Yes, I am a Christian. And I believe that Homosexuality is wrong and unsound.

Choice: It is a choice. I should know–I was a homosexual once, and I stopped. You can change, and it is possible. It was hard, but it’s not impossible.

Biology: It doesn’t make sense. First, men are simply not made to have sex with men, and women with women. There’s a reason why most people around the world are married to people of the opposite gender. Yes, exceptions are around (like the ancient Greeks and Romans), but they are small compared to the billions of people living together who are straight.

I respect your opinions, but i just don’t buy it. Unless they show me the elusive “gay gene” (which they still havn’t found), it’s just an outcry from 5% of the US pop for equal rights.

*edit*: If we allow homosexuality, why stop there? If a little boy and a 40-year old women really love each other, why stop them from celebrating their love? Or a man and his horse? Or make polygamy legal? If the arabs and Mormons did it for centuries, then why don’t we have the “right”?

Just my two cents.

okay have your protest its your right but invoking Human rights day; is perverting its meaning to end sufferings. I don’t think anyone is harming you; if so let the courts decide.

[50] Posted by: sleeps09 | December 30th, 2008 at 3:17 pm

That day sounds good and everything, but people should already support gay rights. If you don’t then you are discreminating human rights as a whole. People should be allowed to love whoever they want to love. Just because you have the same body parts as the person you love doesn’t mean you shouldn’t be allowed to marry them and have rights. If you are faithful to that person it shouldn’t matter on who you marry. Basiclly not wanting gay rights is just like racism. They are people too and deserve to have rights just like the rest of us.

[51] Posted by: miashell1 | December 31st, 2008 at 12:59 am

Let me be start by saying that I completely and totally believe that gay people are entitled to the same rights as straight people. They are not any less deserving of their rights than anyone else. BUT. Yes, the big but. No one is doing them any favors by participating in “Day Without a Gay.” To gain the respect of the ignorant, one has to enlighten the ingnorant. Behaving immaturely will not educate ignorant people about homosexuality.

wait this could totally backfire-like ppl could think like ‘well they really didnt make such an impact i guess their not tht important’ For it to work EVERY gay person would have to do it

Reading through some of these posts and spotting some of the prejudice that exists makes me realize we still have a long way to go.

I can’t wait until I can tell my grandchildren, “I know this is going to be hard to believe, but long ago some people hated gay people for no real good reason.”

[54] Posted by: Dan3343 | January 2nd, 2009 at 11:33 pm

I am honestly embarrassed by the ignorance displayed by some SparkNotes users on this board. As a free-thinking heterosexual, I am especially disheartened to see such narrow perspectives on a site used primarily by young people! To those individuals who think that it is “laziness” or “unfair” to “get a day off cause you’re gay”, you are completely missing the point. This day is used as a means to draw awareness to the important roles in our society that are filled by people who happen to be homosexual. When people see how vital an entire group of people are to our society through their absence, they may think twice about supporting limiting and old-world views on the rights of homosexuals.

Wow. Strooooong opinions, huh? Well, I’m all for religion and all that. God has saved my ass quite a few times lol. But yeah, leave the judging to him. We shouldn’t decide what is wrong or right when it comes to a person’s personal feelings. Also, if they want to take that commitment to a deeper and more permanent level, then allow them their right to marriage. Hell, us straight people have to suffer through that crap, let them suffer too! I know it says in the bible that marriage should strictly be between a man and a woman, but can anyone honestly say we live in such a simple and religion-enforced time? Who knows. Maybe there were gay people back in the day, and the only reason they didn’t come out is because everyone and their mom was afraid of being killed just for being different. We live in different times, with different views, and a much more open minded world. A lot has changed and has given people the opportunity they needed to let their differences be known and respected.
I say we give gay couples–male and female–their marriage. Let them suffer the horrors of marriage. Let them plan it. Let them enjoy a honeymoon. Let them hate their spouse during their divorce. Let them experience the things they would if they were straight. You may say we’re not denying them that big a right by denying them marriage, but we’re denying them the ultimate symbol of love and devotion, which isn’t ours to withhold. Hey, if a girl wants to get on one knee in front of another girl and ask for her hand in marriage, let her go for it. If a guy decides that he wants to marry and start a family with another guy, then good; let him raise an open minded family. But it’s really messed up to say we aren’t denying them many rights when we’re denying them the epitome of the worldly symbol of love.

[56] Posted by: inu382 | January 4th, 2009 at 2:24 am

Whoa. I totally missed the topic too, lol. But yeah. I know it doesn’t seem like much for them to have a day off, but it’s not about just that. It’s the message behind it. Remember the boycott Martin Luther King Jr. arranged so that African Americans could gain equality? It’s a vague analogy of that. They aren’t skipping because they like it. I’m sure a lot would like to go to work, because hey, we’re in a recession. But they do it for the principle and to support each other. They are gay, and dammit, they want the same rights straight people have. Marriage, dental insurance and the opportunity to commit adultery! Calm down folks, I’m kidding. But in all seriousness, they do this for a cause, not for fun or out of laziness.

I took a Genetics and biotechnology class and they say that after every birth the mother has there is 2/3 of a chance of that child becoming gay and it increases after every birth. It does not necessarily mean they will be gay but there is a chance.

I believe gay rights are perfectly fine. I don’t understand how it would be ok to have rights for different races. Ok you were born african american well some were born gay. I’m straight and I completly agree that gays should have the same rights. And I’m a christian and god loves everyone for who they are you should too

[60] Posted by: paige_porter | January 6th, 2009 at 3:09 pm

What the hell is wrong with this homophobes. Day without a gay is a great idea. I go to church every sunday and gays are allowed because god welcomes everyone. God created people, made us being gay is not a choice, is something you are born with, so why would god make someone gay if he doesn’t like them? As it is in the bible god love EVERYONE! Not only heterosexuals!Thnk thu very much!

Ok- here are some points i’d like to make…

1- Yes, Jesus erased all of our sins, but we must think of it but still beleive in God and then, well… nothing ever happened. (This especially refers to unsterblich88, who said that God doesn’t love them anymore because they’re gay)

2- Not everybody wears mixed threads (to all of you people who mentioned that)

3- In the New Testament there’s a reprise of the rules with some cut out- including the thread thing…

4- I personally beleive that gays are people that deserve rights, but they shouldn’t be married- basically, I agree with ChemFreak243 in the fact that not only God but science says it’s not natural.

[62] Posted by: epiphany_kitty | January 7th, 2009 at 10:33 pm

I’m bisexual, and generally, I’m all for LGBT activism. It’s time for America to stop allowing conservative Christians and bigots to use misconstrued religious text and their own insecurities to deny us of our dignity and our fundamental rights.
While I get the idea behind a “Day Without a Gay,” sending a message that gays are a fundamental and necessary part of our society just like everyone else, it’s totally impractical for that reason. We’re normal people with normal responsibilities. Not all gays are politically aware or active, and most cannot simply stay home for the day and ignore our busy lives.

[63] Posted by: theatricalamity | January 7th, 2009 at 11:23 pm

It seems to me that as “contributing citizens, gay Americans [do] have full and equal rights.”
The notion that all conservative Christians are bigots is simply incorrect. Also, it is difficult to “misconstrue” religious text concerning homosexuality.

[64] Posted by: tmsctt | January 8th, 2009 at 8:56 am

im a bisexual and I dnt think its right the way others judge gays just because of the sexual preference. god is the only person who can judge us. there is nothing wrong with being gay, bisexual, or lesbian, were all human and deserve to pursuit our happiness, regardless of what others think. Its our life not theirs! god loves us all, just the way we are.

[65] Posted by: toxic_gem08 | January 8th, 2009 at 11:34 pm

the question arises: is anything wrong? and how do we know?

[66] Posted by: tmsctt | January 9th, 2009 at 3:45 pm

In all honesty, christianity and many other religions have deemed homosexuality wrong, however, it is not the concern of the people of the world to impose their own beliefs upon others. We are not all christian, catholic, muslim, etc. I am gay, and I must say that it is disgusting seeing the chrisrians and other religious groups provide themselves a reason that they feel they can treat other humans in such disgusting manners. To all that feel that homosexuality is wrong and with that you act foolishly and rudely towards homosexuals I ask you why you feel your hate does anything constructive. I promise you that you will not rid the world of gays, we are here, we arent going to leave, and believe it or not, we are going to have the same rights as heterosexuals. Whether god likes this or not is not my concern. I live for my own happiness and do not care of peoples desires to deny me of my rights. I am going to get married, I am going to have kids, and I am going to live life as a respectable gay person. Approval is not needed, honestly, let it go.

Personaly I am strait, My little (twin) brother is gay, My little(16) sister is Bisexual , and The older sister (20) is a lesbian. They werent born that way, and they hate when gays say that, it is a personal preferance, and if I remember correctly Homosexuals will/ have the chance to go to heaven, and long as they pray for forgivness they will be allowed through the golden gates.

Calling out of work because of being gay is stupid, I mean yeah we have called out to take a personal day, but if I called in work “hey uhm i am tking the day off because I am going shopping”, i would get fired
the same is a homosexual called in and said
“I am not coming into work because i am gay”
you would be fired,

inthis world, economy and monmey crisis, people cant afford to employ people who are talking the day off becuase of thier sexual orentation.

can i call in straight then? lol.

haha
mostly in response to AJO91″
“Respect for the right of another to be wrong does not mean that the wrong is right.”
I will defend to the death your right to believe what you want, but that does not mean that what you believe is the truth.

I would like to restate that not all Christians treat homosexuals in a “disgusting” manner. Tell me where I have been “rude” or “foolish.” Whenever Christians treat anyone like that, they are contradicting biblical principles. When Christian actions are detestable, turn to the Bible and see where they have gone wrong.

The goal of Christianity is not to rid the world of gays.

I can assure you that living for your own happiness will leave you empty in the end. History is full of successful, “happy” people who were none the less empty. I can also tell you this sincerely from my own experience.

I do not hate. I do not hate.

First off i’d like to say that not all gays should take the day off , because theyres one who runs a town . haha . but yes i like this idea. But for those of you who have said that it may lead to gay marrige which is good. I think gay marrige is not. I simply think that marrige is for a man , and a wife. Gay people can have Partners , or be engaged or do somthing eles. I don’t mean to come across as rude . But i’d lie if I said i supported it. And aren’t relashionships about commintment , not tax write offs anyway!. Secondly I do find it a bit strange that men like other men and so on and so forth. Although I support you in it. And I promis to treat you with the same respects. I like the idea ! :D

[77] Posted by: melmelmel23 | January 14th, 2009 at 9:43 am

First off…
To balletprincess17, you sound really christian by saying “christian bullshit” eh? What a filthy hypocrite. He’s not bashing gay people, he is stating his opinion just like you are stating yours.

Back on Topic.

I agree with 11vegeta11, that homosexuals should have equal rights as people, as human beings, but they shouldn’t be allowed to marry. Marriage is a religious institution and has been for the past two millennia, why should we change the definition to appease a minority? I have no problem with civil union because they still get the same rights as married couples do and because I don’t have to change anything I believe in.

As for the Gay day…with this you give gay hating bosses more of a reason to fire you…so, why do it? Also it gives people the impression of Gays thinking that they were superior. “haha, I can get a day off ’cause I’m gay”. I’ve never heard of a Day without a Black day….have you? African Americans have been fighting for equal rights a whole lot longer than homosexuals have, I would think that if this method would be useful (they would of had a hella bigger impact than gays would ever have) they would of had used it.

[78] Posted by: ObalamaLlama09 | January 14th, 2009 at 10:45 am

The “gay-day” was just another example of gays wanting special rights rights just because they choose to be gay. I have heard some claim that gays are a minority, but that is far from the truth as gays are comprised of all races and colors. They wanted to re-define marriage here in California, but thank God it was defeated with the passing of Proposition 8. I have heard gays claim anyone voting against gay marriage is a “bigot” or “homophobic” but that is untrue. I voted for it and against gay marriage because I want to protect marriage for my kids and their kids. Once we re-define marriage, it becomes diluted and open to other definitions. Gay-day, in my opinion was a joke, even some late-night comics made light of it.
What is next?? A Bi-sexual day where they take half a day off? How about a transvestite day where they switch jobs with others?

[79] Posted by: nomad2U | January 14th, 2009 at 1:07 pm

I don’t know about anybody else but the so called “gay day” passed by without any notice. So I guess not to many gays contribute where I live. But anyways I think its a little rediculous to have a gay day. I don’t think gay people deserve there own day. There just a bunch of crazy liberals. What makes them so special! I personally think there is not very much discrimination against gays. I think there is more discrimination against Christians than gays! So lets all make some date Christian day where we all call in Christian. I know a man who is gay and won’t watch our city football team the Seahawks because he doesn’t like Matt Hasselbeck and how he is a Christian and supports Bush. Huh!?!?!?! Is that not discrimination?

[80] Posted by: Kaity92 | January 14th, 2009 at 1:52 pm

its not that im against gays but SERIOUSLY IT JUST DOESNT WORK!!!!! man+women thats the way our bodies were built (its like a freakin puzzle!!) lol but one thing i find pretty interesting is that a long time ago when being wasnt socially acceptable there was only a small percentage that was actually gay and now that it is socially acceptable the percentage has gone up! how the heck do you figure that?? i really thing the people convince themselves their gay and that its not actually a trait…it just doesnt make sense because it is MAN+WOMEN its how we were MADE!!!!

[81] Posted by: Nadinedk13 | January 14th, 2009 at 4:36 pm

They have “Day without a Gay.” Because some people think gays are sick.
So I can understand. Some people should seriously stop being over dramatic. >___>

[82] Posted by: alyssaSAUCE | January 14th, 2009 at 7:36 pm

So I’m gay and a Catholic, which seems to be a bad combination. But I still believe in the Almighty and pray my ass off that I’ll be able to eventually pass through the Golden Gates. However, I hope to do it as a gay human, and thus not ask for forgiveness for being homosexual. I will definately spend some time in purgatory, but so will most of you.

But, suppose there was no God. Perhaps He was something that was made up in order for people to die with hope and faith in their hearts. I wish that this will not be the case, but if it is, then basically this entire conversation means absolutely nothing. If there was no God, then only the laws of men would exist. But who knows.

On the whole Gay Day thing, I do not support nor condone it. If you wish to take the day off, go right ahead. However, I shall not be joining you, as times are tough and I would like to make my money.

[83] Posted by: hidethechildren | January 14th, 2009 at 11:49 pm

Nadindk: there are errors with DNA all the time, people aren’t meant to be born without a finger but that happens, NOT EVERYTHING IS PERFECT and if god made everyone, he made gays, which should legitimize marriage

[84] Posted by: Kmonkey55 | January 15th, 2009 at 12:26 am

I didn’t really notice any change that day. Same normal routine.
And Kmonkey55, techinally God didn’t make gays, he made Adam then Eve. Adam wanted someone to love and cherish, so a female came along named Eve. God made straight people only. So in a sense gays made gays.

-TA-

[85] Posted by: TA2009 | January 15th, 2009 at 1:03 am

Of course it didn’t make a difference. Gay people are less than two percent of our countries entire population. They could all call in sick for an entire week and make very little impact. But, I agree with an earlier comment where is “Day without a strait” why can’t we have “strait pride parades” and, I’m happy to announce the new strait color is………

[86] Posted by: KellyAnne7920 | January 15th, 2009 at 9:05 am

okay. you bunch of queer loving homo’s. all fag’s should be wiped out. i am against gays and all others. gay ppl contibute nothing to the world besides AIDS. thats all theyre good for. so go have buttt sex you little homo’s.

what about white day? what about straight day? these little bastards don’t need there own day! something is wrong with you people!

[88] Posted by: whitesteel69 | January 15th, 2009 at 8:35 pm

As to why we don’t have straiGHt day parades is because are we straiGHt people oppressed? Are we being treated differently from bisexuals and gays? No, we are not.

Whitesteel69….great name?
I’m pretty sure that if gay marriage was allowed then the amount of AIDS would lower considering the fact that it gives a lot of gays the hope of having one partner to “have and to hold” or whatever the saying is and be monogamous. As far as the people saying that God said its wrong….What if, just chance, that God didn’t say anything the bible says. If you say God is so powerful and almighty don’t you think he would be able to make everyone straight and lets say ok “the devil did it”….I thought God was almighty and great he can overcome anything, can’t he? Supposedly he’s not human. He doesn’t have our weaknesses. So where does he come in again….? He said so. Do you personally know for a fact that God himself said, “Being gay is a sin”? No, you don’t. So why are you punishing a group of humans (NOTHING LESS) for being of different orientation based on mere myths, stories, fact-less books? Does it hurt you so much to see gay people? Does it affect your life so greatly that you are not willing to allow 2 HUMANS to marry? The story of Adam and Eve is just that, a story. A fictional fairy tale to easy your minds so that you don’t think about the reality of evolution and other possibilities. Why can’t you retell your stories as Adam and Steve or Adina and Eve? Supposedly God love us all, why are you tell others who God doesn’t love? Its not your choice, your destiny or calling to tell people who God loves and who they can love. Its love.

“[They are gay]. Hath not a [gay] eyes? Hath not a [gay] hands, organs, dimensions, senses, affections, passions; fed with the same food, hurt with the same weapons, subject to the same diseases, healed by the same means, warmed and cooled by the same winter and summer as a [straight] is? If you prick [them] do [they] not bleed? If you tickle [them] do [they] not laugh? If you poison [them] do [they] not die? And if you wrong [them] shall [they] not revenge? If [they] are like you in the rest, we will resemble you in that. If a [gay] wrong a [straight], what is his humility? Revenge. If a [straight] wrong a [gay], what should his sufferance be by [straight] example? Why, revenge. The villainy you teach [them WE] will execute, and it shall go hard but [WE] will better the instruction. ”

Get the pointtttt?

Please do yourself a favor rent, buy, steal whatever the movie Zeitgeist. It’ll teach you a lot about religion and the fable everyone believes.

[90] Posted by: mhustlaaa | January 15th, 2009 at 8:49 pm

Zeitgeist is nothing. It says nothing about Biblical Christianity but merely attacks the superfluous traditions mainly brought about by the Catholic church during the middle ages. Examine the Bible and its credibility and you will find it is far more than a fable.

To hidethechildren: “If there was no God, then only the laws of men would exist.” The laws of men point to the fact that there is a God, if there was no God why would we have laws? With out God our laws are meaningless.

If you want to form your world view on feelings, ok, but feelings are flimsy at best. You may feel as if homosexuality and Christianity are compatible. I suggest the best way to form a world view is through logic. It is inconsistent to claim Christianity and not do Christianity.

Jesus said that if you have faith in him, you will try to be like him. (John 14:12) I should also add that after you have formed your world view on logic, feelings will be satisfied. Christianity IS emotionally satisfying.

[91] Posted by: tmsctt | January 15th, 2009 at 9:34 pm

I agree with mhustlaaa if god is supposedly so powerful, why aren’t all people straight? TA2009: it is actually impossible that the entire human race stemmed from two poeple. Adam and Eve are a MYTH!!! And whoever said something about AIDS, there are FAR more straight people with AIDS than there are gays. I don’t understand why all of you hyper-christians feel like you have to hate someone so much, A HUMAN, just because they have a different sexual orientation.

[92] Posted by: Kmonkey55 | January 15th, 2009 at 11:01 pm

whitesteel: your comments are unwanted, unintelligent, and completely ignorant. You really need to open your eyes and your heart to the reality of life around your sheltered little bubble of a world

[93] Posted by: Kmonkey55 | January 15th, 2009 at 11:03 pm

Just a few words. I didn’t read all these comments since there are quite a few (and I’m supposed to be writing an essay on The Taming of the Shrew which is how I got sucked into spark notes in the first place!) but I do have a few things to say about the ones I have read.

As far as the “God made Adam and Eve, not Adam and Steve” comments are concerned…it’s fair to say that we are all reasonable, thinking humans. And we can all agree that little rhyming games get you nowhere in the real world. So please. If you’re going to be ignorant, at least be clever and original. God also made a maximum of two different races…more than likely just one if you believe in traditional Biblical teachings that woman came from the man’s rib. Yet, today, there are so many different races. God didn’t originally create all of them, according to your Bible, but does that mean he doesn’t approve of them? The logic behind that little rhyme is flawed and silly!

As far as individuals saying that homosexuals are disgusting…that hurts my feelings. Did you know that your words hurt people’s feelings? I’m a person. And those words hurt. I don’t think my behavior is in anyway disgusting, but that’s how you perceive it. It is one thing to think hurtful thoughts about someone, but it is an entirely different thing to vocalize those feelings to the point that you cause other human beings pain. Maybe you just don’t care that you are hurting people. But if you claim to be a Christian and hold these beliefs, than you sure haven’t read your Bible recently. And if you aren’t a Christian and express this opinion so harshly, perhaps you should imagine how it would feel if someone said something like this about your skin colors or your ethnicity.

My point is, black, white, gay, straight, bisexual, tall, short, fat, skinny, old, young. We are all people. If you don’t want to let us get married and have the same human rights as you, can you at least leave us with our dignity? I don’t really think that’s too much to ask for, is it?

[94] Posted by: dani_farris | January 15th, 2009 at 11:21 pm

well put dani_faris and I completely agree that homosexuals should be able to be married. Why should two people who are in love be stopped from sharing that eternal bond? I mean look at all these celebrities who get married one day and file for divorce the next (Britney Spears). Is it too much to ask for two people who are in love to be able to marry?

I am not a gay or anything like that but if I could vote I would vote no for Prop 8. There are many gay people out there who are actually really nice. I heard a story one time that a guy was sent to the hospital and that his gay partner couldn’t see him because he was not family. The guy in the hospital actually ended up dying and think that it is pretty sad taht he didn’t see his partner one last time. You can’t stop people from doing what they’re doing or believing what they’re believing. By voting No on Prop 8 you are not promoting the gays and that everyone should be like that, you are just giving people their natural human rights.

I am so tired of hearing Kmonkey55’s comments. We know what you think on the topic! Just because some people have a different opinion than you doesn’t mean they are ignorant. No more than you or anybody else with a opinion. You trying to get your point across by dissing other people’s opinions just makes you sound childish. How old are you…5?

Oh, I just love the little saying “God made Adam and Eve, not Adam and Steve!” Good argument. Except for the little fact that America is not a theocracy, and therefore not everyone has to follow the “rules” of Christianity that you say exist. You can believe that homosexuality is wrong, but that doesn’t mean that others should have to suffer for your opinions. There is something called separation of Church and State, surely you’ve heard of it? The Bible may say it’s wrong, but if those people don’t follow the Bible, we can’t very well tell them that they can’t do it.

As for the whole idea of Day Without a Gay. Yeah, great way to protest discrimination. It may have made a difference in some areas with a large gay population. As Americans, homosexuals are allowed to protest. However, if you don’t go to work, you may get fired. If you don’t go to school, don’t expect your professor to excuse your absence and let you make up what you missed. I think the people who partcipated in this realized the consequences of participating, and thought that maybe they could make a difference. Good for them. I’m all for the civil disobedience.

Some may think that it doesn’t make a difference, but if it changes even one mind, then I say it does make a difference. I’m sure it did change a few more minds so they may now think more progressively. Bravo. :)

Okay, first of all. In the bible, Old Testament, it states that gays should be put to death. The New Testament is much nicer though, and says they should only be imprisoned.
I have always been religious, so I agree with these statments.

If you remember, God destroyed two cities because of homosexuality. The city of Sodom, and the city of Gamorah. Also where we get the name Sodomy, a sin, of having gay sex.
The facts are already written. Just open your eyes.
Being gay is wrong, and as ‘kaitlinshiner’ so clearly stated. God created Adam and Eve, not Adam and Steve.
Thanks and have a nice day.

I think Day without a Gay is ridiculous. I have nothing against gays and they should be given EQUAL rights…not SPECIAL rights like this entails… reverse discrimination!

“Will God judge me for loving or judge you for hating?” That’s the quote I’ve learned to live my life by. I am a 22 year-old gay male who was raised Catholic. I could no longer justify going to Church because I couldn’t reconcile who I was with what the Church taught. It was a personal choice to leave Catholicism, one I stand by to this very day. I’ve found that the “hate the sin, not the sinner” credo they spout often changes to just “hate” and I cannot abide by that. However, it was, as stated before, my personal choice to leave the faith because I didn’t want to belong to something that I couldn’t agree with. It didn’t hold true with my morals. But if you’ve decided to hold to your faith, more power to you. I find such ardent belief admirable.

Religion is such a beautiful thing. It provides, for some, a greater purpose, a comforting hand in the dark that makes them feel as if things will be alright, that everything happens for a reason, and that there is someone out there, taking care of things and them. Even I, someone who has no particular religious affiliation finds that notion relaxing. Yes, religion is beauitful. However, religion in the hands of more than a few people is a completely different story. Humans, en masse, are idiots. We take wonderful ideas and use them to justify degradation, humiliation, hatred, murder, discrimination, intolerance, and ignorance. Religion, unfortunately, is no exception. It has been taken and maimed, twisted and perverted from it’s original purpose. And mankind is the thing that wrought this crime.

The Bible…oh, The Bible. Now, forgive my ignorance, but if what I remember is correct, The Bible was written by human hand. Now, I understand that it was divinely inspired, that the Hand Of God guided the men who penned it, but that does nothing to change the fact that the ultimate editor of this work was mankind. I know that everyone in this forum has at one time or another let their own prejudices color their opinions. Hell, it’s what opinions are all about. I find it hard to believe that men thousands of years ago were any different. It may have been a heavenly work, but it was written by men who had mortal flaws and failings. So I think it safe to say that God’s message (a good thing) got turned around into something else.

Also, if you look at the times, The Bible acted as social and historical document. Not just a religious one. It provided a group of people a set of laws, rules, and regulations by which to live their lives to ensure surivial.

I know this message isn’t getting out to all of you out there, especially those who have hardened your hearts. So, here’s one for you Fundamentalists reading today. The Bible does have specific condemnations towards homosexuality. There is no arguing that unfortunately. But I would also like to point out that The Bible also has 436 specific condemnations aimed at heterosexuality. Also, for those of you who think that science is saying homosexuality is unnatural, I would kindly like to contradict. There are (and someone mentioned this before) several species, including dogs and cats, that enagage in homosexual behavior all the time. In fact, for a majority of some species, they have homosexual partners. They find the opposite sex only when it comes time to mate, but their young are reared by same-sex partners. Also, why do you use science to back up your opinion when science is constantly trying to prove that God doesn’t exist? More of a point of curiousity on my part, really….

If you hate homosexuals, than you hate homosexuals. Please do us the kind respect of not deceiving us. Do not take religion, an idea created for love, respect, and the betterment of all, and use it to justify your ill-informed, ill-conceived, and unwarranted hatred. And do not lie to yourselves by saying it’s not hatred. If you think what you’re doing is right, than you are blind in the worst possible way. I pity you and I say so with nothing more than sadness in my heart. I hope one day you find the world you’re looking for, one where no one is different, where everyone is the same, and where love is stinted and homogenous. I know I will not be apart of it. I will be somewhere where love is blind, God loves all, and everyone is accepted for who they are.

Now, I’m going to go make dinner for my husband and our son. Suck on that ;)

“Will God judge me for loving or judge you for hating?”

[101] Posted by: zlshay | January 17th, 2009 at 5:03 pm

no. u got it wrong. we don’t hate the sinner, we hate the sin. and God will always judge rightly for loving the wrong and hating the right.

[102] Posted by: s3rv4ntOFgod | January 17th, 2009 at 5:54 pm

In this case, dear friend, the “sin” and “sinner” are the same thing. Being gay is, contrary to most belief, not a choice. So, you cannot hate the deed without hating the person. Again, my sympathy to you and to the closed way with which you view the world.

[103] Posted by: zlshay | January 17th, 2009 at 6:03 pm

Kaity92: I am actually standing up for people! I am personally tired of hearing people diss gays. So before you accuse me of being insulting, maybe you shoudl take a look at some of your comments towards the gay community. I would also appreciate less hypocrisy, I mean, telling me that I am beign insulting by insulting me kind of defeats the purpose.

[107] Posted by: Kmonkey55 | January 17th, 2009 at 7:45 pm

THEY DOOOO! its not mentally or PHYSICALY right!!!!! the gay population has increased because of the media and social effect!!!! more people are gay because theyre like “hm its ok to be gay? THEN IM GOING TO BE GAY!!” man+women. ITS LIKE PUZZLE PIECES PEOPLE!!!!!!!

[108] Posted by: Nadinedk13 | January 18th, 2009 at 2:05 am

Ok KMonkey55, standing up for what you believe in is good but you go way to far. People who have different opinions than you should be able to say what they think and stand up for their beliefs as well. People are just saying how they think being gay is wrong, and in my opinion I think it is very wrong. I am not going to leave comments about how I think people who think differently are in your words “Ignorant Assholes”. Oh…and as for the earlier comment that was so “insulting” to you, I am sorry but sometimes the truth hurts. :(

[109] Posted by: Kaity92 | January 18th, 2009 at 3:26 am

Thats exactly what I think Nadinedk13!!!

[110] Posted by: Kaity92 | January 18th, 2009 at 3:28 am

I’d like to suggest to the number of people on this message board who will recognise themselves in this comment: EDUCATE YOURSELVES! Read up on homosexuality (its nature, social groups, social *as well as* sexual identities that the term ‘gay’ implies, etc etc) before you claim the privilege to judge or pass opinions around.

Ultimately, go on and say a heartfelt prayer for all the innocent people your ill-educated bigotry has destroyed.

[111] Posted by: bobbyalex | January 18th, 2009 at 9:48 am

Why would someone choose to be gay? can someone please answer that. Why would a person want to have to endure that kind of discrimination and hardship? and ignorant does not mean stupid. ignorant means uninformed. How many gay people do u truly KNOW kaity92? Who are you to be judging homosexuals?

[112] Posted by: Kmonkey55 | January 18th, 2009 at 3:55 pm

I am not judging homosexuals. I am only saying that I believe their lifestyle is sinful. I do know a lot of gay people, and we are friends and they know what I think about their lifestyle, and they have no problem that I have a different beliefe than them. As for their discrimination and hardships…they really don’t have anything to complain about! Gay’s do not face anything compared to a lot of the minorities in this country! Gay people pretty much can do what they want, except for in Arkansas where they had the common sense of voting for Prop 8. They don’t have anything to complain about.

Well as a very heterosexual kinda guy, I feel that Hitler was fighting the wrong people. instead of masacering thousands upon thousands of jews, he should have been killing the gays. Homosexual males don’t deserve to be called “males” because one of the very encenses of being male is having a desire for females, not weiners. Eff all homos!

i dont understand why gays are saying they do not have equal rights. A domestic partnership allows for all the same rights as marriage.
enlighten me please????

[115] Posted by: iuuwv | January 18th, 2009 at 7:40 pm

not all states in america allow domestic partnerships thats why. like in minnesota for example. i love my state to death but yeah at least allowing for domestic partner ships would be nice. lol i am not only heterosexual i am also homosexual aka bisexual lol right now i am dating a wonderful man but before this i had a gf who i loved very much. and for all you christians out there. look at the new times and look when the bible was written dont you think things have changed a little bit? even god can change his mind. the way i see it if he didnt want us here living the way WE choose to live he would have gotten rid of us a long time ago .

on another note i disagree with “calling in gay”. there are so many better ways to protest trust me. and not that its kinda irritating because the whole world isnt gunna just stop but with enough effort it will change but i think you would be looking at it the wrong way if you called in gay

[116] Posted by: semansgirl2010 | January 18th, 2009 at 9:45 pm

Okay so some christians are really pushing the whole, God says no or whatever. Well honestly God creates some people to be born with a brain that is “wired” to be attracted to guys, and have a man’s body, how can he punish his creation? The Bible is not outdated, God is all knowing and knew how things were going to turn out. And people have been homosexual forever. Read some greek history, there were many Homosexuals then too. It’s not a new fad. So yeah, Go Gay rights, more power to you, but i want a call in Teenager? Maybe? no?

[117] Posted by: Deller201 | January 19th, 2009 at 1:26 am

And whoever made that hitler comment, shame on you. That’s a horrible thing to say. Like wow that’s bad. What could make you wish something as horrible as the Holocaust on innocent people?!?

[118] Posted by: Deller201 | January 19th, 2009 at 1:29 am

OMG PPL!!!
why don’t we have “day without a straight person” “day without a hispanic” “day without an african american” “day without blah blah blah”

i dont think its fair
no offense…but im not for gay rights
i have gay friends but they know where i stand
and they still love me

i mean…yes im christian…but look at the situation from even a wordly standard
would you allow your children to watch a movie or tv show that shows ppl of the same sex kissing or making love or etc.

probably not….
its unnatural even from a worldly standard…and i dont want the next generation to grow up thinking its ok to be immoral

if gay rights are ok…then shouldnt stealing and lying and cheating and etc be ok?
its all considered wrong…yet America is making it ok
its sad

oh my
i was looking at this and i got one thing to say to alot of you guys who talk about religion , go back in time for a second and remember what you were surrounded in like what your parents were trying to get you into like religion , remember going to church and wearing the crosses because your parents tell you to? you never had a chance to choose your believe , your parents choosed it before you had the chance and most liekly same with his or her parents, its an on going cycle … in fact you didnt even choose your name …
and i believe sinning isnt what it says in the bible , sinning isnt what other people tell you is wrong , i believe sinning is what is in your heart that you know what is wrong for you, and not by any body else , if you go against yourself that is the truest sin of all. and in my heart being gay is not a sin whats so ever.

[120] Posted by: kuuru | January 19th, 2009 at 5:49 pm

What I have an issue with is heterosexual people saying that homosexuals choose to be gay. Have you ever been gay? Have you ever BEEN gay? No, you haven’t. So how would you know if it’s a choice or not? You don’t.

Being gay is no more a choice than being Christian. You are a Christian because you believe in your heart, in your soul, and in your head that it is the RIGHT thing. You believe it beyond any fact, doubt, or argument. It’s the same thing as being gay. I know in my heart that I was born this way, that I was MEANT to be this way. God created me as such and He/She/It meant for me to be gay.

Do us one kind favor and don’t talk about things you have no bearing or right to speak about.

[121] Posted by: zlshay | January 19th, 2009 at 6:28 pm

Well I’m only on sparknotes to study for a Paradise Lost test before I got sucked into this. Ironic right? Big day for religion. Anyway I find it immensely interesting that most of the people who do support gay rights present their arguments in a moderately logically way riddled with entertaining sarcasm and they simply don’t understand how a person could be gay or support them. They don’t openly hate the opposition (at least not in the one’s I read there are like hundreds I don’t have that kind of time). They seem to display patience, one of the seven heavenly virtues if I’m not mistaken. While the other side that claims to be up holding their faith and all that is good are hateful (wrath), jealous that others got a day off (envy and sloth), repeatedly commenting like they are addicted to this message board (gluttony), seem to think that the only reason for being gay is physical attraction (lust)(they should get their minds out of the gutter), feel that certain rights are only theirs (greed) and have a faintly holier-than-thou attitude about their opinions (pride).
Call me crazy but I think that one side is obviously more virtuous than the other. Ever consider that it’s not what you do but how you do it that really counts and gets you into Heaven or Hell (if you believe that).

[122] Posted by: Dreamasif | January 19th, 2009 at 9:16 pm

Well I just have one thing to say. Being gay is not right at all. I don’t want any of you to think that I don’t like gay people, thats not true i just dont like the fact that they are gay. But I let people do what they want and on judgement day they will see that they were wrong to be gay. There are many very nice people in the world that are gay and I feel truley sorry for them because I know what is coming for them in the afterlife. Please people, can you not see what our society is turning into. I believe the rapture is coming and is coming soon.

[123] Posted by: xBrittxMeisterx | January 19th, 2009 at 10:03 pm

Here’s the thing. I read everyone’s comments, (yes I have that much time on my hands) and I think a lot you are just complete idiots. I’m a gay guy and although I don’t take offense to anyone’s comments, i do think a lot of them are stupid. I dont agree wth a day without a Gay, that’s just absurd. Do you people think people choose to be gay! I sure as hell don’t. A lot of gays if not most, would kill to be straight. It’s like I have no choice. Just like you guys dont choose to be straight, you just are. I have tried so many times to get a girl, and although i got some, i hated it! As for the freak talkin about rapture, save it. Judging and bashing others is a sin, so boy do i feel sorry for you. God….. hahah well, I read the bible, yes i do. And to me, its a bunch of stories guys made up cause they needed something to do. Non of you are 100% sure that any of those stories are 100% true. Maybe the people who wrote the bible didn’t really enjoy gay people. And as for us gays going to hell, if God really didnt want us here, we wouldnt be here, and if we are going to hell, those who except it would probably being going to!

[124] Posted by: Dillydal777 | January 19th, 2009 at 10:22 pm

i totally disagree. ppl choose to be gay. oh, and informing someone about what is a sin is not judging, simply informing.

[125] Posted by: Chanel2394 | January 19th, 2009 at 10:27 pm

Well it’s a sin to you because your christian(I’m assuming) but maybe it isn’t to them because they are not so according to you they are going to hell anyway why can’t they enjoy themselves along the way?

[126] Posted by: Dreamasif | January 20th, 2009 at 12:50 am

You might be informing someone as to what a sin is or isn’t, but I’m sure by now anyone who is gay has heard it all too many times already. It’s everywhere, but they still haven’t changed. And they shouldn’t, and won’t. I find it interesting that all of the people against being gay are saying “no offense” and “I don’t hate gay people”. You’re going to offend people with your opinion, don’t try to hide behind it those comments. Just accept that you are homophobic..no use trying to put on the appearance of being a “better” person for not hating a certain group of people. How is it that you can agree with homosexuals getting equal rights, but not see marriage as part of those equal rights??

[127] Posted by: gibson022 | January 20th, 2009 at 2:02 am

First off, I am a Lesbian, so you can see why I have the following views…

Skimming through these comments made me laugh ALOT. Some of these reasons for hating homosexuality are ridiculous. First of all, there is only one place in the bible that CLEARLY STATES homosexuality is wrong. Isn’t this also the section that says men cannot shave their beards, people can sell their daughters into slavery, and that eating pig and shellfish is forbidden? And anyway, the bible is full of bias and flaws, just like a lot of other writings that are written by MAN. Besides, homosexuals may not be Christian, so why should they strictly follow the bible? Butt out, and stop forcing your religion on others. AND, why would God put homosexuals on this Earth if he is just going to sentence them to the fiery pits of hell? It doesn’t make sense to me…

Being gay is NOT a choice. Why in the world would someone choose something that would just give people a reason to tease them and deny them rights? I can’t understand why people think gay people would choose to put up with all of these homophobic bigots that exist in this world.

Also, about the Science thing- that it’s “wrong because they can’t make babies” and it’s not “natural”

First of all- So just because people can’t make babies, that means they shouldn’t be in love? Does that mean old people and infertile couples shouldn’t be together either?

Second- There are A LOT of species that have been recorded having homosexuality. (Whether that means it’s “natural” or not is up to you.) Huzzah for gay penguins!

ANYWAYS. As for the actual article, of course I support gay rights but I don’t think Day w/out a Gay will really help and, If anything, will just be counterproductive. But that’s just my opinion.

[128] Posted by: muffinSurprise | January 20th, 2009 at 2:41 am

This thread is possible more of a epic troll magnet because its more loaded than the religion concept because it challenges the fundamentals of the faiths. People are entitled to their position and that is that.

Faith is just that. Faith, so just pick your superstition and sit back and enjoy your self. For those who like the bible for its moral lessons and literary qualities, i have some more stories for you; you should look at the three little pigs it has a happy ending i am sure you will enjoy that.

there are two lesbians in a ‘partnership’ in my school. they don’t love eachother. they r getting married on a holiday. its for attention. its a new fad. i dont get it. u werent born that way.

if all people were meant to be gay, WE WOULD BECOME INSTINCT.

im not saying that to people of the same sex can’t be in love, it just doesn’t have much logic in it to me… accept for atention

[130] Posted by: chausse | January 20th, 2009 at 4:29 pm

chausse- Of course all people aren’t meant to be gay, just like all people aren’t meant to be short or tall or fat or skinny or black or white or any number of different things. People are meant to be what they are meant to be. Homosexuality is simply a natural variation of sexuality itself. There will always be “straight” people. There will always be “gay” people. There will always be people.

In addition, the attention we receive for it is, at least for me, unwanted. I don’t want to be pointed at, laughed at, cursed at, etc. I want to walk down the mall and have NO ONE stare at me or even notice me.

For the one guy who said that Hitler should have spent his time killing homosexuals, please pick up a history book. Homosexuals were, in addition to the Jews, also on his list to kill. He just chose to focus on one thing at a time, beginning with the Jews. Also, if you are not blue eyes and blonde hair (basically not of German herritage), you, as well as your entire family, would have eventually been killed as well.

Also to the guy who said that Hitler should have spent his time killing homosexuals (I believe “johnnyisapimp” was your screen name), while you’re picking up a history book, you should also pick up a passport as you clearly do not belong in America. Oh, and also pick up a dictionary and learn how to spell massacring.

to all the idiots on this page who are lookin at the matter completly wrong i say this
look being gay in itself is not a sin and its even in tha Catechism of the Catholic Church. The nature of being gay in itself is a…..dnt want to say disorder buh it kinda is because the nature of the human male or female is to love the other sex and reproduce. Now practicing the act of being gay IS a sin according to the catholich church and its teachings. Your not a sinner if your gay but you are one if you practice it, and i know all you guy guys out there are all like WTF how do u expect me to be gay and not be gay at the same time well its possible because i personally have gay friends who dont practice it because of the respect they have towards God for they know that God in his infinite mercy will judge them according to what they truely saw as being moral. Its not thier fault they are gay and its not my fault im not it all has to do with tha nature of the human being and the moral principles of life.

[136] Posted by: Rev_777 | January 21st, 2009 at 1:33 pm

Mmk, first of all most everyone against homosexuality cited the Bible and unless I’m wrong, there’s supposed to be separation of church and state; those are the rules, so if you don’t like them, you can leave (one great thing about America, eh?). If you want to argue that you live in another country then yay, good for you. Now for all of those who don’t care about America and just say the Bible says…then I’ll use that for my argument.
Oooooh the Bible says man/man love is an “abomination”(Leviticus:18:22). I’m gunna ask you a question and I want you to answer it to yourself truthfully (God knows if you’re lying anyway). Have you ever eaten anything from the water that didn’t have scales or fins? That includes shrimp, crab, clam, etc. Do you have the answer in your head? If you do, good, if you don’t, get it. Now I’m gunna share a tid bit of info with ya’ that you should already know if you claim to have read the whole Bible.
“These shall ye eat of all that are in the waters: whatsoever hath fins and scales in the waters, in the seas, and in the rivers, them shall ye eat.
10 And all that have not fins and scales in the seas, and in the rivers, of all that move in the waters, and of any living thing which is in the waters, they shall be an abomination unto you:
11 They shall be even an abomination unto you; ye shall not eat of their flesh, but ye shall have their carcasses in abomination.
12 Whatsoever hath no fins nor scales in the waters, that shall be an abomination unto you.”
That’s Leviticus:11 by the way.
If you answered “yes” to the question above, you’re in the same boat as the gays. Yes, you have partaken in an ABOMINATION!!!!! Same word used to describe both practices, funny huh? Yeah…so if you answered “yes” to my little question, what ever’s happening to the gays is happening to you!
p.s. Matthew 22:39

I would not affiliate myself with such crap! This just shows how prejudice some people are, WERE IN 2009! you would think that we would be more open minded. In my school we actually do something called “Day of Silence” the student body silences themselves for a whole day so we can bring awareness of the silence LGBTQ people go though on a daily basis not being able to speak about their sexual preferences without being judged. Im personally Straight but im not the type of person to be prejudice against another person just because they like another gender, that is none of my business on how another person wants to live their live and love who they want to love.

this is indirectly related to the subject, but oh well
if you are a Christian, there is no way that you believe homosexuality is not a sin
a quote from the good book its self
“If a man practices homosexuality, having sex with another man as with a woman, both men have committed a detestable act. They must both be put to death, for they are guilty of a capital offense.”
Leviticus 20:13
If you are a Christian and you believe every word in the Bible is true, then you also believe that
dont believe it go look for yourself

I would also like to say that homosexuality is obviously not normal, and a perversion
your anus is there for defecating
not shoving a penis in
any normal human could obviously see that

@ who every said the following comment, i lost my place after copying it
“As a Lutheran turned Deist I feel compelled to point out that in order to receive the forgiveness of sins from Jesus Christ’s death and rebirth all you have to do is believe in him. You do not have to truly feel bad about what you did for it states that whosoever believes in him will not perish but have eternal life.”
You really thought believing was all you had to do? Then how do you explain the Devil going to hell? He lived in heaven, and knows with out a shadow of a doubt that Jesus died for people’s sins and that God is real. He was there. The Devil just will not abandon his sinful ways, and accept Christ as a savior.

i understand that many people think its wrong. thats your opinion. i respect it.
i also understand that many of those people feel that way because of their religious beliefs.
I also understand that a number of those people are fine with gay marriage, and a large number arent.

My question is directed at those people who disagree with gay marriage based on religious beliefs. I only ask — Is marriage a RELIGIOUS ceremony between a man and a woman, or is it a pact sanctioned by the government?

A day without a gay????? now i believe this was brought up to make a point to society….you cannot take away human rights, its unfair and un just….what makes the “gays” so much different then the people who are not gay????? There is no difference other than sexual prefrence.!!!!!! People don’t dicriminate against heteorsexuals who have freaky ass fetishes….they are still allowed to have rights…..come on people its way past the 50’s

This is rediculous, If all the poeple who Judge these people are perfect, which is the only way it would be justified to be so judgemental, than the world wouldn’t be as crappy as it is! Face it, there are gays and there are straights and no matter how much hatred and judgement there is thrown in their direction there will still be gays and still be straights. So get over it! ugh.

i think its dumb to make such a big deal out of it. the more attention you seek out the more you get negative attention.
i dont have a problem with gay people. I do however agree that they should not be allowed to get married. its nothing personal its just my beliefs.
i dont think your bad people. i just dont agree with your lifestyle.

Woahhh.
Im straight, so i don’t exactly know about this, but i dont think being gay is a choice.
Do you really think that someone just woke up and said “today is a good day to be gay!” and there they go…No.
THAT, is ridiculous.
Why should their rights be different from ours?
Were all human, we may look and act different on the outside, but were all the same inside…mostly :P
But seriously….do they harm you an anyway? why must we make laws that impose on their rights when they cause you NO HARM?!?!
Why isnt the government doing something better with our money?!?! that is the question to ask!!!

I wasn’t aware there was a day without gay and i’m feel very strongly that homosexuals should not be discriminated against and i think the should be aloud to marry (stupid prop 8 CA)
I don”t think the idea is a bad one but I think that there are better ways to this and no hurt the economy even more

in reply to ryanrandomguy: I would also like to say that homosexuality is obviously not normal, and a perversion

Hey did you know that the male g-spot is in the anus? Did you also know that some heterosexual couples also are known for having anal sex?

anyways
in general (Besides this ryanrandomguy)i think teens these days are alot more accepting of homosexuality than adults. i am a lesbian and i have a girlfriend i love, and no, it wasn’t really a choice. If i was i wouldn’t have chosen it because it makes things a lot more complicated. When my parents found out things got hard because although they are not at all religious, they are very conservative and they just “dont understand why i turned out this way.” But anyways, i think this day is kind of a neat way to show the world that homosexuals are a big part of society. I love the toronto pride parade for this reason. Most of the people who turn up are straight actually, and its a good representation of toronto which is a very diverse and accepting city. the situation in the states is very disapointing. I mean, im not interested in ever getting married anyways, but when the states allows homosexuals to get married they prove that they have accepted that homosexual couples love each other the same way straight couples do and this is ok in society.

Everyone should have the right to marry (and love) who ever they wish to.

hey wtf, could hetero people call in, well, hetero? If not, why should gays be able to? You might think that gays get enough bull and it’s probably true. However, that doesn’t excuse one orientation over another, in any way.

now TECHNICALLY there are women and men who are biologically incapable of having children for some reason (sterility or something like that) so to all ppl saying that being gay is biologically wrong then apparently some straight ppl can be wrong too. so your “fact” is not discriminating gay ppl but discriminating ppl who can’t have children together. i mean im 16 my logic isnt as solid as you older ppl here but REALLY? i dont know…..i think that its a good idea b/c the only way to get equal rights is to do soemthing special. maybe when we can get the same rights as everyone else then days like this will not be nessecery. things like this can merely be a means of temporary advocation (err something) and will not be needed when the primary goal is complete. so shut ur gob whitesteel whoever and other….mean ppl.

oh ya and all the “we need a day w/o a straight ppl” ppl re-read the paragraph above. you dont get a day b/c you dont need soemthing like that…yet (maybe eventually idk). when straight ppl are being discriminated against THEN you can get a day to advocate for your rights. ^ ^

but idk

TO BE GAY, IS TO BE A PERVERT!
IT IS NASTY! IF GOD WANTED MAN TO MARRY MAN OR WOMAN MARRY WOMAN, HE WOULD HAVE MADE IT TO WHERE MAN AND MAN, OR WOMAN AND WOMAN COULD HAVE CHILDREN!

THINK ABOUT IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The only reason homosexuality is become popular is that the state religion in the USA (aka Public Education) teaches it and forces kids to learn about it and admire it.

[155] Posted by: K466 | January 23rd, 2009 at 4:02 pm

For those of you who said that being gay is wrong in the Bible, as well as being biologically wrong…
According to science, humans came to be through the theory of evolution, but according to the Bible, God created human beings.
So what are you choosing? Science or God? Stop being a hypocrite and pick one. They just don’t go together; sorry to disappoint you.
As for Day Without A Gay…I think it’s a good idea. This is America we’re living in, a land of diversity, not some 17th century Puritan village. I’m glad that people are continuing to use civil disobedience to attain their rights. That’s truly the best way to go about it.
For all of you who have something against people due to their sexual orientation, you should be ashamed of yourselves, especially those of you who call yourselves Christians.
Yes, the Bible says being gay isn’t the way God made us, HOWEVER…God loves us all, no matter what we look like, who we love, and where our family comes from. We should follow God’s example and love people for who they are inside, and not judge people for their race, ethnicity, or sexual orientation. If everyone AT LEAST tried keeping their hateful opinions to themselves, this world would be a much better place to live in, of that I am certain.

[156] Posted by: jesswithx1s | January 23rd, 2009 at 7:09 pm

Yes Jesswith God does love us all. but he is also holy. God does hate sin. and when you choose to disobey him you are sinning. don’t use God as a way to get christians to stop standing up for what is right, natural and moral

people what is so bad about being gay? i mean honestly don’t give them a hard time. i know that they can’t reproduce and add to our population. i know that they completely go against moral standard, i also know that they spread disease. so come on. if they are happy not adding to americas population and changing our moral standards and killing people with disease then LET THEM BE HAPPY!!!

[158] Posted by: truth09 | January 24th, 2009 at 1:34 am

Truth09

We are not choosing to disobey God. In fact, some of the most devout Christians I know are homosexual. They, like I, struggled with our differences, but eventually realized that despite the countless nights we prayed to be different, to be changed, we remained the same. God intended for us to be this way. He/She/It loves us as is and if He/She/It didn’t, He/She/It would not have created us this way.

As for your comment about adding to the population, going against the moral standard, and spreading disease, I have this to say.

You’re right. We’re not adding to the population. Oh, except for those homosexuals who engage in artifical insemination and surrogacy. That’s not adding to the population at all. And the reason some of us don’t choose those avenues is because we’ve chosed to adopt the children abandoned by heterosexuals. And we will raise them in a home full of love, care, compassion, and acceptance. I can’t say the same for other parent’s out there.

Moral standards? You’re throwing moral standards at us? You take a small portion of the homosexual population and their activities and judge the entirety of us by them. It would be the same if I took Fred Phelps or Pat Robertson and used those two as a Rosetta Stone to all Christians. But, I, you know, with my atrocious moral standards, have the decency to realize that the actions of a few don’t qualify as the actions of all.

And as for disease, I’ll have you know that the demographic currently being affected most by HIV (I’m assuming this is the disease you’re mentioning) is heterosexual women. Not homosexuals. Do your research before you start spouting off about things which you know nothing about.

[159] Posted by: zlshay | January 24th, 2009 at 2:57 pm

zlshay please don’t take what i’m saying the wrong way. i am a christian and i profoundly disagree with the homosexual life style but that doesn’t mean that i will stop being kind or loving a person who chooses to act like that.

it sounds like you aren’t denying that there is a God. well homosexuality is an abomination to him. it says so in the bible. your last post said that you prayed every night to be changed. i only have one question towards that, what are you praying to be changed to? since i don’t know what you were hoping to be changed to i can’t really say anything. all i can say is that you were prayed to be changed mentally. i think that some people are more prone to choose to be gay just like some people are more prone to become alcholics if they are exposed to it. but the person exposed to “it”(alcohol, gay porn) still has the opportunity to choose not to go to a bar or certain websites.

as far as the moral standards go. all gays have (obviously) homosexual relations. that is what i’m saying is morally wrong. a gay can still think murder is wrong.

as for disease. does it make it ok that mostly women are dying by this horrible disease. no that doesn’t make it right. like i said before your spreading disease. your saying that as long as it doesn’t effect you then your fine. well thats not very loving and caring and i wouldn’t let any kid grow up in house with parents that think that.

[160] Posted by: truth09 | January 24th, 2009 at 7:24 pm

As much as I believe in gay rights, I have to question the point behind this “day without a gay” thing. You say that gay people should have the same rights as straight people, but doesn’t that also mean that straight people have the same rights as gay people? If gay people are allowed to “call in gay,” then straight people should be able to “call in straight.” It’s the only way to achieve equality.
And to those of you quoting the bible: In my opinion, everything the bible says can be interpreted in many different ways. The bible says many things that people today completely disregard. If God is truly a forgiving God, he will forgive people who can’t help their feelings of sexuality.
Now, in certain people’s defense: Some people do wake up one day and decide that they’re gay. I think homosexuality has gone a little too far, the example being bisexual. I think that’s it’s very reasonable to assume that someone who claims they are “bisexual,” is merely curious about dating the same sex, or they really are gay, but want to appear more “normal.” Furthermore, being gay has become somewhat “in fashion.” So many celebrities these days are gay, and now people who wouldn’t otherwise consider themselves gay, are claiming that they are.
Or think about the stereotypical “gay guy.” A man who has that personality may claim to be gay simply to provide an excuse for his personality.

[161] Posted by: Chekka93 | January 24th, 2009 at 10:58 pm

the whole issue of “gay rights” doesn’t make sense. “rights” apply to humans. the issues is whether its accepted or not.

[162] Posted by: truth09 | January 25th, 2009 at 12:06 am

God will forgive people who cannot help their sexuality. Gays won’t go to hell; most of them are as human as anyone else. I think this is a nice idea about how gays are part of society, but others should be able to “call in straight” to achieve equality.

[163] Posted by: jubilee18 | January 25th, 2009 at 12:31 am

I think the whole point is that gay people don’t have as many legal rights as those who are straight. So the whole call-in-straight-thing just sounds ridiculous since it would defeat the purpose. But I’m glad that something’s being done because I honestly believe that it is horrible that they don’t have the rights as we do.

didnt notice a thing.

[165] Posted by: omgwtfbbq47 | January 25th, 2009 at 9:00 pm

Okay, I haven’t read this entire thing but I read a few things saying that being gay is a choice and that’s the sort of thing that pisses me off. How the hell would it be a choice? Do you honestly think someone could ever wake up one morning and say ‘Hey, gay is cool. I think I’ll be gay.” No. That’s not the way it works.
‘Day Without a Gay’ is a movement for gay rights and I don’t think many of you completely understand. Yes, gays are not discriminated in the way that they are unable to have jobs. But they are discriminated enough to not have the right to marry. So, if they are discriminated against at all, what difference does it make the reason? If you’re going to not let them get married, you might as well not have them work. And as I’m sure there are tons of working people who are gay, this movement was meant to show that it may be hard without them.
One more thing, it’s called ‘calling in gay’ because there are too many people in the world that believe that homosexuality is so impure that it could be like a sickness. So if you can call in sick, by the way people are believing, I guess you can call in gay too.

LAST thing, I promise. I saw this on a bumper sticker or something and it demonstrated my beliefs and those of probably many others on this bulliten so I want to post it:
“Not for gay marriage? Then don’t get one and shut the fuck up.”

[166] Posted by: annethebobanne | January 25th, 2009 at 9:23 pm

Do gays reproduce? No, they dont. Its against biological tendencies. If gay was ok, then gay people could reproduce and create other little gays. Its not ok. Its just common sense.

[167] Posted by: adrapeau40 | January 25th, 2009 at 10:14 pm

Keep in mind those of you appalled by the idea of someone taking a day of because they are gay… read the post, they go VOLUNTEER.

and well, as for the argument that gay is not ok because we cant reproduce…
the world could probably do with a little less reproduction.
(along with the other good arguments posted by countless others of course.)

[168] Posted by: chanelp | January 25th, 2009 at 10:42 pm

For the person who said Hitler should have killed homosexuals and not Jews, he did. He killed anyone who wasn’t the way he wanted them to be.

I think there are better ways to be heard than simply calling in sick because of your sexual orientation. Like, my best friend is gay and he participated in a day where, if you’re gay, you simply don’t talk for the entire day. That way, people see what it’s like not to be able to hear your voice. I think that’s a better way than not going. There are fewer consequences, but it still makes an impact.

I hope that someday, heterosexuals and homosexuals all have the same rights. My friend sometimes makes me angry, because he doesn’t like it when he’s called gay, even if it’s not said in an insulting way, and then he blames it on me. If he didn’t want to be called gay, than why does he advertise it. He should be proud of what he is, not try to hide it. I can understand not really liking your personal life like that every where, but he came out of the closet to the entire school and really needs to learn to accept himself. I hope someday he gets that chance.

But that’s just him. I know of other gay people who are totally proud of who they are and are strong enough to brush away the insults in public. I hope someday, they don’t need to brush away the insults. I hope someday the insults don’t exist.

[169] Posted by: dana8 | January 25th, 2009 at 11:12 pm

lets say evolution is true thats would also mean that being gay is not a choice and survival of the fittest is true. then why would humans evolve in to homosexual. that would eventually eliminate the human race. that doesn’t make sense.

second if you are born gay show me how you “different” from the straight people. show me something that is distinctly in your life from straight people from the time you are born until the time you decide to have your fist date with someone of the same sex.

lets say we take two men. and one is gay and the other is straight. and we don’t let the gay man date a guy until he is 20. and we do the same thing to a straight guy. we should be able to see some distinct difference in them if gays are born gay. if there was a difference that would prove that gays are born that way. but there is no difference other then they think differently and are influenced by other things. this means you are not born gay

ryanrandomguy:

i am a devot roman catholic christian and i believe the act of being gay in nits self is not a sin and this is my argument that will lead to show u how u just contradicted urslef:
look being gay in itself is not a sin . The nature of being gay in itself is a…..(dnt want to say disorder buh it kinda is) because the nature of the human male or female is to be attracted to the oppisite sex and reproduce. Now PRACTICING the act of being gay IS a sin according to the catholich church and its teachings. Your not a sinner if your gay but you are one if you practice it, and i know all you guys out there are all like WTF how do u expect me to be gay and not be gay at the same time well to you i have to say this just because you are tempted to steal are u a thief? the same applies with being gay if u are tempted to respond the temptation of bein gay then you are one, but if you withstand that temptation because you know its morally and naturally wrong then you are technically not gay. Now dont take me wrong all you guys who say ur gay just cuzz u like boys and havent practicied it that im encouraging you to do it, im say quite the oppisite. its possible because i personally have gay friends who dont practice it because of the respect they have towards God for they know that God in his infinite mercy will judge them according to what they truely saw as being moral. Its not thier fault they are gay and its not my fault im not, all has to do with tha nature of the human being and the moral principles of life.

so back to what i was saying to ryanrandomguy yeah about your quote:
“If a man practices homosexuality, having sex with another man as with a woman, both men have committed a detestable act. They must both be put to death, for they are guilty of a capital offense.”
Leviticus 20:13
If you are a Christian and you believe every word in the Bible is true, then you also believe that
dont believe it go look for yourself”

i think you should take another look at what u wrote cuzz its right in your face: “IF A MAN PRACTICES HOMOSEXUALITY I HIGHLY EMPHASIZE ON PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE HOMOSEXUALITY….”
UMMMM I think i got ma piont across

p.s. another thing not evry word in the bible is true u say ur a christian buh by saying evry word in the bible is true your adopting the Jahova mentally at lookin at the bible
the bible is to be taken mainly figuretivally. Yes there are chapters and quotes that are 100% historically true such as the exsistence of jesus and other main characters but that another topic i dnt feel like getting into at this piont

my main reason for this whole argument was this

i am a christian and i believe that the nature of being gay in itself prior to the mantallity of the person is not a sin!!!!

[171] Posted by: Rev_777 | January 26th, 2009 at 1:40 pm

Gay’s are SINNERS! EVERYTHING IN THE BIBLE IS TRUE! How are you going to say that theres certain things in the bible that are true and things that arent? the bible is 110% true. and you cant prove that its not. i believe in jeses, and if others do too, then they will realize that ALL GAYS ARE SINNERS AND HOMOSEXUALITY IS A SIN IN ITS ENTIRITY!!!!!

[172] Posted by: PearldrummerMMX | January 26th, 2009 at 5:05 pm

Wait, What? Does anyone really still think like that anymore? I’m really aggravated by you Biblicalistic narrow-minded fanatics. I, personally, don’t believe in god, but I don’t close myself to the possibility that there is a cosmic force, or that, by some slim chance, you are Jesus, come again to correct our sins. Unlikely as that is, it is possible.

[173] Posted by: thatsDR_AvgJoe | January 26th, 2009 at 5:15 pm

Well, annethebobanne, the point that I was trying to make is that SOME people DO wake up one morning and decide to be gay because it’s “cool.”
I’m not saying that’s what it’s like for “real” (for lack of a better word) homosexuals, but it’s getting to be so that people are deciding willy-nilly that they’re gay, without really thinking it over.

[174] Posted by: Chekka93 | January 26th, 2009 at 6:05 pm

I think Katy Perry’s song “I kissed a girl” didn’t help with the willy nilly pick to be gay thing. Being gay is not a choice one can make at some point during their life. To all of you homophobes out there, at what age did you decide to be straight?

[175] Posted by: BrainDead106 | January 26th, 2009 at 8:58 pm

haha that song….its so good to dance to tho!!! but i like what some people are saying here. i said earlier on that people choose to be gay because its unnatural and it just doesnt make sense cause the “pieces” dont go together. and everyone was like why would they choose to be gay blah blah. well they choose to be gay cause they want to be rebellious or some stupid reason like that…peoapl feel attraction to whoever they want, boys or girls. so pick the right one!! the opposite one!!! or else your going to be doing some pretty gross things with the same sex partner…EW!

[176] Posted by: Nadinedk13 | January 26th, 2009 at 9:56 pm

I’m christian, so most of you know were I stand on this issue already.
I think being gay is a choice, one makes it for certain personal reasons. i’m not gay so I don’t know what those reasons might be. I believe that being gay is a sin. I’m not a homophobe either. Just because I think that they are damning themselves doesn’t mean I want them to be damned. The bible says ‘love you neighor as yourself’ not ‘love you neighor as yourself unless he’s gay’. we are all sinners and to God sees us all in the same light. so i’m going to love homosexuals. not in a romantic way, but in the way abrother loves a brother, or a friend loves a friend. I’ll hang out with them, be friends with them, witness to them. Even Jesus hung out with sinners and prostitutes! the bible says that all other virtues are unimportant compared to love.

[177] Posted by: jw5732 | January 26th, 2009 at 10:52 pm

rev_777

Leviticus 20:13

“If a man also lie with mankind, as he lieth with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination: they shall surely be put to death; their blood shall be upon them.”

against to the reason of God, all the reason of every wise man cannot stand

[178] Posted by: jw5732 | January 26th, 2009 at 10:59 pm

It seems highly unlikely that anyone would really chose to be gay. Why would anyone want to face the discrimination that homosexuals have to face. Did we ever choose to be heterosexual? NO so how is it any different for homosexuals? ask any gay person and you will find out that NO ONE CHOOSES TO BE HOMOSEXUAL!

[179] Posted by: Kmonkey55 | January 26th, 2009 at 11:10 pm

Also for all of you bible thumpers…the bible says that anything other than missionary position is sodomy. I don’t know about you but I think that’s a bit over the top. I think I would rather enjoy my sex life. THe bible is not literal. It is not all truth.

[180] Posted by: Kmonkey55 | January 26th, 2009 at 11:13 pm

the bible is completly true and you are ignorant for saying otherwise.

gays are people as well but i believe it is wrong and sinnfull, but that does not mean i hate gays, in fact one of my best friends is gay and i made the choice to still be his friend even though i bleive his choices are wrong, and i pray for him often.

as to marriage i feel that equal rights should be observed, with the way things are today and all.

so thats it for me

what you quoted is completly right
yes if ur gay and u sleep wif a man it is a sin homosexuality is a sin being gay is a sin but what im trying to say is this someone who saidss their gay and hasent acted upon it is not a sinner why? because look take a ordanary man okay he satrts realizin that he likes otehr man and he is TEMPTED to do “stuff” with them okay now take an another ordinary man and he sees somin he likes and doesnt have the money for it and is TEMPTED to steal now just cuzz he was tempted to steal does that make him a thief so can we judge him and conclued that he is a thief NO and will GOD judge him as a thief NO why cuzz he didnt practice the act now same thing about homosexuality just cuzz someone wants to sleep with a man but doesnt choose to do so because he knows it goes against the nature of the human being are we to judge him as a practicing homosexual NO and will GOD no……… now if ur thinking im trying to defend the gay ppl u r completly wrong cuzz evry practicing gay out there im srry to say is goin to hell…….what im trying to do is change the mantallity of tha way you think towards gay ppl to fully understand where and how they come so dnt judge them to unjustly

PearldrummerMMX

now about the bible being taken figuretivally yes i will as you said PearldrummerMMX say the bible is not 110% true DO WE KNOW IF THA FIRST MAN AND WOMEN WAS NAMED ADAM AND EVE NOOOOO DO WE KNOW WHICH ANIMALS WERE ON NOAH’S ARC NOOOOOO DO WE KNOW HOW OLD THE VIRGIN MARY WAS NOOOOO All WE CAN DO IS ASSUME AND TRUST IN WHAT TRADITION TELLS US BUT IS IT 110% TRUE MAYBE MAYBE NOT JUST AS MUCH AS THE POSSIBILITY OF IT BEING TRUE TEHRE IS The SAME POSSIBILITY OF IT BEING WRONG
now dnt jump to conclusion and say im sayin the bible isnt true it is very much true BUT IF UR A JAHOVA WITNESS UR THE ONLY ONE WHO HAS THE RIGHT TO SAY THAT EVRY WORD IN THE BIBLE IS TRUE!!!! CUZZ THERE THE ONLY RETARDED PPL IN THE WORLD WHO TAKE EVRYTHIN SERIOUSLY , eg. IN THE GOSPEL OF MATTHEW IT SAIDS THAT JESUS WAS SITTING IN A CIRCLE WITH HIS DISCIPLES AND A WOMEN CAME IN AND SAID THAT HIS BROTHERS AND SISTERS ARE OUTSIDE WAITING FOR HIM………….NOW THE JAHOVAS READ THIS AND IN THIER MENTALLITY EVRY WORD IN THE BIBLE IS TRUE SO THEREFORE JESUS HAD BROTHERS AND BY ACCEPTIN THIS they R NEGLECTIN THE VIRGINITY OF THE BLESSED MOTHER OF GOD WHICH I FIND TO BE COMPLETY CRAZZI………….now if ur gonna come at me and say that evry littile word in the bible is 110% i think u should pick up a bible sometime read it and go to Kingdom Hall wif the rest of the Jahova Witness’ and get baptized cuzz thats exacctly where ur headin towards.

I have some things to say, one if you don’t want gay marriage, then don’t get one
two, rev_77 if you want to prove a point well I suggest you invest in some sort of grammar text book or spell check, three for everyone that says on here the reason gay marriage should not be allowed because the bible says “a man should not lie with a man”, the bible also says we shouldn’t eat shell-fish, stone wives and children, and sacrifices lambs. So if you do all those things, then feel free to tell people that they should not have a gay marriage. To quote Jesus, “How can you complain about dust in someone else eye, when there is a two-by-four in yours?”
For reference, I am a heterosexual, and I currently attend a catholic school.

[183] Posted by: JEgler | January 27th, 2009 at 5:33 pm

you think that men had penis for a reason? to put it in a hole, a vagina, if you think of it that way if you are christian or not there is something different about being gay than straight. it is against human nature…..so if you can agree upon that then your opinion on the matter is obviouse

ur a heterosexual and u currently go to a catholic school hmmmm your piont is?!?! i use to be bisexual and im now not only attendin a catholic school but im currently in a seminary

and by the way about ma grammar and spell check well this is tha best way i can write in english cuzz i was born in puerto rico and spanish is ma first language and when i came to new york i was automatically exposed to the instant messegin way of writing not sayin i cant write a gramatically correct essay that when u read it you think it the best essay youve eva wriiten im just sayin its faster and easier for me to write and explain it like this

i disagree with this
if heterosexuals were to declare a straight day they would be highlyu prosicuted
but if gays do it its standing up for their rights
i am bisexual and support gay rights completely
but this is not the way to do it
it is better than violence but,
i don’t think this is the way to do it

I’m straight and I think if they really want to they can have “A Day Without Gay” but I also think it’s sorta dumb. Like half the people who have posted I’m gonna have to ask the same question: What would happen if there was “A Day Without Straights?” It’s pointless. And also I don’t support homosexuality but that isn’t part of my reasoning. I am NOT a homophobe I just don’t agree. I don’t believe that gays are born gay I think it’s a life choice. I could be wrong and I don’t know the truth will be revealed in the end. By the way I also would like to put out there that I think it’s weird seeing gay couples doing the whold PDA thing, but be true to yourself and look for reason. Be Happy!

Just throwing that out to the crowd

this topic is purely amazing, shall I start with the main idea? pshh, kids, i shall
so, i know everyone reading this had read the actual passage, so let me just allow you to realize, if you haven’t, that there are no such thing as gay rights.
haha, did you know what? well, good if you did, and now you do if you didn’t.

anyway, onto more interesting facts. i believe an earlier comment someone stated, “why avoid working if you’re looking for social equality rather than financial equality?” and it seriously tickled my belly to read this, because i hadn’t thought of that before. whether you like it or not, the person that said this is exactly right. I’m all for a day of silence for ‘gays’, and what have you, but taking a day off of school/work in this WORLDWIDE time of utter economical despair isn’t the way of going about homosexual equality.

otherwise, i do appreciate any movement for the benefit of people who actually deserve it, and that’s exactly what ‘a day without gays’ is, so in that sense; i respect it.

as a ‘child’, I very much appreciate the honest opinions of others, even if i do find them utterly heinous, (and by this I’m referring to those who discriminate based on sexuality, etc.) because knowledge about current events, past events, justice, pop culture, & what have you is basically the water that populates 70% or so of my body.

so thanks for contributing to this well of it, and sorry if this was too long of a read!
xD

for all the people out there who keep saying the bible says this, the bible says that….in my opinion its bull…. all people should be treated equal whether straight, bisexual, or homosexual!!!!! gay people are just like us….they deserve all the rights straight people have…why can’t they marry who they love, or adopt kids……..its not hurting anyone, but it is hurting them if we keep them from who they love. i love Day Without A Gay!!!!!!

[192] Posted by: Aulani94 | January 29th, 2009 at 11:20 pm

Hello fellow citizens,

I don’t want to start out with “I believe in God so the bible says this or that” this is a definite turn off to any one, even me. Now I tolerate homosexuals for i don’t have any issues with anyone i know is gay, and i know a few. But I do believe in God and that Jesus Christ is my Savior, so i do believe that homosexuality is against the nature that God created for our relationships, sexual as well as emotional, to be intended between Man and Woman.

Now i am taking a world view class and this topic has come up. Homosexuality has had studies confirming that its natural or that its healthy and good, but these are false. Well homosexuality is not natural, nothing in the brain confirms that homosexuality has a mental part. The gay gene has not been proven to be correct and it sounds illogical sense if you were a homosexual you could not pass it on since you would have sex with the same sex. Homosexuality is not healthy and good, one) homosexuals have multiple partners throughout their lives, some going over 200 partners, most they just met and had a one night stand. This gives the big risk of having STD and ultimately killing you because of having homosexual sex. Two) this isnt good for any emotional growth since you would have multiple partners.

That was just scientific results. Now I am bothered that homosexual rights activists write books for children as young as 4-5 explaining in child like terms that homosexuality is right. This is ultimately wrong both in religion and scientific because, as i stated above, homosexuality does not bring a healthy life.

Now I understand that homosexuals want to be tolerated, and i agree, but not to the extent to where they enforce it in schools saying its right or making special laws for homosexuals of marriage. Personally I would perfer that it would be a Civil Union and not a Marriage b/c Marriage is between a Man and a Woman. Please comment on this if i havent made things clear or seem jumpy on issues.

the user bcbnews states:
“Homosexuality is not healthy and good, one) homosexuals have multiple partners throughout their lives, some going over 200 partners, most they just met and had a one night stand. 1) just because your gay doesn’t mean you have sex with large numbers of partners
2) there are many straight people (many of whom I know) who have large numbers of sexual partners

the rest of what this person said is opinion. I may not agree with all of what people have said but let’s get the facts straight.

also the real question here is kind of like the one for abortion. Abortion’s question is when does life start, at conception or at birth? The gay rights idea presents us with a couple of similarly controversial completely opinion based questions. Are you born gay or is it chosen? (nature v.s nurture) and Should we believe in biblical teachings? the last question is the one that is the most controversial. It depends on your religion and whether you take the bible literally or not.

My personal opinion (which i will share although it is really irrelevant) I am a conservative Jew. I believe is the bible is one large book of morals. It is loosely based on fact. I don’t take it literally. For instance, I don’t believe the world was created in seven days. I believe in evolution. I am also not even sure I believe the bible was written by G-d and given to moses. I am still grappling with that question and will be all my life. But I understand the comfort of religion and tradition. The feeling of being in my temple surrounded my community and traditions is a wonderful feeling.

so what does this have to do with Gay rights? I understand why some people think its wrong and it is G-d mandated so. But because I take the bible as a good story, not all the truth, I believe a break with tradition, as nice as it is can be good. If judaism did not evolve over time it never could have survived. If judaism did not evolve over time I would not have been able to read torah as a woman. So I think, at least as a jew, it is time to take a step toward the future. It is time to break with tradition and give all people their rights. Let us let gays be married in our temples. Let them send their children to our hebrew schools. G-d isn’t only what is written in some book, G-d, in my humble mind, is the goodness in everyone. Some Gay people are good people. Some are bad people. But they are all people.

And as for science being against gays. There are gay animals. Can turtles and penguins wake up and think, I will be gay today? I think not. other organisms live only by their gut, not by their reason. Are those animals evil? One could say that because we can reason we are above these animals and should know better and I honestly have no rebutle for that if that is your opinion. I am hoping another person who rights after me will.

so what ever you think. Who ever you are. Gay, Straight, Bi, White, Asian, African, we are in the end all the same. If you believe in G-d, G-d bless you! If you do not, I send you my best wishes!

[194] Posted by: 441is | January 30th, 2009 at 6:52 pm

EXCUSE ME!
I am sorry everyone has an opinion. Here is what I think.
UNLESS YOU ARE GAY YOURSELF, SHUT THE HELL UP! YOU HAVE NO SAY IN HOW ANYONE LIVES HIS/HER LIFE. IT IS NOT YOUR BUSINESS AT ALL!! I am bisexual, am I hurting you? Will you please tell me to go die because I do what I WANT?! IF I OFFEND YOU, DONT PAY ATTENTION TO ME! I am not wrong, and neither is any other homosexual. We are happy. Are you jealous?

[195] Posted by: think_thenspeak | January 30th, 2009 at 9:45 pm

441is,

Thank you for responding. Well i have some questions actually, Do you believe in God? (i was confused if you were against him or not) If so do you believe that God is personal? Also, if you believe in God but think that the bible is a moral story and holds little truth (which the Torah is the first 5 books of the old testament i believe) then why believe in God? I believe that the bible is the word of God, sure it was physically written by man but it was inspired by God. To believe God is truth and righteous you have to accept that the whole bible is truth. I also believe that the universe was created in 7 days, maybe not what we call 7 days exactly but when the earth was finished it did have a timed day and night. The reason is because God is a personal God, involved with our everyday lives. Without having a personal God we could use the evolution theory, but if we are to believe that he is personal then evolution is impossible. For God made everything personally, every shade, color, plant, tree, star, planet, and human.
Sorry for rambling. Now when adam was created and after some time of naming animals and everything, adam felt lonely. Now did God create another man to fulfill his love life with? No!, He gave him a woman specifically to fulfill that role of relationship and companionship, emotionally and sexually. After words God gave clear indications that man and woman are meant to be together. Now i have never seen a gay animal, on its own accord and in its natural habitat. I am sure you can train or force animals to be gay but, like u said in their gut, they know that mating with the opposite sex reproduces their kind.

I just saw a movie “Children of Men” and i highly recommend it to anyone, its about the world in 2027 and their was a random epidemic 18 years before where no woman was becoming pregnant. And in 2027 there was war and chaos everywhere, and in the midst of it all a baby was born and it showed the importance of the life of a baby.

think_thenspeak: If i have said anything to offend you i am sorry, but i think being homosexual is wrong. and no i am not jealous.

This site gives biblical evidence that god loves gays too. It takes all controversial passages and provides detailed, quoted explainations directly from the bible.

http://members.cox.net/paulmcc/mcc/samegen.html

Here are a couple of passages:

Contrary to what many people have been taught there is nothing in the Bible which condemns people with a homosexual orientation having same gender relationships. In fact, did you know the word “homosexual” does not occur in the Bible at all in the original languages it was written in? This publication is called “Same Gender Sexual Behavior and the Scriptures” because the scriptural texts considered only deal with sexual behavior not with homosexual sexuality as a whole or homosexual orientation.

You are a part of the New Covenant! The New Covenant is one of grace (which means unearned love) in Jesus Christ. It is not concerned with gender roles or sexual orientation for in Christ there is “neither male nor female”. (Gal. 3:28) The New Covenant accepts even those who had formerly not been acceptable because of their sexual or reproductive status. You do not have to bear children in order to be included in God’s family! (Isaiah 56:1-5, Matthew 19:12) The Old Covenant was very concerned about such things. Deuteronomy 23:1 would not allow castrated men to be a part of the Old Covenant yet in Acts 8 we are shown that the New Covenant sets that prohibition aside.

I am a homosexual female, and I find this idea ridiculous. Missing a day of work needlessly will not solve anything but will instead bring about more outright insults about the ‘frivolity’ of the homosexual community.

As an added piece of irony, I quite enjoy the improper grammar and heinous spelling of the rude multitude who are offended by the very presence of homosexuals. Congratulations on once again proving yourselves.

Also,

“i say let them have there way than mabe thay will all die from aids

May I point out the unabashedly vapid nature of this comment and place it upon a pedestal as a perfect example of the utter stupidity of the closed-minded simpletons of the internet?

[200] Posted by: k1ngm1ngz | January 31st, 2009 at 11:19 pm

Jessrules151: I think if you look at the whole passage of Gal 3:28 it will explain something totally different, here is the whole passage you are talking about “You are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus, for all of you who were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ. There is neither Jew nor Greek, slave nor free, male nor female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus. I you belong to Christ, then you are Abraham’s seed, and heirs according to the promise.” (Gal 3:26-29) This has nothing to do with being homosexual or not this is dealing with the fact that all gender, race, and status belongs to Jesus Christ.

I have never seen a passage where God says that being homosexual is good in my book. If you can show me the PASSAGE, not verse, where it explains that God accepts homosexuals, i will confess for ever saying that homosexuality was wrong. But i think Genesis chapters 1-3 explain God’s intent for Man and Woman’s role for each other.

[201] Posted by: bcbwnews | February 1st, 2009 at 12:04 am

Furthermore Romans 1: 18-32 quite clearly states that God shows wrath to those that have sexual impurities and homosexual life styles “In the same way the men also abandoned natural relations with women and were inflamed with lust for on another. Men committed indecent acts with other men, and received in themselves the due penalty for their perversion.” (Rom. 1:27). Please read the whole passage.

[202] Posted by: bcbwnews | February 1st, 2009 at 12:23 am

Another thing Jessrules151, Your “passages” doesn’t support homosexuality at all, eunuchs arent homosexuals. Eunuchs are men who have been castrated, usually at birth, to perform certain tasks in their society. So i don’t know who you are getting this supposed info that homosexuality isnt in the bible and that its ok to be homosexual in God’s eyes.

[204] Posted by: bcbwnews | February 1st, 2009 at 1:49 pm

But dealing with the article, “Day without a Gay” would be just like if everyone has red hair leave work and parade around because your special. Seriously, if homosexuals want to be accepted as normal then don’t have parades making you special. “But its to gain attention to our cause” no its making it worse matter of fact, if you want someone to accept you as you are don’t act special. As well as our economy isnt as great right now so even though the whole gay community isnt big it could still hurt businesses.

[205] Posted by: bcbwnews | February 1st, 2009 at 4:56 pm

To Mebbs314, the cafeteria Roman Catholic, and anobody else who has the guts to face the truth. You’re not even that. You are nothing.

If you just open your Bible to where! and read about Lot, what do you see? This is the only tine God destroyed a whole entire city. Why? because of homosexuality!! It is amazing how many comment on this subject but are so iggnorant and unaware of many things.

1- what God says,
2- what it means
3- denial of God
4- denial of His word as perfect and infallible
5- ignorant of unaware of the FACTS that information given by homosexual organizations, partners cheat on each other more than married couples (per capita-meaning if the homosexuals are 1/10 of the nonhomosexual couples then they cheat more than 10 times the non),
6- they protest for more rights than non,
7- they actually now have more legal laws protecting them,
8- there is more violence in a homosexual relationship,
9- their children are more likely to become involved in drugs, alcohol, dropping out of school, and crime,
10- their organizations (not all) are more violent than non (they have been known to be given the courtesy of speaking first at organized gatherings we will call debates, and then shout down their opponents even to the point of using loudspeakers and bullhorns,
11- when going to their cars later the opponants have been chased, even women, and attacked
12- this violence came to my attention around 1983 when a pastor fired his organist from the church because it is a Bible believing church, and when they found out, from him, that he was a practicing homosexual, he was dismissed
13- for months the pastor received threatening calls at nights against himself, his wife, his two little children, acts of homosexual perversion they would perform against the two LITTLE INNOCENT CHILDREN and then a orgy ending to their lives to the point that
14- THEY BURNED DOWN THE HOUSE ONE NIGHT AND THE FOUR OF THEM BARELY ESCAPED WITH THEIR LIVES.

I believe everybody has the right to live their lives to their happiness, as long as it does not encroach upon others. But when Westchester County, the largest county in New York tells me they are going to take 50 cents of my tax money every month and use it to run an organization that monitors the safety and legal rights of gays, you know where you can all go.

Gays make more on average than non gays in the middle class. I think that it is disgusting that people in this country let it get this bad including the scum politicians that stole my money when they could have enacted laws through Congress (you do remember them don’t you? The same ones that could have put all these thieves away from the financial sector and three Pres. cand’s said not one word about it when runing for Pres.) and that people should have to have special laws to protect them.

This is why America and Americans are stupid. They do not know American history. The government was created by the people and for the people. I don’t remember what piece of paper it was written on over 200 years ago but it wasn’t toilet paper.

I really learned to hate this country after 9/11, too!!!!! It became the blame game. Not what went wrong at the towers (where I used to work), how do we work together to make sure it does not happen again, what was wrong with the communication system, lets get a good one in there; God forbid it happens again. And we will have a bigger tragedy happen with the next five years that will claim thousands of lives.

Enron should have taught the SCE and everybody something. Did you see everyone leave work, protest, tie up traffic, tie up government, tie up the switchboards at city hall, the state capitol and the white house? All you saw were idiots protest for ILLEGAL ALIENS to become legal citizens. All you saw was people protect less that 1% of the voting population because they are gay. Nothing to stop this crisis the most sinnful generation of Americans in the history of the USA create that brought down the world’s economies.

Then you read some dick like Henry Paulson; do you know who he is? say that China is to blame.

My Gos when are the citizens of this God forsaken country going to get their heads out of their a** and wake up? Then I also have to hear a big mouth women who sounds like Kim Commando on the radio Sat, talk about Obama and propaganda spreaders like Rush and Sean who know bnothing about Economics talk their crap like Reagan, the idiot Pres. who deregulated everyting and gave the banks a field day to start this thievery and decit.

The country will NEVER experience the type of life we had 10 years ago. You have been watching it go dowmhill for 20 years or so. You let it happen so stop listening to crap about the USA always comes back because this time it is more serious and widespeard (an understatement) and it will get worse. Mark it on your calendar. It will get worse.

The USA will be brought down one day, within 10 years, probably by information warfare. In 25 years or less we will be in the top 11-16 spots and we will be very close, if not, a third world country due to lack of jobs, outsourcing, no manufacturing lacking, more foreigh countries owning companies, real estate, and for awhile I have been reading, the very long-term leasing of major highways and bridges and ports to foreign countries.

Stop reading the NY POst and the Daily News and read the Times (not much better anymore), the Journal, Forbes, Barrons (they give no face to anybody), Newsweek, and anything that has the most factual information. Then learn to think, reason and analyze. As it is most CEO’s are stupid and incompentant from J P Morgan to Citigroup, Microsoft, Qwest, Discover, AT&T, Verison, Amazon, eBay, etc. They just started good companies, people went for it, then they started to rip off people and force you to play by their rules.

i am fully aware that the issues uninvolving gay rights will never be totally resolved, but i do have some comments to make on the issue. the first couple are just to clarify where i stand on the issue.
1. i believe that being gay is a sin
2. i believe that it is not my place to judge people, but i do have a responsibility to love people
3. when it comes down to it, marriage is a religious institution. today’s society has made it into a purely legal issue, especially when it comes to gay rights. however, like i said before, its basis is religious. therefore it is an issue in which church and state cannot be separated. that means that when lawmakers are deciding whether or not to make gay marriage legal, them MUST look at the religious perspective and the religious perspective says that homosexuality is wrong. plain and simple.

im sorry if ive offended anyone but this is my opinion and i am entitled to it, just as you are to yours…

Because they are drawing so much attention to themselves, they are discriminating themselves from society.
They are making themselves so incredibly different when in fact they are just like any other person. This is too much. They are humans. They need to stop acting like they are discriminated against and start acting like respectable members of society.

I cant understand why people are so upset about gay marriage.
Your allowed to marry who you want to, why cant they?
Love is love, it doesnt matter whom they are marrying.

bcbwnews: What you were saying about the context of the “neither male nor female” only strengthens my argument. The point is God is not judging. He loves us unconditionally and he created homosexuals, like all people in His image. (Gen. 1:27) There is NOTHING that can separate you from the love of God. (Romans 8:39) WHOSOEVER believes has eternal life. (John 3:16, 6:51, Romans 1:16-17, 10:13) These, which are in the correct context, prove how tolerent God really is. There should not have to be a blinking sign that says homosexuals don’t go to hell, because the central message of the Bible is love. Would you expect God to directly say that you will not be punished for lusting for the opposite sex? If you love God, believe in him, and follow his commandments, you will go to heaven. In response to comment 202:

ROMANS 1: 24-27 - Self-righteousness

The central message of Romans chapters 1-3 is often lost because some readers fixate on the verses referring in part to sexual activity in 1:24-27. The central message of Romans chapters 1-3 is often lost because some readers fixate on the verses referring in part to sexual activity in 1:24-27. In the first three chapters of Romans Paul is protesting against self-righteous pride. To illustrate his point he uses as an example the way Christian-Jews acted self-righteous toward the Gentile people.

Paul begins by describing the idolatrous practices of the Gentiles. He was not describing homosexuals in Romans 1. He was talking about Gentiles as a whole. The Gentiles worship idols with sexual practices some of which were apparently same gender. The Gentile mind was filled with “envy, murder, strife…” etc. Then Paul turns the tables upon the Christian-Jewish reader and states that all are in need of the unearned love of God (grace), Gentiles, and Jews alike. One can speculate that the Christian-Jewish reader must have responded with great indignation - for they were “clean” while the Gentiles were “unclean.” Yet Paul seems to be saying that their minds are just as full of “envy, murder, and strife…”as the Gentile mind. “ You have no excuse… whoever you are, when you judge another, for in passing judgment… you condemn yourself, because you, the judge, do the very same things.” (Romans 2:1)

The situation is ironic today because these same “unclean” Gentiles now largely comprise the majority of Christian churches. Some of these Gentile-Christians who were only admitted into the Christian church through unearned grace now would deny that same grace to others. Yet Paul still proclaims the Gospel is for everyone (Romans 1:15).

“All have sinned” and are “justified (made right with God) FREELY by God’s grace (unearned love) through the redemption that is in Jesus Christ.” (Romans 3:23-24)

Yes, Paul had difficulty with same gender sexual behavior but can one simply disregard the cultural context in which he was writing? Is context important in understanding Paul’s writing and how it is applied today? In this brochure there is a section on “women” in which several verses are cited which are used by some churches to subjugate women while other churches disregard them. For example read the following passage: “it is shameful for a woman to speak in church…the things which I write to you are the commandments of the Lord.” (I Cor. 14:35, 37) Some interpret this as God barring women from preaching, others say Paul was writing about a specific incident in the Corinthian churches that doesn’t apply to all women for all time. (For further information on this topic see the “Women” section of this brochure.) Is context important? Yes!

Paul could not have known that there were people with same gender sexual orientation.; any more than the author of Revelation could be aware that the heart was not the seat of the intellect or the kidneys the seat of emotions, which is an example of the scientific understanding of that time (see the original text of Rev. 2:23). Without an understanding of the sexual orientation it is likely that Paul regarded these people using same gender sexual relations to worship as heterosexuals who were going contrary to the “natural” accepted practice of heterosexual intimate relations.

We also must consider whether Paul was referring to same gender sexual relations in the context of worshipping a foreign god (as the beginning of chapter one implies) or in a nonmutual context, such as involving pederasty or slaves. In any case, even the most conservative theologian can only give their opinion as to what type of same gender acts Paul was referring to. No one can state that God clearly condemns the entire homosexual people and their expressions of intimacy in every context based upon these verses.

The central message of Romans chapters 1-3 proclaims that God’s Covenant of grace embraces all people; being a Jew doesn’t make you better than a Gentile. In that same spirit we can proclaim that being a heterosexual does not make you better than a homosexual.

The late Rev. Sylvia Pennington, in her book But Lord, They’re Gay, points out that once she thought that Romans 1: 29-32 described homosexuals (rather than Gentiles as a whole, which the context indicates) but when she finally met Christians with a homosexual orientation she knew that these people who worshipped Jesus Christ were not the people described in Romans 1:28-32 (who did not want to retain God in their knowledge) . The lesbians and gays Sylvia met impressed her as dear children of God who opened their hearts and minds to the presence and grace of Jesus Christ and received it.

By the way I agree that “Day Without a Gay” is a bad idea. It would only hurt the cause more.

Jessrules151: Okay, the whole passage and context of Gal. 3:26-29 again has nothing to do with sexual orientation! “There is neither Jew nor Greek, slave nor free, man nor female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus” (Gal 3:28) “Jew nor Greek” race, “slave nor free” status, “male nor female” gender, it says nothing about who you love! its talking about that race, status, and gender are under Christ, it never said those the lay with the same sex or opposite sex, it said the Male and Female are under God’s authority. Gen. 1:27 “So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them.” now lets look further on what God says Gen 1:28 “God blessed them and said to them ‘Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it. Rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air and over every living creature that moves on the ground’.” Gen 2:21-24 “So the Lord God caused the man to fall into a deep sleep; and while he was sleeping, he took one of the man’s ribs and closed up the place with flesh. Then the Lord God made a woman from the rib he had taken out of the man, and he brought her to the man. The man said, ‘This is now bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called ‘woman’ for she was taken out of man.’ For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his Wife, and they will become one flesh.” this shows that God created man and woman for each other for companionship and relationship. Also, “he created homosexuals, like all people in His image. (Gen. 1:27).” God did NOT create any homosexual, he created male and female, not 2 males.

Yes Romans 1:18-32 may get down to the root of the sin that Paul is talking about, pride, but symptoms of that are clearly shown, “Therefore God gave them over in the sinful desires of their hearts to sexual impurity for the degrading of their bodies with one another.” Rom 1:24. Then in 25 they worship idols, “Because of this, God gave them over to shameful lusts. Even their women exchanged natural relations for unnatural ones. In the same way the men also abandoned natural relations with women and were inflamed with lust for one another. Men committed indecent acts with other men, and received in themselves the due penalty for their perversion.” Rom 1:26-27. Hello! because of their pride they fell into sexual lusts for each other. Also Paul doesn’t specify about the sin of pride only referring to the Gentiles, he is talking about all of men, Jew or Gentile. Rom 1:18, “The wrath of God is being revealed from heaven against all the godlessness and wickedness of men who suppress the truth by their wickedness,” said nothing about the wickedness of the Gentiles.

O by the way you do a lot of copy and paste, is it to make a point? Yes all have sinned and have been given salvation because of the death of Jesus, but would i still go to heaven if I said i accepted Jesus and did the church goer things yet still lived in sin and never repented of it?

Chemfreak and his little follower. YOU GUYS ARE SOO FRIGGIN RELIGIOUS! God! i mean, you say that God said this and God said that, but you know what? Do you think that people can help being gay. They didn’t wake up one day and say “i think i wanna be gay.” NO! THEY DIDN’T! You don’t even know what it feels like! I don’t either, but i think that everyone has a right to be who they are. Do you have a thing against african americans? because it’s the same thing there. They didn’t choose to be african americans and yet they were discriminated against!!! YOU PEOPLE ARE SO SHALLOW MINDED. And you have to have a 13 year old tell you that.
Thankyou : think_thenspeak you’re the one who is right.

Jessrules151: you might want to think on this, Matthew 19:3-6, “Some Pharisees came to him to test him. They asked, ‘Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife for any and every reason?’ ‘Haven’t you read’ he replied, ‘that at the beginning the Creator ‘made them male and female’ and said, ‘For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and two will become one flesh’? So they are no longer two, but one. Therefore what God has joined together, let man not separate.”

Leviticus 18:21-22
Do not lie with a man as one lies with a woman; that is detestable.

Although I am a follower of the word of God I know and respect those who are not followers. I truely do not believe people are born gay, lesbian, or bisexual, but this is due in part to my beliefs. I could be wrong. In the end we shall find out. If you are homosexual you can still be a christian and have Jesus as you savior because being gay or lesbian will not mean eternity in hell as long as you believe in the Lord Jesus Christ.

Your right on something: I don’t know how it is to be homosexual, but your wrong on something too. I am not homophobic and I accept people for who they are and who they want to be, how they want to live, and what they believe. I may not be correct in what I believe but I do believe. I will not encourage you but I will respect you. So, please respect me too.

Also. I think ‘Day without Gay’ is a great way to ask for what you belive your rights are. As long as it is a peaceful demonstration I support it. Your not hurting anyone so to me it’s fine.

[215] Posted by: ShortPurpleShrub | February 4th, 2009 at 5:12 pm

bcbwnews: I will start by saying I did not copy and paste the comment on purpose, because intentional lying is a sin, not involuntary homosexuality. Sure, it would be possible to live life lying to yourself, but the truth is people who are gay never made a voluntary choice. Studies show animals in their natural habitat having homosexual relations. Humans are pretty much the same; the only difference is whether or not they would act on it. God did create homosexuals. If he didn’t want them to exist, he would not have blessed them with a sexual orientation. There is very little evidence of success among people that have tried to “correct” their mindset through prayer and the support of their church. If being gay were really a bad thing, God would have “fixed” them.

You asked “Would i still go to heaven if I said i accepted Jesus and did the church goer things yet still lived in sin and never repented of it?”(212). It depends what you mean by living in sin. If did the church goer things they would not live in sin, breaking His commandments and judging the innocent. If you sin and don’t repent, of course you won’t go to heaven, because you don’t really believe. If you really believed in God and his kingdom it would cause you to love and fear God, for all his wonders, making you do good and follow his Great Commandment. Being gay is simply embracing the gifts and love God has given you. It doesn’t hurt anyone. God would want all of his people to find love, in all its forms.
I interpreted the Romans passage to be talking about the Gentiles because of this passage: “For all that may be known of God by men lies plain before their eyes… they have refused to honour him as God”(Romans 1:19-22). I understood this to mean that although the evidence of God’s greatness was everywhere yet they chose not to believe. Again, when they talked about the same-sex behaviors they weren’t talking about homosexuality in general. God was not condemning homosexuality, but the impurity of sex without love and even prostitution “Males behave indecently with males, and are paid in their own persons the fitting wage of such perversion”(Romans 1: 27). The negativity was aimed at the sex practices used for idol worship and prostitution, not innocent same-gender love.

In the book on Genesis, of course God created one man and one woman. The idea of reproduction was necessary for the survival of our species, when it was just getting started. Now that we are not on the verge of extinction, I don’t think the go and procreate idea holds as much relevance. There are plenty of people out there now reproducing, homosexuals aren’t doing any harm. Again, context is important. Your quote (Matthew 19:3-6) does not denounce gays at all. God wanted people to reproduce, but now as stated before, times have changed. It is true that marriage creates a union that is unbreakable, and I think God would extend this sacrament to homosexuals too, although it is not said in the Bible. It is referred to as husband and wife because of the bias of the authors. Homosexuality was less accepted and more supressed although it was not less common. God inspired the Bible, but he did not directly write it. The general message “love your neighbor” should overrule persecution of the misunderstood.

Ha wow. I took the time to read through quite a few of these comments…and I decided to sign up for this website JUST so I could post one myself. I’m not gay, I’m not bi, I’m not any of those things. I’m as straight as a ruler.

However I am for gay marriage, relationships, etc. I think that as an American citizen it should be any man or woman’s right to do as he or she pleases as long as they aren’t hurting anyone! You may say for reproduction reasons that it’s wrong-but what about love? What about being happy? It’s not all about getting married and having a perfect family. What if someone told you that you were wrong for liking the person that you having feelings for? That you were about to marry? How do you think you would feel if thousands of people decided to gang up on you and tell you that you were a BAD PERSON? How would you react?

And then you Catholics, Christians, whatever you are go and say “God doesn’t accept gay people. It’s a sin. They’re going to hell.” That is one of the most absurd things I have ever heard in my entire life. I was born Catholic and I believe in God…but I also believe that if the Catholic/Christian God is supposed to be a kind-hearted, good god, that he would accept everyone…The bible says a lot of things, and people sin EVERYDAY even the most religious of them all…tons of gays are just as religious as them so why do the straight people get off the hook and those who are gay get taunted?
Gay people aren’t hurting anyone. You may say they tarnish society but really all of you people who are so BIASED, close-minded and have a COLD HEART truly are the ones that are damaging society. This is America people should live here with choices and certain freedoms…

SO, to all of you little religious people on this message board-get a life. Get a grip. Stop being so naive. Grow up. Step out into the REAL WORLD the 21st Century SOMETHING WE CALL REALITY and realize that you may believe in God and you may be Christian/Catholic but that doesn’t necessarily make you a good person. You may think God loves you more…whoop dee do. But other people will think poorly of you if you judge people by who and what they like. It’s about character…not sexual orientation. You weren’t put here to discriminate. Or speak for God. So do the world a favor and as mean as this sounds, shut the hell up. And leave people who are gay, alone. Because you have no right going around preaching to people.. let them be who they want to be and believe what they want, let them love whomever they feel is their soul mate…and don’t waste your life trying to tell them otherwise. If God really is good, he’ll accept EVERYONE and no gay people are NOT going to go to hell.

I’m Catholic but I believe that you love who you love. Why should people be treated differently for that? One of my best friends is gay and I have to say he is one of the funniest, crazy, perverted guys I know, and I wouldn’t have it any other way!

Oh, my, gosh. you people who are saying “gay is a sin, and marriage is an institution” are playing on the idea that this country was made on religion.
And, no, no it is absolutely not.
You wanna know one thing the founding fathers knew they couldn’t mix?
politics & religion. Because it causes an orgy of violence, namely, the seven years war. or, the french indian war as we know it to be. It was purely based on the fact that these people are on the side of an all-loving God. And, if you’re not on the side of God, then you’re on the side of Satan, and you must be destroyed, because there is no other way. THAT is what the founding fathers did NOT want for this country. So for people to say that gay marriage isn’t based on religion is a bad thing, because this country is a christian-based country, no.

heloo? Lui XIII was gay, and that is a well-known fact.
and he was a king. and kingdom was based on religion.
shame on him, according to gayhaters.
I believe in equality, and that homosexyality exists since mankind, so…what’s the big deal? everyone mind their own bussines.
The day without a gay is a good thing, not laziness,it’s not about ¨not working¨ it is just a way to make a point, to get out of the closet and fight for your rights. ( this also applies on bi’s, other nations and religions, and any kind of difference.)

the main problem with homosexuality and bisexuality is that young people think that it is cool to try new things. such wrong beliefs often give a way to homosexualit to children. I have nothing against homosexuality, but if people start giving too much rights to homosexuals, than your kid will come to your door tommorow with a boyfriend and he would think that it is normal and cool and fun.

ok, im not hating or close-minded, or watever you gay supporters are trying to call us. being gay or lesbo or watev u want to call it is just not right. Yes, I know the argument. “Why shouldn’t they be with the one they love? Whatst the big deal? Its nature!” I personally don’t think it was intended by God. But, for the sake of athesists, buddist, or muslims, ill put my spiritual beliefs aside. its doesn’t work. put beliefs aside and think. your job in life is to produce offspring. u can’t if u r with a gay person (that means u r 2). and if we r using the argument that it just occurs in nature, well war, hatred, crimes, evil all occur in nature. so r they okay too? we don’t have to listen to the gay vioce. just like we don’t have ot go kill a bunch of hobos becuase an inner voice is telling us to. And being by….no that is a whole nother issue. its gross and wrong and sick. i mean ok. pick one already (and please pick the opposite sex for the sake of us all!) its just well, gayiety and all that is just another reason our world is so wrong. (were all going ot hell! yay!) its just makes you look around and ask what our world is coming too! (brintey spears makes me think that too…)

Jessrules151:

I would like to clarify something, God did NOT create homosexuals. why? because in the beginning he created His universe in 6 days and the 7 day he rested and he never created anything after that. Homosexuality came after the Fall of Man, when Sin entered our universe and corrupted our nature into a sinful nature, for every born child is born a sinner. God could “fix” us but he doesn’t why? because he respects our decision enough to let us make that hard decision to either follow Him or the World.

Here is a passage that I thought fitting for this discussion, 1 Cor. 6:9-11 “Do you not know that the wicked will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: Neither the sexually immoral nor idolaters nor adulterers nor male prostitutes nor HOMOSEXUAL (caps added) offenders nor thieves nor the greedy nor drunkards nor slanderers nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God. And that is what some of you were. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.” (New International Version) Now I don’t know about you, but it says that homosexual offenders will not inherit the kingdom unless they are washed, sanctified, and justified by Jesus. Now i know Matthew 19:6-9 doesn’t denounce homosexuality, but it does state the importance of marriage between a man and a woman.

So far you have not given me any evidence that homosexuality is right or that it was created. So please, if you can, give that to me because i am wondering where you got that information.

Get to know a gay person before you judge them. I thought they were weird, and then it turns out that one of my best friends is gay. He’s still one of my best friends and I love talking to him about it. There isn’t anything wrong with him… I think if gays want equality though… when someone makes a gay joke, laugh about it. (i’m using gay jokes as an example, anything else along these lines works) If you want equality, then you should act like you deserve it… If there was equality, then gays would laugh at gay jokes, just like my best friend does when I make gay jokes. Take one of my other friends for example, he’s black. I told him a really racist black joke and he laughed so hard I thought he was gonna die. I realize gay people are getting jiffed on the all the bogus laws and all that, but you guys shouldn’t go about changing them by bitching at straight people. Try to take a more mature road. Perhaps even laugh at a gay joke.

Doyle24: i know it may seem that I am judging, but there is a difference from what me and jessrules151 are doing and actually judging someone specific about being gay. I know gay people and they are awesome. My sisters best friend is gay and hes pretty cool. I know it is wrong to be gay, but even though i have the view of seeing it wrong i don’t judge people because of it. But i do wish to let them know that God has something better and for more greater to offer than what homosexuality offers. that probably sounded wrong writing it, but the point is that God does love everyone, but he hates the sin that we do. and if i have offened anyone else because of my writing i am sorry. :)

im sick of hearing this “gay is not a choice” bs. THERE IS NO GAY GENE. u wanna say it isnt a conscience choice fine but it is PROVEN that there is no gay gene. i agree God made all people and he loves them all, however, people sin. gay is a sin. this day without gay is hilarious and will totally backfire. the gay community thinks WAY too much of itself and it will maybe realize this when everyone other than california doesnt even notice this happened hahaha

I agree with both bcbwnews and glopop2010.

I don’t believe there is a Gay Gene and I do believe homosexuality is choice.
I also want to say we shouldn’t judge gays for being gay. I have me t several gay and lesbian people who are very nice but I still don’t agree with them, but I’m not going to judge them because it’s not my job. Leave the judging up to God!!!

Okay, *Louis XIII may have been gay, but um, in the declaration, we’re addressing King George III. And America isn’t a kingdom, not based on religion, so that made no sense, no offense.

I see a lot of morons trying to put down homosexuality.

I don\’t give a damn if being what I am is against you losers\’ religion because I don\’t follow it. Although there is no \”gay gene\” and it isn\’t necessarily genetics at all, homosexuality/bisexuality/pan sexuality/heterosexuality isn\’t exactly a choice. I didn\’t choose to like girls but I am who I am and if I offend you, I don\’t f**king care. I can\’t change myself, I wouldn\’t if I could, and it\’s narrow mindedness and ignorance to what you personally don\’t understand that can cause trouble. It pisses me off that anyone thinks they have a right to tell me I\’m wrong. What the hell did I ever do to you? Why do you care? You don\’t have to kiss my girlfriend. How I live my life doesn\’t even affect you. When people wanted to free the slaves, a lot of others thought that it would ruin America. When women wanted the vote, a lot of guys thought they would take over. And now people have the same stupid fear, hate, anger, and other malicious thoughts and feelings towards guys that like guys and girls that like girls.

You can rant, you can call me an idiot, you can point out what you don\’t like about me or think is wrong with me or whatever, but just know that you can\’t change me, and even if you disagree, you don\’t have the right to judge me. I may be shunned at school and at home simply because of my orientation, but I refuse to hate myself or anything about me just because someone else doesn\’t like it. I have to live with being me. You don\’t. So screw your hateful views. Tolerance is what I wanna see. A world where we can live and let live even if we have opposing views. A world where I don\’t get beaten up after school and called hateful names because of my orientation. A world where there is no prejudice for any reason, be it about race, orientation, religion, or anything else. That is what I want to see. But that\’s just me. You can be hateful all you want. It isn\’t going to help anything.

Can I just say a apecies is defined by: related individuals that resemble one another, and are able to breed amongst themselves. If your gay you can’t reproduce well you could but chances are you won’t. Being gay is biologically wrong and biblically wrong. I believe being gay is wrong but I’m not telling you to change and if you are going to change don’t change for people who dislike it change for yourself and/or God. Be less sinnful. Just a suggestion and please respect me because I respect you. I’m not a homophobic and I don’t hate them. I know several people and while I don’t agree with them I’m still civil to them and I’m a descent person as are they.

I agree 100% with heathaphs

It’s SINFUL it’s SINFUL it’s SINFUL. Religion is a HORRIBLE reason to use against any idea, concept, group of people, or anything at all because different people believe in different things and some don’t believe at all. Orientation shouldn’t be a religious issue. No God wrote the Bible. The Bible was written by man; it’s CLAIMED to be God’s word. Even if it’s EXACTLY what God said, not everyone is a devoted Christian. There are so many other religions in the world. Many are vastly different. Better switch gears, I’m starting to ramble.

This is the main reason I don’t believe in God. I was raised to be a Christian, but I cannot fathom worshiping a being that rejects me. SINFUL. It’s WRONG. Ever stop to think that maybe you’re wrong? Maybe I’m a human being just the same. Maybe I deserve to be treated and seen as one. Maybe there are already enough people in this world and reproduction shouldn’t be an issue. Overpopulation, people. I think we should be worrying more about the genocide in Darfur or the economy or something that actually matters instead of what the gays are doing, or who disagrees with them.

I hate it how people can commit adultery or do drugs or drink or hit their kids but as long as their sorry, praise Jesus! They’re saved! But if you’re a homosexual, then by God, you’re a sinner. Who cares if you love someone in a tender way. If they’re the same gender, then you’re a freakin’ sinner. And anyone who disagrees with homosexuality or anything of the like should just not care and mind their own business. It isn’t their life. If they think that the homos are going to hell then let them. Live your own life and forget about theirs if you can’t tolerate it.

PS. This is specifically at heathaphs and off topic, but I’m curious as to how agreeing with yourself makes your opinion right, or stronger or something…? Seriously what is that trying to prove?

[236] Posted by: ToddTolensky | February 7th, 2009 at 12:50 am

ToddTolensky: There are some things i agree about your statement, such as that we as people should be more concerned about Darfur and what is happening there. The economy will go back up eventually so its so much of a big concern. But God hasn’t rejected you, He loves every human being on this planet, those that are and those to come. He does however hate the sin we live in, and what He wants from us is to strip off the sin and what it falsely promises and follow Him to embrace His love. Hehe, that sounded like a hippie. But it is more than just saying sorry and then all is well, you must recognize the sin that which you commit, and with truthfully saying so, give it to God and repent. Now you may do the exact same sin over and over, don’t be discouraged for it means that you have major working to do in that area.

Gay is wrong. Since the begining of time people knew it was wrong. It’s biblically and biologically wrong. A person can’t have children with a person of the same gender, so it doesn’t make sense. God even says it’s wrong. People aren’t born gay they’re born straight. They act on their confused feelings. If a guy says he that guy is attractive they automatically think they’re gay and start acting on those feelings. If they really wanted to they could be straight. And another thing I hate how girls start being bisexual because they think it’s cool. OH yeah three-some. Guys think it’s hott for lesbians to kiss at least thats what someone I know thinks, and that’s why some girls become bi when they’re really not; to be cool. I think homosexuals are gross. I’m not a homophob I just think it’s not right. And, no I’m not discriminating they can have their Day without Gay and get married but I don’t think they should. It’s a slap in the face for a man and a woman who take traditional wedding vows. Marriage is a tie between a MAN and a WOMAN not a man and a man or woman and a woman. Why do you think we’re like the only country that will start to marry gays? It’s becasue other countries knows it’s wrong.

God looks for love of others but not in a sexual way.

Forget this. I didn’t comment here to get insulted. I don’t have to listen to why people think I’m fucked up and wrong and that it’s all about sex. I’m a virgin, you know, and I intend to be for a long time. I don’t think it’s “cool” to be bisexual or homosexual or anything like that. And for a few years I wanted to be straight. I used to lie since the sixth grade that I was because I was ashamed because of people like you guys here. I tried to like guys. I didn’t admit that I didn’t to myself until almost a year ago. But I’m not and I can’t be what I’m not. You think I can but I can’t. And I don’t want to waste my short life feeling sorry just because I don’t have the desire to screw guys. I don’t want to live my entire life feeling like I’m messed up. I don’t want to “repent” to your God. I just want to live my life. Maybe if I were in your shoes I could understand your opinion, but maybe if you were in mine you could understand how I feel.

FlowerGirl0484: Your opinion is a slap in the face to people like me. It goes both ways. You think its wrong to be homosexual, homosexuals think it’s wrong to see it from your point of view. This isn’t one way. I never tried to change anyone’s opinion here because that’s how they see life and that’s their religion and even if I disagree, I don’t have right to tell anyone to change, including you, and you have a right to see it that way. I just wanted to speak up about how it is from my point of view. But I don’t think anyone on this thread thing have a right to tell me to change either. Just pointing that out.

I’m done here. I don’t have anything kind to say and no matter what I say it isn’t gonna get anyone to understand what it’s like from the other side of the issue, so it’s just wasting our time. Besides, there are too many logical fallacies and blatant insults in my arguments so I’m really not helping my argument anyway.

I love reading all the different sides of this, first of all. I’m straight, but I believe that gays should have the same rights as everyone else.
To those people who want proof about that “gay gene”: There may or may not be one, no one has really defined the cause. If the cause IS genetic, it might not be as simple as the one for blue eyes or brown hair. Autism might be genetic or environmental, but scientists haven’t found a cause (genetic or environmental) to explain away Autism. Does that mean that all Autistics woke up one day and decided to be Autistic? I’m sure that’s not what one in every 150 American three-year-olds did on purpose. Since sexuality manifests usually during puberty, it makes sense that people realize it around that time. It may be just the way that some people’s brains are wired differently, them being gay or Autistic or prone to depression or any such thing.
And using religion in your argument? Not everyone practices the same religion as you do. Going back to the Autism analogy, If there was another prominent religion that said that having Autism is a sin in THEIR holy book, the followers of that religion would ranting long and fervently about how THEY are sinners and shouldn‘t be allowed to practice sin by acting in an Autistic manner. I don’t care if you insist that Christianity is the true religion, you simply cannot base what should happen based on your personal beliefs.

I’m heterosexual, but I seriously hate people saying that people choose to be gay. Considering the fact that all people want to be considered normal, and that being gay is considered ABNORMAL, why would anyone CHOOSE to be not normal? Considering the fact that homosexuals have to deal with harassment day in and day out, you’re trying to tell me that they CHOOSE all of that?

When there’s so much hate in this world, one would think that people would praise the ones who aren’t afraid to show their love for others, even if the ones that they love are of the same gender. But, for some reason beyond my realm of understanding, they do! It makes it even worse when people I happen to be good friends with and care a lot about have to deal with stupid Bible thumpers hating homosexuality and saying it’s a sin. Isn’t hatred sinful too? Didn’t you just violate your own holy book? Your “God” made people, and some people are gay, so therefore, that same “God” had a place for them in his plan. This is exactly why gays should have all the rights of straight people, because this country was not built on Christianity, but on freedom. And freedom is deserved by all Americans, because whether they are heterosexual, homosexual, or asexual, because it is a right they were born with!

[245] Posted by: llancto | February 7th, 2009 at 11:21 pm

I am heterosexual and I understand the argument that marriage is a sacred, religious practice, so although I personally am not opposed to gay ‘marriage’ that’s fine, call it a civil union, whatever. But to deny gay people rights is asanine. That’s just like denying black people rights, or women. It goes against everything our country is founded on. “All men are created equal.” The declaration of independence does not say “All men except homosexuals are created equal.” Our country has overcome inequality before and it will continue to in the future.

[246] Posted by: ashleyb211 | February 8th, 2009 at 2:33 pm

In my opinion you can’t compare gay rights to women’s rights or african american rights. Gay is a choice being a male or a female or being whatever race you are is not a choice it’s something you born with. There is NO gay gene. Gays are just people acting on their “confused” feelings. Being gay goes against everything; including the Bible and biology. Species are supossed to reproduce and people of the same gender can’t. So it’s scientifically biologically biblically WRONG! Believe me I’m not a homophobe and I respect everyone and anyone and their choice. I just don’t agree with it. Why do you think we’re like the only country to legalize gay marriage? It’d cause every other country knows it’s wrong too.

[247] Posted by: FlowerGirl0484 | February 8th, 2009 at 4:11 pm

Whether or not acting on their feelings is a choice, the state of being gay still is not. Let’s face it, people cannot help who they are attracted to. Will someone PLEASE explain to me how being gay could possibly be a choice, when everyone is well aware of how much discrimination homosexuals face? Will someone PLEASE explain to me why a person would choose that?

bcbwnews: At what age did you decide not to become a homosexual? So far you have given me no conclusive evidence that God does not accept homosexuals. Looks like we’ve reached a stalemate :)

I CORINTHIANS 6:9-10 - Malakoi in a list

Pastors and laypersons often have to rely upon the authority of those who have written language dictionaries (called lexicons) explaining the meaning of words in Greek, Hebrew and Aramaic. The authors of scriptural lexicons search for the meaning of a word within the Bible and also go outside of scripture, researching literature written around the same time.

In the verse we are concerned with we encounter a list and there is no context to define any of the words contained in that list. “Do not be deceived neither the immoral, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor ‘malakoi’, nor ‘arsenokoitai’, nor thieves, nor the greedy, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor robbers will inherit the kingdom of God.” (I Cor. 6:9b-10).

A few years ago a young man once loudly proclaimed to this author “the word ‘arsenokoitai’ means ‘homosexual’. It says so in lexicon after lexicon.” The problem with such a statement is that it ignores the difficulty translators encounter with some Bible passages. The fact is sometimes they end up making educated “guesses”, which then introduces the possibility that translators may apply current cultural understanding into the translation of such a passage.

This is clearly exhibited in the Revised Standard translation which applies the one English word “homosexual” to two Greek concepts “malakoi” and “arsenokotai” and erases the connotations they carried with them, applying current cultural connotations. The word “homosexual” was first coined in late 1800’s by German psychologists and introduced into English in the beginning of the 1900’s. (See Christianity, Social Tolerance, and Homosexuality, John Boswell, University of Chicago Press, 1980, page 42) Today it has come to mean a person of the male or female gender who is sexually oriented toward someone of the same gender. Greek contained no such word - only words for same gender sexual acts . (Re:”arsenokoitai”, see Boswell, pp 345-346.)

“Malakoi” is a very common Greek word. It is used in Matthew 11:7-18 and Luke 7:24-25 in reference to “soft” clothing. In Matthew 4:23, 9:35, and 10:1 it connotes illness. The word then can mean soft, delicate, weakness or infirmity. Apparently textual context determines the exact intended meaning.

The early church Fathers used the word to mean someone who was “weak” or “soft” in their morals, and from the time of the reformation to the 20th century it was usually interpreted as masturbation. So why do some people today interpret the word as “homosexual”?

I believe that if gay people want to call in gay then there is nothing to stop them. Seriously, if they think that that will help their cause they should go right ahead. I am a supporter of gay rights even though I’m heterosexual. I am disgusted with the Christians that preach about how it’s morally and ethically wrong. If being gay is wrong, then God should come down and change them. Think about it this way, being gay is just loving a different person. It’s not like gay people can change, it’s in their nature, and because it’s in their nature, it’s safe to assume God put it there. Oh, and if people argue that gay people have been “influenced by the devil” or other nonsense, they should remember that God overcomes the devil in everything but human choice. Being gay is not a choice. You don’t choose who you love, you just love.

[250] Posted by: hearthwoman | February 8th, 2009 at 7:31 pm

The people relying on “gays can’t reproduce” are idiots. There are millions of people who are infertile and thus incapable of reproducing, so does that mean they shouldn’t get to be with who they love, too? And sex may be meant for reproduction, but go up to most people and they aren’t going to tell you they do it because they’re trying to have a baby.

Relying on the Bible is also ridiculously stupid. It was written thousands of years ago. It has been altered by people based on what they wanted you to read. Maybe it says being gay is a sin, but it also says you can’t eat seafood, and it says a senior citizen was able to buid a huge boat.

Maybe in the Western World, gayness has been considered wrong. But in many other parts of the world (including America, before Europeans came) there has been gay marriage, and they had no problem with it.

There’s no reason why being gay should be considered wrong, none at all!

Is murder wrong? Yes so your saying since God doesn’t like murder he can change murderers yoo. Yes He can but He won’t becasue he gave us free will. It’s the same thing. God doesn’t like gays but its their free will. God doesn’t like murderers but they also have free will. It’s he same concept.

another response toward SilverSky333:
I would very much apreciate it if you respected christians. don’t bash our beliefs its disrespectful. If you read or knew anything about the Bible and God you would know the story of Noah and be able to accurately make intelligent remarks about it and not pointless stuff you make up. It upsets me and offends me when you bash my God’s holy word. Please don’t. Bashing opinions is one thing but bashing my beliefs is another. The Bible has been translated yes but not altered. Do you know how they made copies of the Bible hundreds of years ago? Probably not because you didn’t bother to look into it. Well, here I’ll help. Back then a sigle person would sit for hours copying the Bible letter by letter not word by word. They were not allowed to memorize the words they could only look over and see a single letter to copy nad they did that for ever word so it wouldn’t be altered. This job was taken extremely seriously if they messed up once they had to start that whole page over.

You know I think we have forgotten a major part of this whole issue, I know i have. It is the part that has been corrupted near the beginning of creation, it is our sinful nature. After the Fall of Man, sin has effected everything. Yes i believe that homosexuality was one of many results of our sinful nature. What does God want us to do with this sinful nature? take it off and put on the new Christ like nature that he has made for us. So even if homosexuals happen to be naturally attracted to each other it doesn’t make it right. Jessrules151: i looked up those 2 terms you brought up and arsenokotai most likely means perversion in the old text, since it most referred to perverts, and things of the like. And guess what homosexuality is a perversion from the original nature that God made with Adam and Eve. So again the bible doesn’t not have to state homosexuality bluntly, it just has to state the general concept and everything falls to place. Now you mentioned a long time ago about a church that had lots of homosexual couples that heart fully praised God, now I have no clue how to answer that situation. But in the Church there are two parts of being a Christian, substitution (the knowledge of Jesus dying for our sins) and representation (our daily active walk with Christ). Most Christian’s, I am like this a lot but i am trying to live a life with Christ, just take the knowledge of knowing that Jesus died for us and that if we repent and go to church every sunday and do all of the church lists we will go to heaven. In this area we will also may have a lot of head knowledge of everything to know about Christianity. But the difference between substitution and representation, is that we take our knowledge and use it on our walk with Christ. We may know everything but if we don’t get up off our asses and do something about this then we haven’t really served God. We as Christians must experience what it is like to follow Christ. Helping the poor outside your door or going across the world to spread the word, either way you will be helping and serving the God Almighty. But like i said before I am a hypocrite, I have all this head knowledge yet i am too lazy to use it. But isn’t our first steps in progressing is finding our own faults, our have someone else tell us?

So if you will pray for me for my hypocrisy and pray for me to find the true path of Christ and what he wants in my life.

Thanks, Zach Newcomb

I could honestly give a crap about whether a gay lives with a partner or not, as long as it doesnt affect me in any way. I really dont think they should be able to get married. They can live together, sure, but marriage is for a man and a woman. If they want to be legally conjoined, they can call it something else and let it but just a legal thing. Another thing, the fact that gays wanna even consider adopting children of their own is completely ridiculous! I dont want to have to explain to my future son why tommy has two dads instead of the normal one dad and mom.

I am so upset I didn’t acknowledge this holiday!!! What an amazing idea it is. Finally let the world acknowledge homosexual discrimination and inequality. As a 17 yr old African American female, I of all ppl know about discrimination. My ancestors and I have had our share! I sympathize with ANY group tht suffers injustice and under GOD everyone is equal. Who are we to judge others because they are different. And for the ppl tht say the Bible says…
I dont agree. #1 the Bible was written by man, and who are we to say tht we know GOD’s will? I do read the Bible and study theology at school but wht I get out of it is tht GOD/Jesus sympathizes with the oppressed and misunderstood.

BTW, SOME OF THE STUFF PPL WRITE HERE IS CRAZY IGNORANT! U DONT HAVE TO BE GAY TO REALIZE THT GAY PPL ARENT GETTING MARRIAGE RIGHTS NOT BECAUSE IT IS CONSIDERED “IMMORAL”, BUT BECAUSE CONSERVATIVE PPL ARE SCARED! IF MARRIAGE CHAPELS EXIST IN LAS VEGAS AND A 20 YR OLDS CAN MARRY RICH 80 YR OLDS, THEN MORALITY OBVIOUSLY ISNT THE ISSUE!!

[259] Posted by: aarrrrgghh75 | February 9th, 2009 at 8:52 pm

first off, the idiocy and ignorance of some of the things that are posted on this article make me sick. You people are the reason why the American society is declining and a great contributing factor to social injustice.

Next, I believe in God, I believe in Jesus. I don’t, however, devour every word of the Bible as if it fell from the sky saying, “by the way, I wrote this–Love, God.” Here’s a little news flash for you over-zealous religious fanatics: the Bible was composed during the Council of Nicaea during the reign of the Roman Emperor Constantine. Now, I don’t know any specifics, but I’m willing to guess that maybe these Romans could have altered some of the stories found in the Bible to fit their needs. Obviously, the Old Testament was written before this, as Judaism existed thousands of years before Jesus came to the Earth. However, many things in the Old Testament are not practiced today (i.e. stoning adultresses). If you honestly believe that God HATES gay people, I feel sorry for you. I don’t necessarily believe in Hell (God is merciful and I don’t think he would condemn someone in that way) but I sincerely hope that if it does exist, “social intolerance” “religious zealotry” and “hatred of others” are all criteria for getting in. You deserve it.

Ok, so religion out of the way. I’m straight, yet I believe that gays should have every right to live as they so choose. Crazy right? Gay people don’t have a choice not to be gay. But this is not really even an issue. If you chose to be a Jew, you’d be pissed off if you couldn’t get married too. I don’t think straight people really have the right to say what it is like to be gay. we don’t know. But we do know that social intolerance and HATRED are so-called sins, if that’s what you believe, and if you don’t, at least we can agree that hating someone for being different is morally wrong.

For those of you who think you are doing gay people a “favor” by trying to convert them. Let it go. It’s not your place to decide what’s right for other people. Also, for those of you who liken homosexuality to robbing a bank. Are you serious? Do you actually believe that? If you do, I really hope that someone sets you straight in the future…

Its been said that no one is 100% straight or 100% gay. I think that those people who spread hatred against homosexuals jsut have an inability to come to terms with this fact. They are afraid of accepting the fact that they may think a member of the same sex is attractive and are inflecting their own personal troubles onto the rest of humanity. I’m not saying that straight people can use this as an excuse to sleep around with members of the same sex, if you do this, you’re probably gay. Not gonna lie to you. But simply by acknowledging the fact that you have some “gay tendencies” just like the rest of humanity does, I think you would be much more accepting and tolerant.

But what do I know? I’m not going to decide for you. Keep your opinions. Just don’t get in the way of other people.

A lot of the posts seem very Judeo-Christian centric. Although our country was founded on these values, it is not representative of everyone. But I digress, I’m not sure if “calling off gay” is the path I would have chosen for protest, but as long as the protests are peaceful, I will continue to be a heterosexual supporter of gay rights.

Ok, to clarify myself i never said that God hates homosexuals, he hates the sin of homosexuality but not the person.

The whole idea is dumb….like black history month. It isnt even remotely close to equal rights - would I EVER get away with calling in to work “straight” ? No. All these efforts are self-contradicting. (we want equal rights…so lets demand inequality?) They never do anything for the front line of action. The brutality of the issue is that there isnt anything gay’s can do about it so they fall back on pointless efforts….try focusing on something that will help…who knows maybe the next president will Hilary Clinton, an obvious lesbian :)

iight, Im not gay, but i don’t see the reason for it being so controvecial!!! That whole adam and eve/steve thing is a sorry excuse to not accept gays. Im not religious either, but the few times i have gone to church, (many diff churches) they have all preached acceptance and how GOD LOVES EVERYONE!!! who are you or i to judge someone based on their sexual preferance!?!? As i see it, whose business is it other than your partner(s) and you what you do in your (or their) bedroom or place of intamacy!?!?!?!?!?!?! Sexuality and what occurs between people is a private matter and it should be no one elses business other than you and your partener! Also, it shouldn’t be your businees what other people do together, wether it be a hook up or more than that.

[266] Posted by: xxJuggiexx | February 10th, 2009 at 10:08 pm

also, that whole issue about gay marriage, only MA allows gay marriage, (again) after CA revoked the law that allowed gay marriage (STUPID! prop.8), all you strait people that don’t agree with it, i respect your opinion, but for a moment, imagine life if the tables were turned and you were in their shoes. then, only gays would be allowed to marry and not strait ppl! and straits were the ones discriminated against! Wouldn’t you be angry if you couldn’t marry the person you love? Wouldn’t you fight and fight for equal rights? By hating and not accepting it, you are basically saying “hey, screw human rights!” then every other human right would cave in as well.

[267] Posted by: xxJuggiexx | February 10th, 2009 at 10:18 pm

I am Catholic. I am about to counter the beliefs of most hardcore Christians (and of the entire Republican party): It is ridiculous that men and women who have no intention of having children (which, as clearly dictated in the Bible, is the only reason to get married) should be able to become husband and wife when homosexuals who might be planning to adopt and save a LIFE do not have this right. If marriage is only for creating life and carrying on the human race, then why is a couple which never has children justifiable if they are straight, but not if they are gay? It’s not a choice. They are born that way.

Hooray for Massachusetts! They are certainly thinking correctly. Hopefully more states (ahem, California) will take notice and do the right thing.

i’m sorry, this is one of the most DUMB things i’ve ever heard of.
also, I’m not for “gay rights”. I do belive that being gay is a choice, and a sin.
i think that is something was truly “good” it would not destry. Gay Marriage would destroy the whole institiution of marrige. also. I have seen what homosexuality can do. It has destroyed, churches, synagouges, and freindships. If this was a “natural” and “good thing, it would not destroy. and as for the “God loves everyone argument”, yes that is true. BUT we must seperate sinner from sin. It’s the SINNER we must love. Kids do dumb things, but parents should/do still love them. when they get angry, it is the CHOICE theyre angry at, no t the child. Anger is not the right response, fro BOTH sides. no more “God hates gays” rallies, because he DOESNT, and no more “Day w/o a Gay” because gays are ppl, just like everyone else. If we have “Gay Days” for equality, the all are entitled to their special day, “srtaight days”, “Asian days”, “Black days,” etc……..
I’m sorry, this is just dumb.

Thank you MissDavid for saying all of that.

I completely agree with you!

Remember, God made Adam and Eve, not Adam and Steve.

Being gay is neither a sin or a choice.
I cannot believe you people.
I am straight and I believe in Gay Rights.
They are just like you and me.
They deserve to have the same rights.
They are PEOPLE.
Are they harming you in any way?
Please tell me how.
Its not your life. Its theirs.

Gays are people.
But I am against gay rights.
It’s unnatural, it’s wrong.

We allow gays to get married, but don’t allow fetus’ to live?
How does that make sense?

[272] Posted by: music95 | February 11th, 2009 at 8:30 pm

You people are all so silly. Life is far too important a thing to ever take seriously. However, since so many insist on taking it so seriously, us gays are forced to get serious back on you. Really in shouldn’t matter so much. Gays should have the same rights automatically. Whether it is “right” or not shouldn’t be an issue. Homosexuality is not a choice, but that shouldn’t even matter. Even if it was a choice, people have the right to live as they like as long as it doesn’t encroach on other people’s rights. Church and state are separate, right? This is a free nation is it not? True, there is no “gay gene”, but that still doesn’t make it a choice. I believe the popular theory is that certain prenatal hormones are involved. Homosexuality has been accepted for thousands of years in many cultures, even in early Christianity. You can say that it says homosexuality is a sin in the Bible, but it also says you can’t wear clothes of two different fabrics, eat seafood, and that adulteresses must be stoned. Those are outdated rules from an entirely different time. Also its not like God sat there a dictated the words in the Bible. Humans still have free will and can right whatever the hell they like and call it “the word of God”. I think the Day without a Gay is a fairly good idea. I’m not sure how well it would work, but its a little bit of peaceful protest, which is always good. As for those of you who say there should be a day without a straight; are you stupid? That doesn’t really make sense. The day is about protesting out lack of rights. Are straights being discriminated against because of who they love and denied the right of marriage? No. So, uh, duh.

i like gay ppl!
i think that everyone is entitled to their own opinion but that sometimes it is better to be quiet and thought a fool than to open your mouth and remove all doubt..

sure i mean ill admit that it might be a little awkward to walk around duringg the day and see gays being with eachtoher..
but people who are together man to woman are allowed the right to date when and where they please [we are in america and ppl should have equal rights! ]

also if ppl are saying that they will be bothered by waiting in line at the grocery store and having a gay couple holding hands and kissing in front of them…
you dont have any idea what you are talking about! really open your eyes.
listten to this:
as of right now gay ppl are aloud in public wherever they want to be
do you see themm making out in grocery stores right now.?
no you dont..
if anythingg it seems that gay couples have more respect for P.D.A than the “biblical” couples.
hahahaha at skool i see girls and guys making out non-stop.
at dances hands up skirts
&& sex in bathrooms.?

there is nothing wrong with being gay at all.
and NO I AM NOT GAY
but i have a very strong opinion and think that ppl need to keep their
“biblical” comments to them selves.
if you were really that concernd with what the bible says is correct then you would know that
all men are created equally

well thats lovely but whatever christians or god or individuals or the law or science or nature or politicians say, whether you heard about it or not, people have been gay as long as time has existed, people are gay now, and people are gonna be gay for as long as time continues to exist so you might as well all get over it and shut up

it’s a choice. and a sickness. im homophobic and forever will be. I love how it’s legal in the bahamas to stone homosexuals.

[276] Posted by: HitmanGeared | February 12th, 2009 at 9:54 pm

I don’t understand why everyone gets all riled up about sexual preference. It’s no less “normal” that heterosexuality. A vast majority of scientific evidence shows sexual orientation being determined by parts of the brain that can’t be controlled. So how could it be a sickness then? How is it wrong?
If some “god” hated homosexuals so much, why did it create them?

I can’t believe that people are still so bent out of shape about homosexuality. HOW could you condemn someone for being interested in the same sex? HOW could you say that someone is different because of their skin color, because of their gender, because of their sexual orientation, because of ANYTHING?
We are all humans. We all breathe the same air, have the same blood coursing through our veins, look up at the same sun and the same moon every day. HOW does that make something wrong? How does that make us unequal?

I, personally, don’t have a problem with gays. I respect them and all, I just believe that marriage was between a man and a woman. I think it’s pretty lame that they “call in gay”. Someone said it was like “calling in straight”. It’s just something you don’t do. Someone else said something about the stupid commercial where Wanda Sykes comes out and says don’t say “That’s so gay,” and all of that. I think that is really stupid. I say “That’s so gay,” maybe more than I should, but I think it’s stuipd that they are putting out commercials that say not to say it. At the end of the commercial it says “Knock it off!” It’s SO annoying. I hate those commercials. Someone also said that gays can’t have kids…obviously they haven’t thought of the STDs they spred around along with AIDS. I’m not saying that gays are the only to do that, it’s just the majority, or so I’ve heard. Also, someone else (I feel bad I’m like going off of everyone else’s comments) said that gays go to hell. I can’t believe they said that. Homesexual individuals do not go to hell. It just ludacris!

Anyway if you don’t get it sad, but if you do well don’t hate me for laughing.

Do gay people really think that this will make a difference? There aren’t enough gay people out there to make this work. Sorry, but unless you go to a hair stylist every day, this “day without a gay” will not harm anyone. Maybe if they had more prestigious jobs, then this might make a difference. However, if they were that smart they wouldn’t be gay to begin with. Gay people think that people are going to come to their aid. What they need to realize is that people are getting annoyed by their constant complaints and pathetic protests! They preach tolerance, but they are NOT willing to tolerate others. They say don’t spread hate, but they are MORE than willing to spread it. Hypocrites. They are digging their own graves.

I dont care if they have a DAY WITHOUT GAY. I mean they should’nt be disciminated against. Let them do what they want, they’re people too. Im not gay and I dont think my family approves of being gay, however im not homophobic and its their decision. They should be able to enjoy their orientation and not be discriminated against.

i think truth09 is being a little harsh but i see your point. i noticed absolutely nothing different about this day. its sad that its even necessary. straight america needs to get over itself and stop thinking sexual orientation is a basis for any differences. and people have a right to protest just as if this were a race issue. i just don’t think this was the most effective way to do it.

[287] Posted by: minniemouse7 | February 15th, 2009 at 8:02 pm

People need to understand that a majority of gay people are born the way they are. They have done studies on gay men and the structure of their brain is formed more like the brain of a female. Not to say that woman have different brain structures that makes man or woman any more or less equal but the simularities of the gay mans brain and the womans brain were in the sexual part of the brain. Gay men and gay woman should have the rights as any other humans. Saying that gay people don’t deserve the same rights as straight people is completely crazy. We have had these problems in the past, with race, and with gender. It will just take time for society to change, just as it has in the past.

[288] Posted by: thehunt235 | February 15th, 2009 at 10:09 pm

As i read the comment, people are saying that if there are gay days there will have to be other holidays for blacks, whites, men, and woman. Well if you look at a calender there are days for all of these things. Martin Luther King Jr. day is a momentous holiday for African American people. MLK day isnt just a day for him, it is a day for all African Americans. People have to look deeper than just a name, and look into the real meaning of what these days are for. A “gay day” isnt just a party for gay people. It is a day to help spread word of gay rights and a day that people are supposed to think about the real meaning, not just the name.

[289] Posted by: thehunt235 | February 15th, 2009 at 10:27 pm

“there’s no gay gene”
um, shut up, ok?
because, it’s a freaking fact that a lot of lesbian and gay people’s brains are developed DIFFERENTLY than straight peoples. for example, women use both sides of their brains more than men. thus, our hypothalamus (what connects the two hemispheres of our brain) is significantly larger than men’s. this is also true in gay men. to be frank, gay men’s brains are more feminine than straight men’s.

and another thing to the people preaching that being gay is a choice, i really don’t think so. why would someone choose to be judged by and rejected by half of society? why would they choose to have problems with family, friends, and social enviornments overall?
have you people thinking being gay is a choice ever talked to a gay person?
most of them try SO hard to “not be gay” before coming out. it’s a struggle that straight people will never truly understand.

and i’m not saying that there aren’t people who try to be gay because they think it’s cool or something, because i’m sure there are. but for the majority of gay people, they don’t choose.

[290] Posted by: melissmarko | February 15th, 2009 at 11:46 pm

how exactly will gay marriage “destroy the institution of marriage?”
you people do realize that being married in a church ain’t cutting it these days,
you have to go the the courthouse, and get a marriage license, which is in the legal system, not religion.

and, marriage is a LEGAL issue. when you get married, you get tons of benefits from the government, not a letter from God saying “Good job guys!” and how about this, if a man & wife go into a hospital, one is unable to make their own medical calls, the other person makes it for them. but if part of a gay couple go into a hosptial, their partner cannot even make decisions for them, and in some hospitals, aren’t even admitted to see them! how is that ok?

oh, and another thing, if you wanna talk about sanctity of marriage, how about all those couples who did not wait until marriage to have sex? are they sacredly upholding marriage? uh, no.

[291] Posted by: melissmarko | February 16th, 2009 at 12:03 am

To take Melissa’s argument one step further, if you’re going to whine and moan and hold up OMG THE SANCTITY OF MARRIAGE you better stop for one damn second and look at the divorce rate.

http://www.cdc.gov/nchs/data/nvsr/nvsr56/nvsr56_21.htm#T2

GO and take a look at that.

Heteros are NOT doing too well on the whole sanctity of marriage idea. There’s thousands of divorces PER STATE every year.

Not to mention the 24-hour marriages of people like Britney Spears. Her Vegas marriage, then her marriage and bust-up with Federline, and all the people you see on television and in magazines every day who are bumping uglies with anyone they come across, yea, that’s a real image-enhancer for the heterosexual observance of the sanctity of marriage.

What is it Jesus himself said? Let he who is without sin cast the first stone.

[292] Posted by: kelexyn | February 16th, 2009 at 1:47 am

@jen0522: Excuse me? All gays don’t have prestigious jobs? Hypocrites? You’re just being a complete, idiotic scumbag by stereotyping. Not all gays are dumb. Not all gays are complainers. And about the tolerance issue, how don’t gays tolerate people? Please don’t mesh every single living homosexual with the false, reformed picture of the extremely feminine gays you rarely see.

And on another note, being gay is a genetic trait. Dominant, recessive, mutation, I don’t know, but it certainly is an effect from your gene. I don’t see our country–or ANY country or person, ripping away rights from disabled and retarded people. People with chronic disease and genetic disorder, they still have their rights. So why blame the gays? Why blame these people who have altered genetics that are unlucky enough to be sought as evil and disgust?

It’s wrong you say? It’s in the Bible? Didn’t God also create each and everyone of us? Isn’t that in the Bible as well?

And for those who want even a glimpse of how a gay feels–
You see a hot girl or guy. Say you’re also the same gender as that person. It’s basically THE SAME! Just a couple different ways you want to be with them sexually, if you know what I mean, but its VERY SIMILAR.

.

[293] Posted by: quintonnnn | February 16th, 2009 at 3:46 am

being gay is not a genetic trait–it is a choice, and a bad one.
it is a sin.it is in the Bible, God says it is an abomination–it sickens him, and frankly, it sickens me.

I love all the Christian work on here, I really do… but what if the gay people you’re talking about are agnostic or even complete and utter non-believers? That just makes your opinion absolute balls to them, so you can spew hate all you like because it doesn’t matter.

Me? I’m a comfortable pansexual, Church of England attending, music and literature student, and I fully support gay rights. So does my church for that matter, because I have been brought up to believe that God forgives us for our sins. I lead a good life, and so if one day I happen to enter into a civil partnership (that’s right! England and the rest of the UK have taken a step forward and allowed for a proper ceremony for gay/lesbian people to join together, and they are given all rights that straight married couples have) I believe that I’ve also done a lot of good in my life that proves I’m not a bad person, simply one that finds the same sex attractive (pansexuality is different, if anyone is interested simply google it).

I’m also surprised at some of the atrocious spelling on here. If you’re going to gay-bash, at least do it in proper English, it makes it look like you have some form of intelligence and aren’t an ape, like our long-ago ancestors.

This is pretty much to every person trying to flame or tear down a gay person:

What gives you the right? Are you gay? Do you PERSONALLY know what it is to be so?

I am bi. Don’t know what it means, look it up. I do know what it is to be gay. I’m a person too right? As for all the “Christians” here? How many Lutheran or Methodist pastors are gay?

You have no right to bash people who are jsut like you. Guys, you like girls, right? So, why can’t girls like the sweet, sensitive, caring, shoe-shopping people too? And vice versa? Girls like the big, manly men. So why can’t guys be attracted to the people who share common interests? Isn’t that what love is?

Just because god says something isn’t right doesn’t mean it can’t be right for us. If it is what we want then it is right to us. It can be wrong to other people but that is because most of the time they are being ignorant. Some people who criticize other gay people just do it becasue most of the time they are afraid of their own sexuality. They just don’t want to be ridiculed by others because they might be gay.

Quote: “i dont think your [sic] bad people. i just dont agree with your lifestyle.”

Thanks– I, on my part, radically disagree with people whose lifestyle involves Marmite. I’m thinking of writing up a passage for Moses’ books, condemning Marmiters to death. Let me consult my priests.

Now, I understand your concerns about becoming “INSTINCT,” you illiterate monkeys, in case homosexuality is contagious and all those homos in the world sneeze on you at once. Your flawless logic must surely account also for sterile hetero couples, as well as hetero couples who make the conscious decision not to have children. I think that there is a most simple solution to the problem of “INSTINCTION”: from now on, ALL marriage contracts should legally require an additional official document, signed by both spouses and their families and pets, declaring that the couple intends to make millions of babies or be killed if they fail to do so in a span of ten years or less.

Now i just had a thought, and if people get mad, whatever, its just a blog. Now when people get mad about the discrimination against homosexuals, does that make them their identity? Does being a homosexual identify with who they are inside? because if so then that is a very sad existence. Why? having your identity, discussions, and life only revolve around being a homosexual is a very shallow life. Let me tell you guys something, I am a video gamer/nerd, now when someone makes fun of nerds or says that nerds are retarded, insignificant, unnatural, or just plain disgusting, I don’t get mad, why because my life is not based on being a nerd. So to those making judgemental comments about that being gay is normal and if you say other wise then you are just stupid. Please stop. You are being just as narrow-minded and untolerant as those that say homosexuality is wrong, not that i am saying that those who say so are narrow-minded or untolerant.

1. There are animals that mate with same-sex partners.
2. Research has shown that gay men have more estrogen than straight men and gay women have more testosterone that straight women.
3. Homosexuality has been around since ancient times. In Greece, it was the norm for a man to get married to a women purely for repopulation purposes and then have a male lover, usually a teenage boy. There are even stories of gods in ancient Greece with male lovers (i.e. Hyacinth).

[305] Posted by: dana8 | February 18th, 2009 at 1:11 am

I understand the point they are trying to make.

They want equality. Just as everyone else in the world wants equality. Yet instead of attempting to live normal lives they pull themselves out, label themselves as ‘homosexual’ and act as if they should be treated differently then the rest of the world.

I don’t care if you are homosexual, heterosexual, black, white, Christian or Atheist. You are human and no one human deserves to be treated better than another.

I’m not homophobic. I’m not against homosexuality however I don’t see how ‘day without a gay’ is going to make a lick of difference other than annoy the people out there who are already against homosexuality and pump up the ego of those for it. All in all the world remains the same.

I think that gays should have rights, though I’m with the Cathilic church on the subject. Being gay isn’t wrong. But in order to remain in the church, you can’t date or have sex with anyone of the same sex.

[307] Posted by: lordess_helena | February 18th, 2009 at 12:38 pm

I think this idea actually would make an impact. I go to a Catholic school and have my whole life and I’ve always been taught that yes this idea of men being with other men is wrong and all that crap but I’ve never believed it. One aspect of someones life doesnt take away from the great person they might be. Who the hell are we to judge whether it’s right or wrong? You’re attracted to whoever your attracted to. Even being straight has that problem where you cant help who your attracted to. And everyones always teaching that its wrong to discriminate and not like someone according to ethnicity and religion, well then why should gender or preference be any different?

[308] Posted by: raquelxfm | February 18th, 2009 at 4:54 pm

This is absurd! The part you have in a society should not depend on whether you are a homosexual or a heterosexual or bisexual. You are a person. No labels. Stick with it. Honestly, everyone is so worried about what category they fall into. Whether you are gay, straight or bi, you a part of society and you shouldn’t have a day where you can just stop what you are doing because of it.

And if you want to play the “fair” card, why not have a day to call in straight then? Or call in bi? If they want things to be fair, then that’s the way it should be. But honestly, one of the main reasons why people don’t like homosexuals is because they make a big scene out of everything. You want to be treated equal? Then act like you are equal instead of making a big deal about being gay! Fit in with the rest of us who live and breathe and don’t make a big scene just because we either like the same sex or the opposite sex!

Not to offend anyone who choses to belive in the bible, but how can YOU base YOUR opinions upon a book that was written many many centuries ago and let it decide what is right and wong for YOU? Society is ridiculous with its constant belittling of everyone and everything that is not what/ who God says it/ they should be. Honsetly Gay/Bi/Lesbians should have a day from society and their jobs whre most of them are not welcome. You people who believe that they are awful should be ashamed of yourselves! how can you hate without knowing who they are? Homosexuals do not make a big scene out of everything… that statement itself is a tad dramatic dont you think? Maybe if they didnt have assholes like some of the people writing these stupid comments they wouldnt have to have a day to themselves!!!!! UGH! you cannot just go around saying “oh well if ya dont say anything then you wont get shit for it!” BIG DUH! wake up we live in America… we hands down are the biggest hypocrites ever. Land of the Free? why did africans have to get the crap kicked out of them for being a different color for so many years before they were freed? why did women have to wait so long to be acknowledged? why do gays have to be hated because they dont love the opposite sex? LOVE is what matters! at least they can love and its people like some of you who discriminate who prove that the world will never change because its too busy being ignorant. want some advice? GROW UP! learn about different people and what they stand for, The Beatles sang this great song and it said “All We Need Is LOVE” LOVE HAS NO GENDER!!!!!!!!!!! i say heck yes to Day Without Gay!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I don’t get how you can not like some one for what they can’t help. You haven’t chosen to be gay thats just the way things worked out. And, for all those people who think being gay is a sin… isn’t god supposed to love all people? In your eyes, hasn’t he created all people? Now if he had something against gay people why would he create them? Think about that a little.

Well, hello. There are certainly a lot of interesting opinions on this page and I would really like to add mine. In my personal opinion I believe that homosexuality is not a choice. I have seen some of the ignorance and downright cruelty that has been directed at many of the gay people that I know. I personally can’t believe that anyone would willingly subject themselves to that. They are just people who happen to like people other people of the same gender. Covering that up would be like a straight person trying to cover up that they liked people of different genders. It would be a very painful thing. I also really hate how people use the bible as an argument against everything. I am a very devout Christian. I go to Sunday school every week. I sing in the choir. I pray to god during the often contested moment of silence at my school. However I don’t take everything in the bible word for word. I love what xkublaix wrote about how “in the Old Testament, they also stoned adulteresses. Now we give them TV shows.” There is a lot of random stuff in the bible about sacrificing sheep and stoning people. We don’t do that anymore. It just doesn’t apply to this era.

It also really gets my goat when people use their religion as grounds for laws and for government policies. There is a separation between church and state in this country. No one should have to submit to another person’s religion. I wouldn’t want to be forced to submit to Jewish, Wiccan, Muslim, Quaker, Pastafarian, or even Catholic beliefs. I am sure that none of them would like to be forced to be Methodist. The amazing thing about this country is that we can all believe what we want to. It needs to stay that way.

And finally I think that homosexuality is a legitimate form of love. People are so worried about “the sanctity of marriage” but the divorce rate is skyrocketing. If people really wanted to preserve any sanctity they would ban divorces. However, no one in government would ever do that because it would cause a giant fiasco.

And then back to the original topic, I think it is just fine if people want to skip work to show support for their cause. My only worry would be that not enough people would participate and so the impact would be small. But I guess every little thing counts.

Well then..
So, i’m gay but when i first read about the ‘call in gay’ event i thought it was a bit over the top.
However, after reading through the above discussions, i’ve really changed my opinion.
You know, there really are a lot of people out there who really… really just can’t stand homosexuality, mainly on the grounds of personal opinion or religious views.
And fair enough, everyone’s entitled to their own opinion, but the way in which some people have expressed it is as though they have the right to pass judgement on the world themselves.
A personal opinion is just that.. a Personal opinion. Sure, you have every right to express is, but don’t be so violent about it.
I’m not going to go into whether it’s ‘right’ or ‘wrong’ to base an argument around religious beliefs… again, personal opinions are there to be expressed. But there’s just one things that bothered me slightly as i was reading.
God loves all… except those who don’t ask him for forgiveness and try to be less gay?
I know we’re probably going to go in loops about this one forever but seriously. God loves us all… and yet he loves the sinner not the sin (which in itself is perceived as unacceptable)… so really, God only loves the sinner if he can separate himself from the sin… and that would mean he doesn’t love everyone at all. Forgive me, but that seems just a little hypocritical.
Either this or he doesn’t love gay people at all.
so i have a question (and i’m pretty sure it’s been asked a number of times before; but hey, it’s valid):
I’m gay… I’ve pretty much always known that i was attracted to girls. If that isn’t good enough and you still think that i did it as a personal choice or a stunt, then i’ll add that there a lot of gay people out there who certainly did not choose and would give anything Not to be gay. With this in consideration, if God made the world why did he make gay people if he wasn’t going to love them?
i dunno.. just curious.

This is pretty much why i changed my mind about the ‘call in gay thing’.
I’m not normally a fan of big spectacles, but sometimes it’s necessary to make a statement.
It’s been asked, if we want equality so badly, why don’t we just act like everyone else - rather than take part in events like this. The reason is, because if we were to act like everything was normal then nothing would every get done.
If an issue isn’t creating much attention then a fair amount of people tend to be quite willing to ignore it or cover it over.
I went onto the site for the Day without a Gay and you know, they actually achieved a hell of a lot of support and publicity. And they certainly wouldn’t have recieved it if they’d all gone to work and said “We want equality, so we’ll act like everyone else and hope to get noticed.’
I’m sorry.. it just doesn’t happen that way.

nontralla: you seem like a real nice person and you haven’t been angered by some banterings on this blog, which impresses me. but you did ask why did God create homosexuals if he was not going to love them, and there i do have an answer for you. But I don’t want to come across as a gay hater, i am not.

“You know I think we have forgotten a major part of this whole issue, I know i have. But isn’t our first steps in progressing is finding our own faults, our have someone else tell us?” This was from one of my earlier posts, so if there are some holes that need to be filled let me know.

Here is some further info relating to the top. When Adam was alone God had him name all of the animals to try and find a helper for Adam, but throughout all the animals he could not find any. So he knocked out Adam and then made Woman from his rib, when Adam woke up he found his helper. Now before the Fall of Man there was no sign of homosexuality as to it being created by God, you may look up Genesis 1,2,3 if you want some research. only until after the Fall did the acts of homosexuality start to spring up, as written in Genesis. Now God does love each and every person, but not the sin that they have committed. Like how if you have been spanked by your parents and they tell you that it hurts them just as much it hurts you, yet we reply that we hate, or some do, and we blame them for lots of things. That is how God views the sin in each of us, he loves us but hates the sin we do.

I know it is long but if you could read it then i hope i have made some sense.

Do you choose who you like? So what exactly makes you think that its a choice to be gay? people are so stupid. There have been studies done stating that being gay is genetic. So its basically proven that you are WRONG! I have another question, has a gay person ever bothered you? I didn’t think so. So why are you so hateful and homophobic? I think it’s completely wrong to think that God says “no gays!”, thats absurd! He wouldn’t have created gays if he hated them! Also, people are supposed to forgiven for their sins, so why does this sin send people send people straight to hell in your book?!? Why shouldn’t they get married? What if someone said you can’t marry him/her your straight! How would that feel? There are so many things insanely wrong with your argument.

I don’t see what the problem is that people have with gays. unless they’re all freakishly religious, i don’t get why people have a problem with it. They should just mind their own business. Let people live how they want to live. I’m heterosexual but i also think that Day Without a Gay is a great idea. they should have it here in Australia as well.

I am like anti-gay rights. I probably shouldn’t post this…. but whatever. What’s the big deal about the gay day thingie? I don’t think it’s necessary at all…

[319] Posted by: PinanoPlayer606 | February 19th, 2009 at 11:55 pm

First of all, I’m a Christian. By that, I mean that I believe in the teachings of Jesus and follow him, not by the teachings of some of the wackos and nuts that claim to be Christian. And for all of you people who are claiming that homosexuality is a sin, so is lying, stealing, murdering… what makes homosexuality so different? The Bible states ridiculously clearly that in God’s eyes, a sin is a sin. If someone lied sometimes, but was otherwise a great person, would you discriminate against them, say horrible things to them, laugh at them, and deny them their Constitutional rights? We need to realize that humans are humans, and that it is incredibly hypocritical to hate someone else because of something they do that you don’t approve of. Religious beliefs aside, people who aren’t megalomaniacal will admit that they screw up. Whether you call it a sin or not, and what you define that is, is your business. And ironically, you will find that the majority of major homophobes are that way because they have homosexual feelings themselves.

Thanks for answering my question, bcbwnews.
I’m always curious as to what motivates people’s opinions and after following through everything you said ( i’m pretty sure i had read your past post before, but it was interesting to read in some kind of context.) i get where you’re coming from.
We don’t have to agree but that’s cool.
You really answered my question, which was helpful.
Especially “like how if you have been spanked by your parents and they tell you that it hurts them just as much it hurts you.”

I go to a Catholic school actually, so i’m generally fairly familiar with references made, but the general attitude of my school community is from.. i suppose a more ‘inclusive’ perspective. I mean, we have a gay teacher etc. And because i’m constantly surrounded by this, i suppose i take it for granted occasionally and that’s why i needed some clarification on where the above argument was coming from.
so thanks.

Since homosexuals are aiming at gaining the equal rights and respect of heterosexuals, is there going to be a day where all heteros call in straight? I am completely supportive of gay rights, but I think this day is going to cause more religious people that believe a marraige should be strictly between a man and a woman to single out the gay community and bash them even more so than they already have been. I will never understand how a person that believes in a God, who infact created everyone equally, can think any less of a human created with the same amount of dignity as themselves. Frankly, that is the largest amount of BS I have ever heard.

Its the 21st century, this is a free country, and if you believe in God, you probably also believe “only God can judge you”…last time I checked God is described in scripture as a forgiving God, that loves everyone equally.
I am not a religious person(but very educated about religions) and am very involved in gay rights, so someone that has opposing views- feel free to argue.

God says homosexuality is wrong. You shouldn’t take advantage of God creating you by being homosexual. Adam and Eve, they were a boy and a girl. God didn’t make a boy and then a boy! The first humans showed that heterosexuality is the way to live your life. Being married to the same sex is ridiculous. Even though God is forgiving, you should be expected to do what is right. Homosexuality is sin. You can ask for forgivness, but God wants you to end your homosexual relationship.

I think they just made this day to get rid of the gays for a day hahaha

but meh, thats just me eh? I just think Americans are racist and anti-gay (obviously).

Who cares if your gay anyway? Just cover up your arse when you feel a bit breached and if they’re a good person whats the difference? nothing! I’ve got one gay friend (there ain’t too many that I know in the first place) and he’s a genuinly good guy, just don’t be judgemental.

i don’t like how it says “call in gay”
if sick people take sick days to recover from their sicknesses
don’t gay people take gay days to recover from their gayness?

If your gay…kill yourself. Any man who enjoys another man’s “white stuff” all over his face should be caged for the rest of his life. If i were to have a gay son…he wouldnt live too long. Not sure why…he probable would just for some RANDOM reason die by a accident a few days after he confessed to being gay.

Notice how pretty much all the people who are hateful towards homosexuals type like they’re in the second grade…or are utter morons?
I think that’s more than just coincidence.
God, people are so stupid.
Why do people like you exist? I mean, I don’t think you should die, because that’s an awful thing to want, and I’m not an awful person; unlike those of you who say that I should “kill myself” just because of my sexual preference. I’m just wondering…why live with so much ignorant, needless hate?
Towards LOVE; love between millions of couples, love that is just like any heterosexual love.
Do you realize how much easier and less stressful your life would be if you just let go of your idiotic prejudices and let people live and love the way they want?
It’s ridiculous.
But hey, if that’s how you want to waste your life, you deserve it.
Whaaatever.
I’m going to go talk to my GIRLFRIEND now, and be happy and gay and in love. You all can stay angry and frustrated at other people’s sex lives.

No, homosexuality is not a sin, and anyone who says it is clearly wasn’t hugged enough as a child.

Personally, I’m straight. However, I find it blatantly offensive when people quote the bible to suit themselves, trying to accuse Gay people of being “sinners”.

The idea is nice, but execution of the plan is bad. its one of those things that looks great on paper, but not in real life. anyway to all of those who bring religion into the mix, which cause WAY more problems than needed, do you really believe that two male partners who got to church, believe in god, are praying every day and have Jesus in their hearts, are still going to hell, when a drug dealer turns towards the light after a life of sin gets a better chance of entering heaven. I have read many passages in the bible, and it seems to me that this hypocritical situation is stupid. Oh and if really have a problem with gay couples….GUESS WHAT…..YOU DON”T HAVE TO INTERFERE!!!!! JUST IGNORE THEM OR DON”T INTERACT WITH THEM!!!!
How hard is that?

Gay or straight, Christian or Atheist, you people need to learn how to spell. You make yourselves look like blubbering idiots and whichever group/category/sect you represent, you make them look bad.

Learn how to have a civilized discussion. Arguing will Never change anyone’s mind. It’s through strategic discussion and careful understanding of the opponent’s viewpoints that gets you places.

[340] Posted by: DandyDanger | February 23rd, 2009 at 9:18 pm

I’ll be brief.

I am a heterosexual Roman Catholic. That being said, I believe that gay people deserve all of the rights of their straight counterparts. I believe that if God made people a certain way, he didn’t do it out of spite, he did it out of love, and he wouldn’t have them be any other way. Wasn’t Jesus’s message really for us to love one another? I think that this should hold true regardless of our neighbor’s sexual preference. All over the world, countless treaties, books and constitutions state a universal idea: “All men are created equal.” How can we have faith in a government that claims to uphold this motto, and yet denies marriage to gay couples? I’m not an anarchist, and I don’t mean to insult anyone, or change anyone’s opinions, but I do feel that in order for this to be the America that we have claimed it to be for the past two hundred years, some changes need to be made.
The Bible may say that homosexuality is a sin, but doesn’t the Bible also tell us to keep kosher? We have abandoned that practice as Christians because we have outgrown the need for it. I read the Bible often and keep a copy by my bedside at all times, but I don’t believe that everything in the Bible is meant to be taken literally. But even if you consider homosexuality a sin, if America is a democracy, people should be able to sin if they so choose. Not a sin that will hurt other people of course, like murder or rape, but a sin involving one’s own lifestyle, such as keeping Kosher, or being gay. Our ancestors left Britain to escape opression from an unaccepting majority and established America as a shelter for all people from tyranny and supression. If we are to uphold the image America has projected, we must extend the right of marriage to gay couples.
The United States Constitution clearly states that there should be a separation of church and state. Clearly, though, there is still a connection between the two in this nation, as homosexual marriage is not permitted. I’m not saying that every church in the world has to open their doors to each gay couple that comes their way, but I do think that the government at least should recognise gay marriages. If a church decides that homosexuality is immoral, that is there choice, but the government should not be allowed to discriminate based on sexuality the right of marriage.
Whom does gay marriage hurt? No one. There isn’t a single argument except for morality that I know of why gay people should not be wed. The thing that amazes me is the hate for gays that is so dreadfully common in the world today. God teaches us to love, not hate, so even if gays are ’sinners’, shouldn’t we treat them with love regardless of what they do? I fail to see the logic behind gay hate, and maybe that’s because there is none, but I’ve grown up around gay people all of my life, so maybe that’s why I can’t see the other side of this debate. In fact, my best friend is a lesbian, and she goes to church with me every Sunday. This is because she knows that God will accept her for who she is.
In parting, for all of you out there who disagree with me, I am perfectly content to engage in a civilised debate with you, provided our comments do not degenerate into a contest of who can call the other the meanest name. For those out there who do not understand gay love, know this: gay people are no different than straight people, and a gay wedding is as meaningful and as beautiful as a straight wedding, and if you don’t believe me, then leave what you don’t understand alone.
Peace.

I’m gay and put up with alot of harassment. What needs to happen is that people need to stop being so damn ignorant about it and maybe gays wouldn’t make such a big deal about things. Okay, god says it is wrong, big deal. It is a choice we make and if anyone has a problem with it they can shove it. But yet in the bible, god loves everyone. plain and simple.

[346] Posted by: courtneyyyx09 | February 24th, 2009 at 4:03 pm

If there is any type of heaven or god then all people go to heaven, including gays. since, according to the bible, none of us are the same, then we all have our own personal ideas of heaven and that means we have our own heaven. In my opinion heaven is a state of mind and it is just awful that somebody could discriminate against another human being because of their sexual orientation. It goes both ways - straight against gay, gay against straight. With all the issues in the world today it is essential that people can live together and accept each other. I have been reading other articles on sparknotes but this has got to be the most offensive. I am not opposed to the idea of day without a gay, because i really dont know what it would be like and it wouldnt make that much of a difference to me. It is the comments that are offensive. AND I’M NOT EVEN GAY!!!!! how could some people be so mean.

[347] Posted by: erinisawsome | February 24th, 2009 at 4:34 pm

In reality, people are going to be offensive and speak their mind, even when they should just keep it to themselves. To courtney and any like her, you have no idea what a gay person goes through every day. I don’t either, but my 3 best friends who are gay do, and they tell me enough to get mad just thinking about it. oppression will be in our lives forever, whether it’s over Homosexuals or religion. What makes us human, and adults, is how we handle it, so let’s be happy that these problems are being brought to congress continually, and hopefully someday there won’t be any discrimination over sexual orientation.

[348] Posted by: wildwaynesworld | February 24th, 2009 at 5:34 pm

There will always be discrimination because that is how they were raised. Someone some where will always think that it isn’t right and still discriminate. My friend was gay and my school forced her to tell them she was gay. Shortly after that we got a GSA. But she had to fight for it and go to court. They wanted me to go to counseling last year for being gay. You can never really get rid of the discrimination.

[349] Posted by: QBear101 | February 24th, 2009 at 5:44 pm

This is stupid we should not even fight over this we are all people and because of discrimination like this is why the world is so bad. I am not gay but I think everyone should have the same rights.I am not saying that gay is right or wrong because I can not saying that I do not have the power. If you think it is right or wrong its what you think and we are all entitled to whatever we think but when you do not like someone just because they are gay or even a different race is just dumb. If you do not like it dont do it but dont judge. Me saying this isnt going to change anything but mabye someone will understand just mabye. Oh and for those who say it goes against religion not even you are sinless but because someone is gay you feel above them thats just wrong.

Everyone here using biblical and scientific references should get them correct on the spot not almost there. Also, why would anyone call in gay, not only is it a very demeaning thing to do for society now and also although it is cliche, what happened to the militarian idea of don’t ask don’t tell.

Actually, the purpose is to encourage legal protection of homosexuals in the workplace. In several states, there are no laws protecting homosexuals from losing their jobs on the basis of their sexual orientation. This means that they could be fired just for being LGBT. The Day Without a Gay is basically advocating laws that protect homosexual individuals from being fired just being gay.

I agree with smiles, yet, yeah, I think you should type normally? Isn’t it harder to type that way? o.o

We should love each other for who we are and not judge! If you are a Christian, it is not your job.

in ancient times like Rome and Greece when the major religions that we know today were being formed and starting to mix together and there was constant fighting over what religion people should be, the religion that was dominantly being spread was christianity (today their christianity would be our catholicism, our christianity isn’t as strict anymore) but it was still the same bible we would read today and you know what, these ancient Romans and other christian dominant places would have huge gatherings were everyone participated in one huge friggin orgy, and geuss what… there was “gay activity” going on all over the place.
my point in giving you this history lesson was that these people that lived their lives COMPLETELY BY THE BIBLE ALMOST ALL OF THESE PEOPLE PARTICIPATED IN GAY SEX!!! it was normal to have sex with people of the same sex…and my bet, God did not condemn them because do you honestly believe that God would care who sticks what in where? and this is totally cliche, but so true… does it matter, as long as everyone is happy?
and for all those anti-gays out there… why the hell do you care? its not like it effects you one bit so get over it.. its a dumb prejudice.

penguinboy i don’t always type like that…just when im really really bored or sometimes i just like to play around with the words ya know…l0l…

and i agree with jen when she said it doesnt effect anti-gays…because it doesn’t…some people are just stupid. i think most gay people are freakin k00!

[358] Posted by: smiles1128 | February 25th, 2009 at 6:05 pm

I am heterosexual, but I know a lot of gay and bisexual people and I don’t see why people can’t just treat them like normal people. Why does who they love and want to be with suddenly everyone’s business? I think everyone needs to just let them live their lives and stop trying to make their’s miserable. I think it’s great that they are taking a stand. And on the marriage thing, I believe they have everyright to marry anyone they want. At least they love eachother. Who are we to define their love? I don’t think anyone would like it if someone said each race has to marry the same race or obese people have to marry obese people or anything like that. We don’t have the right to decide who you can and can not love and spend the rest of your life with. While heterosexuals enjoy being with the one they love and enjoy the benfits of being married gay people can’t because we have a bunch of ignorant people who need to get a life. Let them be happy to, you’re not the only one who deserves a happily ever after.

smiles, your stupid way of typing isn’t pissing me off. i just think it makes you seem unintelligent, which i’m betting you are.

To courtneyyyx09…

Who are you to sit there and say who belongs and doesn’t? You’re so ignorant, whether or not someone is gay shouldn’t determine whether or not they belong anywhere. It’s people like you that make things like the halocaust happen. Just because you don’t like someone doesn’t mean they don’t belong. If that was the case then there would be a lot of different types of people extinct from this world. How would you like it if you had a child and they turned out to be gay. Are you gonna tell them they don’t belong? Don’t be such a bitch.

[361] Posted by: chenicp7 | February 25th, 2009 at 7:07 pm

Everyone with common sense just stop commenting about courtneyyyx09 she or he (you never really know) is just a ignorant and will never learn. That is just the kind of ignorance that you thought was only in movies that person (not to sure about that one) is just the way they are and are the reason for racism, sexism, anti-semitism, and um i dont know the exact word for anti-gay

“You shall not lie with a male as with a woman; it is an abomination.” - Leviticus 18:22
honestly, in my mind, the bible is very explicit in its bashing of homosexuality.
but the bible does say to treat others equally.

those are two completely contradictory stances. I do not understand how you can have both of these statements in the bible. But, neither do I care. I am not homosexual. I am not Christian. I do not approve of homosexuality. I think homosexuality is disgusting. But I do not condemn them for their chemical imbalance or whatever the gay rights’ activists are calling it these days. I am not discriminatory towards homosexuals. I am 100% ecstatic that I myself am not homosexual.

Maybe the bible wants its followers to treat homosexuals as equals and give them rights, but also not be a part of the homosexual movement.

chenicp7, if i had a kid that turned out to be gay i would kick them out of my house.
i would not tolerate such disgusting behavior.

[364] Posted by: courtneyyyx09 | February 25th, 2009 at 8:29 pm

and wereslop, you’re the ignorant one for having terrible grammar. it’s not “a ignorant” it’s “an ignorant”. if you’re going to comment about me being ignorant try not to sound so goddamn ignorant yourself.

[365] Posted by: courtneyyyx09 | February 25th, 2009 at 8:32 pm
