Mirror’s Edge Gets Running Right   Nov 24, 2008

I’m way too lazy to do parkour. That being said, it’s never really been a huge problem for me. I mean, I guess it would be cool to jump around on a fire escape and stuff, but like I said . . . lazy. But don’t fret, me! My (non)problem has been solved! In video game form, at that! That game? Mirror’s Edge.

Mirror’s Edge (for the Xbox 360 and Playstation 3) puts you in the well-used shoes of Faith, an information courier (or Runner) in a world where all citizens are monitored by a totalitarian government. That’s pretty much all you’ll get when you hit the ground running. And running is definitely the name of the game.

As Faith, you’ll run up walls, jump around on the aforementioned fire escapes, leap from buildings to helicopters, and basically do the craziest parkour stuff you can imagine. It’s a lot of fun and works very smoothly, but plan on dying a lot. You will fall off of all the things I just mentioned as well. You might get shot a few times, too, but the gunplay and fighting is a relatively small part of the Mirror’s Edge experience. This a parkour game, after all.

The story of the game, revolving around the wrongful arrest of Faith’s sister Kate, tends to fall a little flat. It’s not bad, it’s just a lot less interesting than actually playing the game. That’s not much of a concern, though, because when this game is good, it’s really good and it’s unlike any other game around.
