Dress Like a Star: Celebrity Fashion Lines   Jul 9, 2008

These days, it seems that if you don’t have a current top ten movie, a song on the Billboard Top 100, and a clothing line or two, you are nobody. What started out as a unique idea is now a must for celebrities, both male and female. From J.Lo to SJP, from Diddy to Eminem, it’s almost impossible to buy clothing that’s not celebrity-designed or endorsed. But are these lines worth the price?

As a long-time No Doubt fan and admirer of Gwen Stefani’s outgoing and exciting style, I perked up when she launched L.A.M.B. (or Love, Angel, Music, Baby) in 2003. While her models often layer on the vests, sweaters, and skirts, each item can be incorporated seperately into your current wardrobe to add a little flair and designer edge. One item at a time is probably the best way to go, anyway, seeing as Stefani’s Sleeveless Babydoll Sweater comes in at $265, and her Houndstooth Fade Tee (shown) rings up at $55. But, if you want a little of Stefani’s signature look in your own wardrobe, L.A.M.B. is the way to go for wearable punk.

Years before L.A.M.B. hit the market, Sean “Diddy” Combs, formerly known as “Puff Daddy” and a million other names, launched his clothing line, Sean Jean. Consisting of zip-up hoodies, jeans, and t-shirts, the clothes are relaxed, comfortable, and rather indistinguishable from other similar products (except for the “Sean Jean” name on them). Still, if you want to feel like you’re emulating the man himself, and brand is important to you, $70 for a jacket (shown) isn’t too bad.

New mom Jennifer Lopez is another singer/actress/dancer who has decided that the world needs to be able to purchase her personal style, and in multiple clothing lines, at that! She’s got J.Lo and justsweet, along with several fragrances. The great thing is that her stuff is up-to-date, cute, recognizable as being J.Lo-inspired, and priced about the same as something you’d find at Express. Summer tees and tanks range from $40–$70 and come in a range of styles.

And then you have the tween-queens themselves, Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen, who have been pitching clothing (and everything else under the sun) for as long as they can probably remember. It started out as clothes for pre-teens, but as they have aged they have sprouted new lines for older girls. And the thing is, I can actually picture them sitting down and drawing sketches, unlike some other celebrity “designers.” While their own personal style leaves much to be desired (think hobo-chic), their many clothing lines, at the ever-affordable Wal-Mart, are full of adorable items for girls. It may not be the high-end stuff that L.A.M.B. produces, but it sure as heck is a lot cheaper!

And this list hardly touches the surface of the pool of celebrity designers. Kanye West, Jessica Alba, Hillary Duff, Kelly Osbourne, Paula Abdul, and Nelly have also been extending their talents to clothing design. And, of course, how could I forget the fashion maven herself—Sarah Jessica Parker? So peruse the web to see which celebrity you want to grow up to be like, and whose clothes you can afford, and get shopping! Next, of course, you’ll have to cut an album and star in a movie, but you can start out easily enough just by dressing like the stars.

Does a celebrity-designed line mean the clothes are better? What do you prefer?
