A Lost Cause: Dead Before His Time, Literally  Mar 20, 2008

My immediate reaction to the latest episode of Lost was mass confusion. How could it not be? One crazy event unfolded after another, providing a whole series of new questions and mysteries. Flashbacks? Flash forwards? Suicide? Kevin Johnson?

Let’s break it down and provide a little clarity.

Skipping over The Facts, I will attend to The Frenzy, overabundant as it is.

First, there is Regina, who we can only assume is a crew member on the ship. She is reading The Survivor of the Chancellor, a Jules Verne novel about a sailing vessel’s final voyage and the death of many of those on board, upside down. This error seems innocent enough, but we understand there is more to this seemingly innocent incident when she commits suicide by jumping off the boat with a chain wrapped around her the next morning. The obvious question regards her motive, but the real mystery is why no one on the boat besides Desmond and Sayid attempted to stop her, save her, or react to the event.

I would speculate, but instead I will focus on this next doozey: What on earth is going on with Sun and Jin?! Let’s backtrack. Back on the island, Juliet informs Sun that there are approximately three weeks until both she and the baby die. In the world of flash forwards, we see Sun giving birth to a girl, and naming her Ji Yeon, the name Jin suggested while still on the island. Simultaneously, we see Jin scrambling to buy a specific doll and rushing to a hospital for the birth of… a Chinese ambassador’s grandson. Eventually we realize this is a flashback and occurred years before Sun had her child. We would more easily accept this storyline had we not seen Sun, accompanied by Hurley, visiting Jin’s grave post-delivery, crying over his death. It should be noted that the date on Jin’s tombstone is September 22, 2004, the date of the crash. So the obvious questions are: A) WHAT?! Jin is dead? How could that be? B) Does this mean Sun gets off the island within the next three weeks? C) What was Hurley doing there? D) Does Jin count as a member of the Oceanic Six?

Ponder that while I share the story of Michael, or rather, Kevin Johnson. After a door was left open allowing Sayid and Desmond’s escape a day prior, Frank, the helicopter pilot, realizes the two had a friend on the ship, and Sayid informs Desmond that Ben has someone on the ship as well. Whoever this person is slipped the pair a note warning them not to trust the captain. Later in the episode we meet a crew member, Kevin Johnson, who turns out to be Michael. Desmond never met Michael and does not realize the magnitude of the moment, but Sayid plays along figuring Michael has been the one helping. It is unclear why Michael is on the boat. Is he working for Ben? Perhaps. It is likely this has something to do with Walt.

Clearly, this episode is packed with a lot of mysteries, but my final question is a loaded one: Is it just me or is Jin’s English too good all of a sudden? I mean, just a few weeks ago the man spoke about fifteen words, and suddenly he is fluent. Is that not crazy? Fluent! Is it just me?

Share your theories.

You have asked all the same questions as I had.
I don’t think Jin is part of the Oceanic 6… he didn’t make it back ‘alive’ or whatever happens to everyone else. And since time on the show is going by slowly it’s plausible that Sun gets off within the next three weeks. And yes, Jin’s english does seem better….
I think the Oceanic 6 are Kate, Jack, Hurley, Sun, Sayid and not sure… but we know Aaron is also off the island, does he count??

You’re right on the 1st five and yes I believe Aaron does count.
That was the big deal near the end of one of those episodes, that she was now Aarons mother. I had to rewind through the whole episode to see if that was the same name as…. ahhh so tired brain fried… Australian girls son.
But maybe they’ll throw a loop at us and she just named her son Aaron, but I don’t think so since they announced they were revealing each survivor before the episode aired.
I figured either Sawyer or Locke for one of the Oceanic 6. I think there’s an all out war coming near the end now.
How bout this? Who the hell was in the coffin?! Michael aka KJ maybe, since the wake seemed to be in a run down neighborhood like the one Michael seemed to be frequenting at the end of the last episode?
SO MANY DAMN QUESTIONS !!!!

The name was Claire. And I don\’t think it was Michael in that cofin. I think it was Jin. I mean, he was dead in that last scene. He might be in there, even though he was buried in China.

Yeah Claire my brain was fried the other night thanks.
But why would no one show up for Jins funeral that makes no sense at all. Michaels the traitor, so it would be understandable if no one showed up. If it was Jin in the coffin, at least Sun and Hurley woulda showed up since they went to his grave in the other episode, but there was no one there but Jack in the other episode.

I don’t know why they wouldn’t show up. They also haven’t said that Michael is one of the Oceanic 6. That is just my theory.

If you don’t remember, they had the writers’ strike for a while. Well, if you don’t remember, they started filming the last few episodes as soon as the strike ended. They have probably just finished up on the final episode and are finishing the editing process.
