Home Video Rundown: Stardust  Mar 12, 2008

Stardust is like a small handful of candy—sweet and tasty, but not nearly enough to keep you satisfied for long. Although the film’s intentions are good, it, as a whole, seems just short of being a complete success. The characters are charming and the sets are fantastic, but the overall feeling of the film is that of an overstuffed fairy tale with barely enough room for its happy ending. That aside, Stardust does accomplish its goal, to tell the epic love tale between a lost prince and a fallen star, as well as the story of the characters they meet and fend off along the way.

The two star-crossed lovers are Tristan, played by Charlie Cox, and the fallen star Yvaine, played by Claire Danes. For the most part the film is fun to watch, especially for the standout performances given by the cast. The two most enjoyable performances in the film, however, are actually given by Michelle Pfeiffer playing the deliciously evil old witch hunting for the fallen star and Robert De Niro playing a gay captain named Shakespeare. The film does have its moments, where all the elements of fantasy and parody line up, but the film, for the most part, has trouble balancing the two. All in all, Stardust is not the new Princess Bride or a live-action Shrek, but the film does succeed most of the time and is sweet enough to be truly worth the time to watch.

Stardust is directed by Matthew Vaughn and written by Matthew Vaughn and Jane Goldman. The film is rated PG-13 for some fantasy violence.

Yes it´s really sweet :)
The story is actually a Neil Gaiman book, the same author of Sandman!

It’s amazing. Most people miss the point that it also contrasts actual with just wanting someone.
