All around, Waitress is a smart comedy that proves you don’t need big explosions or expensive special effects to be entertained by a movie, just a good story to tell. Keri Russell makes Jenna, the title character, believable and easy to relate to, even if you’re not a knocked up twenty-something year old woman. In fact, Russell portrays Jenna as a talented and intelligent individual who struggles to believe in herself, and really, who can’t relate to that.
The movie’s plot consists of pie-maker Jenna who finds out early on in the movie that she is pregnant. After finding out the big news Jenna is neither really happy nor really sad. In fact, Jenna really only sees her newfound pregnancy as another reason she cannot leave her demanding, jerk husband Earl, played wonderfully by Jeremy Sisto. The only thing that was keeping her going is her dream of winning a pie baking contest and using her prize money to runaway from him. As Jenna jumps quickly back into reality, however, she begins going to see her new doctor. This is where the plot begins to thicken, and the quirky little story gets a juicy little spin. Jenna begins an affair with her awkward and clumsy, but equally charming, OB-GYN, played by the delightful Nathan Fillion. The rest of the movie follows both Jenna’s relationships with her husband and with her doctor/lover, as well as the one she begins to form with the little critter growing in her belly. The movie is able to show the growth of its main character without becoming preachy or stuffy. In fact, although the plot becomes increasingly more complicated throughout the film it never loses the charm that it began with.
Waitress could be written off as simply another “chick-flick,” but in reality is enjoyable for all sorts of different people to watch, and much more than just another Lifetime movie splattered onto the big screen. The film has a solid message, one of a parent’s love for his/her child, and is able to drive home its point without losing any of the funny or allure. All in all, Waitress is a good, heart warming tale and definitely worth your time.
My Rating: 3 out of 4 stars

I thought that Waitress was a funny, witty, and interesting movie. I watch it all the time and love the dialogue in it. Keri Russell makes the movie both touching and funny. I love it.
[1] Posted by: MissDonJuan | December 16th, 2007 at 5:44 pmI saw the movie with some friends a while ago and thought it was ok. I still thought it had a nice message but don’t think it’s that funny. Overall its a nice film to see.
[2] Posted by: pickymicky12 | December 16th, 2007 at 8:00 pmActually, this movie was horrible, cliche, and almost unbearable to sit through.
[3] Posted by: nikkiesamson | December 20th, 2007 at 9:43 pmYet, I did. And it wasn’t funny.
I have to disagree. I thought that this movie was really good. It wasn’t laugh out loud, slap-stick humor. Rather a witty film about women, pregnancy, and the decisions they end up making. I thought Waitress was a good movie to watch.

[8] Posted by: RoselessThorn04 | January 19th, 2008 at 9:11 pmAlthough some bits were predictable (like the Blonde waitress sleeping with Cal),
the movie was refreshingly funny, especially Jenna’s interactions with Jim. (But I love Nathan Fillion from Firefly, so I might be biased.)
Waitress is one of those really sweet movies that you can watch and don’t feel so embaressed about. I love that I love it and thought it was really really good.
