Home Video Rundown: Hairspray  Nov 30, 2007

From beginning to end Hairspray is a heartfelt, fast-paced good time. Even from the very start, the film gets things rolling with a burst of song and dance and never lets up. The film’s star, newcomer Nicole Blonsky, is able to helm the picture filled with a lot of big hair and even bigger names including: John Travolta, Michelle Pfeiffer, Queen Latifah, Amanda Bynes, Christopher Walken, James Marsden, and Zac Efron. Though full of big stars, the movie never feels over-stuffed or as though is has too much going on. Instead, Hairspray, feels fun and happy, something rarely found amid all the action-packed summer blockbusters and more serious dramas at the box office today. Read more…

Whatever happened to the oldie movies?  Nov 29, 2007

Feeling like there are no good movies to see anymore? Well, look no further. Pop in a movie that hasn’t come out in the past twenty years. Yes, I’m talking about those old movies that you see your grandparents talking about as they go on about the “good old days.” Instead of rolling your eyes and forcefully swallowing down that so called “meatloaf” your grandmother makes, take what they say and check it out. I’m telling you-you’ll be surprised. Okay, so you tried one and it was remarkably boring. Try a classic, I recommend an Alfred Hitchcock. Next time you are at a video rental store, look for that section in the back corner that is crawling with dust, the oldies.

Six-Dollar Mix: November Singles Mix-er  Nov 20, 2007

The season of the blockbuster is upon us, and not just at your local googolplex. No, in November not only do we get the bounty of Thanksgiving—yum, pumpkin pie!—but also a bounty of big releases guaranteed, with Christmas just around the corner, to get you in the giving mood. That means that we’re deluged with best-of compilations—both essential (Led Zeppelin’s Mothership, which finally joins the entire Zeppelin catalog online at iTunes) and excessive (the Goo Goo Dolls have enough hits to necessitate a collection?). It also means that the release slate is as crowded with best-selling artists as your Thanksgiving table is with carbohydrates. So, in the spirit of the season, I thought I’d take a break from hyping my favorite new indie finds—though really, be sure to check out White Williams’ recent Tigerbeat6 debut, it’s like Brian Eno-produced T.Rex songs—and instead I stuffed this month’s mix full of pop goodies. Your iPod with be bursting at the seams with superstar singles, just like your pants after a turkey dinner. Now, pass that pie! Read more…

Shades of Grey: Gentlemen’s Evening  Nov 6, 2007

There’s really nothing like watching a television show redeem itself from a hole it’s gotten into. Shows like Lost and Desperate Housewives have all experienced this sophomore slump, where storylines are taken just a tad too far and characters don’t seem believable anymore. We’re left unsatisfied, confused with the direction the writers are taking, and, as fans who have stuck with these shows since the beginning, all we can do is look back on happier times when the shows actually served their purpose: to entertain and keep us interested.
