Rendition opened to poor box office performance and mixed reviews, which surprised me, given the top-notch cast (Jake Gyllenhaal, Reese Witherspoon, Peter Sarsgaard, and of course, Meryl Streep) and timely, compelling subject matter (forced interrogation, or torture, depending on your politics). I needed to see for myself. Was it just a badly timed release, or were there really problems with the movie?
Some people are summer people; others prefer the spring or live for winter’s first snowflake. Not me. I’m an autumn fan through and through. What’s not to love? It’s the season of crisp air, yummy sweaters and all the best holidays (hello, Halloween and Thanksgiving?!). It also coincides with a cornucopia of amazing new music. So, now that the weather has finally cooled down, my iPod playlists are heating up.

What do you think about Britney Spears making a comeback? Many people think she should not be back in the music business right now, instead at home worrying about her children. Personally, I think it is okay for Britney to make a comeback, but I think instead of writing a song talking about “Gimme More” she should be writing songs about how she really feels. She may act like everything peachy keen with all her wild nights of clubbing, but we know that after someone gets divorced, after all the drinking and partying, there comes a time when you hit rock bottom. Britney hasn’t hit it yet, but when she does, she is going to start to realize that she needs to get her act together before it’s to late. Right now she can only have her children once a week, and she has to do many drug and alcohol tests. For me to be able to keep my children one day out of the week would be heartbreaking. In time Britney Spears will start doing the right thing. We just need to give her time.

With all that back-to-school shopping you did for notebooks, pens, sweaters and sneakers, you probably overlooked stocking up on a new soundtrack for your new school year. Lucky for you, then, that now that fall is officially here, there is quite a harvest of exciting new music to choose from. And don’t worry, there’s something out there for everyone. Rock fans will be thrilled by the classic, epic sound of the new Foo Fighters, folk fans will be pleasantly surprised by the muscle on the new Devendra Banhart, pop fans should be overwhelmed by the electro-R&B on the third solo album by Black Eyed Pea will.i.am, and hip-hop fans already got swept up in the clash of the year between 50 Cent and Kanye West. (’Ye won with bigger sales and, frankly, the better album, but 50 made a valiant showing. Here’s hoping he doesn’t retire like he was threatening to.) So many thrilling albums were released this past month that I had a really hard time narrowing this list down to just six necessary songs. So get out there and explore for yourself. The following tracks are just the awesome-sounding tip of the iceberg.
