SparkRead: The Passion of Alice by Stephanie Grant  Aug 30, 2007

The Passion of Alice by Stephanie Grant

Amidst the plethora of angsty, depressing books on mental disorders and troubled adolescents that fill the shelves of any bookstore today, The Passion of Alice by Stephanie Grant (Bantam) stands out from the rest.

I found this book to be an interesting take on anorexia and other eating disorders. Its focus isn’t so much on the actual disorders—it dwells mainly on the thought processes that Alice Forrester, an anorexia patient goes through as she recovers: socially and mentally. That’s just as well, since after all, anorexia is, at its roots, a psychological disease. Read more…

New Album Blacklight Shines  Aug 27, 2007

Generally speaking, an alternative rock band that has already established its style gets a bad rap when it tries to broaden its musical horizons. Much worse is it when that band decides to make the bold crossing into the mainstream, catering their music to a broader audience and understanding that, sometimes, music may be a matter of practicality. It doesn’t hurt that the movie was co-written by Judd Apatow, the comedy auteur who has charmed audiences by infusing his sweet coming of age stories with gross-out gags to great success in The 40 Year Old Virgin and Knocked Up. Sounds like a guaranteed hit – but does it work?

Six-Dollar Mix: August Singles Mix-er  Aug 20, 2007

These dog days of summer are notorious for their usually thin slate of releases. Is it because August is the month that all the music moguls are off vacationing on their yachts or is it just because the industry is lying in wait for all the big fall releases? Who knows? But before all those autumn records hit shelves—and this year we’ve got PJ Harvey, Jimmy Eat World, Alicia Keys, Bruce Springsteen And The E Street Band and much, much more coming up—why not spend your last month of vacation cooling down from the blistering summer temperatures with the following tunes? After all, if those back-to-school commercials are any indication, it’ll be over before you know it.
