To absolutely nobody’s surprise, Pirates of the Caribbean was released over Memorial Day weekend to blockbuster ticket sales. The movie followed in the footsteps of a widely praised first installment and a sequel savaged by critics and fans alike, though the box office receipts belied the backlash. No one else in the whole club witnesses the murder. Few losses to the music community have been as deeply felt as Elliott Smith’s. His (currently unsolved) death in 2003 robbed the world of one of the most unique voices in popular music right in the prime of his career. The fact that his posthumous output is beginning to rival that of Tupac’s is a testament to not only the wealth of material he left behind, but also to the appetite of the public, who were obviously left wanting more from this soulful songwriter.
