The Wife of Bath enjoys sex

There is a common misconception that goes all the way back to olden times and persists, against all odds, even today: that sexy fun is purely for the menfolk.

In Geoffrey Chaucer’s The Canterbury Tales, The Wife of Bath has the unmitigated gall to be a woman in the Middle Ages who enjoys sex. She also has the unmitigated gall to be TELLING EVERYONE that she enjoys sex, like some kind of evil sex witch. As we all know, it’s a slippery slope. One minute you’re enjoying sex, the next you’re literally drinking the blood of the innocent and dancing with the devil in the pale moonlight.
