QUIZ: Is This a Hozier Lyric or a Quote from Dracula?

QUIZ: Is This a Hozier Lyric or a Quote from Dracula?

Universal Pictures

Let’s have a moment of silence for September so that we may usher in the chilly, charmingly eldritch spook month of October.

Now, we all know why we’re here. I’m going to skip right past the part where I pretend Bram Stoker and Hozier are two very different people with very different writing styles, because I’m not interested in lying to you. Both are Irish; both have a certain fondness for the spiritual macabre; both served as the personal assistant to Sir Henry Irving in the late 1800s. (Hozier is, as I’m sure you’re aware, immortal, so it’s possible. Anyway, we can’t prove that he didn’t do it.)

Think you can tell them apart? Good luck.

1. "It is a strange world, a sad world, a world full of miseries, and woes, and troubles."

2. "There is one lover worthy of her with as many souls claimed as she."

3. "The blood is rare and sweet as cherry wine."

4. "I have never known peace like the damp grass that yields to me. I have never known hunger like these insects that feast on me."

5. "Despair has its own calms."

6. "Don't give it a hand—offer it a soul."

7. "Loneliness will sit over our roofs with brooding wings."

8. "An awful noise filled the air. I heard a scream in the woods somewhere."

9. "Feeling more human and hooked on her flesh, I lay my heart down with the rest at her feet."

10. "I am longing to be with you, and by the sea, where we can talk together freely and build our castles in the air."

11. "Know what it is to grow beneath her sky—her punishing cold—to slowly learn of her ancient misery."

12. "Blood is too precious a thing in these days of dishonourable peace."
