7 of the Most Disappointing Endings in Literature

The Harry Potter series by J.K. Rowling

Do people have feelings and thoughts about the Harry Potter epilogue? Boy, do they. There are basically two schools of thought on the subject: either you hated the epilogue, as many people did, or you didn’t mind the epilogue, in which case you have a garbage heart and deserve to die as surely as Dobby did not. There is no in between.

Personally, I was okay with the epilogue. That said, I can understand why people dislike it. It’s an abrupt shift in tone from the rest of the novel, a sugary product of wish fulfillment that leaves little to the literary imagination. "Everyone winds up happy and married" is cheesy, kind of boring, and a total canon roadblock. Harry married Ginny. Hermione marriedRon. Kids happened. Where are we supposed to go from there? (Apparently Cursed Child is where, but that’s a whole different post.)
