QUIZ: Is This a Holden Caulfield Quote, or Something a Guy Actually Said to Me on a First Date?

Steffi Lynn

I've done some online dating in my time, which means I've been on dates with guys who were just one red hunting hat away from being Holden Caulfield. Not that there's anything wrong with Holden, but he's not someone I would particularly want to date. Look, I like ranting about the shackles of modern society as much as the next person, but there's a time and a place for it, and "on a first date at Red Lobster before the waitress has even had a chance to bring out our cheddar biscuits" is neither the time nor the place.

Can you tell the difference between a Catcher in the Rye quote and things someone has actually said to me, out loud, on a first date?

1. "I don't exactly know what I mean by that, but I mean it."

2. "Maybe we should get to know each other first. Tell me something about yourself. Something no one else knows."

3. "I'm quite illiterate, but I read a lot."

4. "The first thing you'll probably want to know is where I was born, and what my lousy childhood was like, and how my parents were occupied and all before they had me, and all that David Copperfield kind of crap, but I don't feel like going into it, if you want to know the truth."

5. "Sometimes I feel like I have nothing to live for and everything to lose."

6. "I’m kind of a jerk sometimes. I don’t mean to be, that’s just how I am."

7. "Sometimes I act a lot older than I am—I really do—but people never notice it. People never notice anything."

8. "Everyone’s obsessed with money, I swear to God. Not me, though. I just want to experience things."

9. "Real ugly girls have it tough. I feel so sorry for them sometimes."

10. "Almost every time somebody gives me a present, it ends up making me sad."

11. "The thing is, it's really hard to be roommates with people if your suitcases are much better than theirs."

12. "You remind me of my little sister."

13. "Being smarter than everyone else is incredibly lonely. You know what I mean?"

14. "I don't like any shows very much, if you want to know the truth. They're not as bad as movies, but they're certainly nothing to rave about."

15. "We’re all dying, if you think about it. You, me, the mailman, a random stranger on the train. Sooner or later, we’ll all be dust."
