The Harry Potter Books, Ranked from Worst to Best

Warner Bros.

When I’m not here on SparkNotes writing about Hamlet and My Chemical Romance, I can be found saying things like "Obviously wizards must pay taxes since Hogwarts has free tuition, but do they also have to pay Muggle taxes?" offhand to strangers on public transportation.

What I’m getting at here is that I’m obsessed with Harry Potter and I love it with my whole heart. I’m not here to argue about which book is the best book, because they are all obviously the best book. However, I’m willing to admit that there is a very definitive ranking. Everyone has a favorite and a least favorite, and we’ll all be better off if we just admit that. I know, it’s hard. No parent wants to admit they have a favorite kid, but they DO, which I know for a fact because that kid wasn’t me. (I spilled orange soda on lots of couches.)

So today, in honor of July 31st and Harry’s birthday, we’re going to be ranking each and every one of the books while bearing in mind that all of them are still tremendous in their own special way.
