The 7 Most WTF Moments in Classic Literature

Great Expectations by Charles Dickens: Miss Havisham is suddenly on fire

Never has a scene reveled more in the WTF of it all than when Miss Havisham, the vengeful spinster from Great Expectations, inexplicably catches fire in the span of about two sentences. One minute she’s confessing that she raised her adopted daughter to be the scourge of men, and the next she’s ablaze.

For my part, I had to go back and re-read this passage a few times. I was unsure if she had walked into the fire or simply gone up in flames out of sheer bitterness. (Can this happen? Asking for a friend.)
