Since Lois Lowry's blockbuster novel The Giver hit bookshelves in 1993, we've all been on a steady diet of YA authoritarism. Back in the early '90s, YA dystopian lit wasn't really a thing. The Giver was groundbreaking, because it took non-outer-space sci-fi (then mostly the domain of some weirdo named Aldous Huxley) and made it relevant to teens (with a debt to one George Orwell).

We're not exaggerating when we say Lois Lowry, who wrote the book in response to losing her son, tapped something huge, setting the stage for a wave of angsty teens to take on unjust societal systems in books and movies like The Hunger Games, Delirium and Divergent. Roll up your sleeve, settle back into the dentist's chair, and open your eyeballs wide to take in these Giver-inspired hits ahead of the movie adaptation hitting theaters TONIGHT...
