How to Celebrate Geek Pride Day

How to Celebrate Geek Pride Day

We know you guys are proud to be your lovely geeky, dorky, AWESOME selves every day, but May 25 is the day to really step it up a notch. Why? Because it's GEEK PRIDE DAY. The day to take your love of clinically depressed robots or lightsabers or adorable ducklings and amp it up so the whole world knows!

And while celebrating your love of all things geek isn't exactly hard, sometimes it's tough to think of ways to do it differently than you do all the other days of the year. Luckily, we've got some ideas:

  1. Bring your towel. May 25 is especially big for Douglas Adams fans (it marks the day fans chose to celebrate two weeks after his death), so carrying a towel around is a great way to display your status as an inter-galactic Hitchhiker. It's also great in case of sudden downpours.

  2. Start a lightsaber battle with your friends. Preferably in a town center, busy shopping mall, or some other crowded area, where all your fellow geeks and geekettes can join in the fun! Don't have a lightsaber? No worries; just use the force!

  3. Stage a reading of the entire Lord of the Rings Trilogy. What better way to laud the glory of Middle Earth than by reading Tolkien's saga aloud? Extra geek points to you and your friends if it's a dramatic reading. Even more points if you've got full costumes and sound effects.

  4. Wear suspenders. This isn't singularly geeky; it's just way cool. Hey, everyone should dress snappily for Geek Pride Day! (And yes, you CAN wear suspenders over your Aragorn costume.)

  5. Have a Geek movie marathon. The Fifth Element, The Princess Bride, Blade Runner, Star Trek: the Wrath of Kahn, the Avengeres—how could you beat a marathon of some of the best geeky films out there? If you're really up for a challenge, try watching all the bad ones: Eragon, Flash Gordon, and that really awful Hulk movie. Go ahead, we dare you.

  6. Wear hard-boiled eggs and lilac. And if that doesn't make sense to you, you obviously haven't read enough Discworld. So maybe you should just start with that.

  7. Watch Unicorn City on Netflix. Just in time for Geek Pride Day, we discovered this gem of an indie film on Netflix. Basically, imagine a bunch of Dungeons and Dragons gamers creating a summer camp...and then go watch the movie, because it's called UNICORN CITY. How can you pass that up?

  8. Start an impromptu Comic Con with your friends. Who says you need to pay the big bucks to have Comic Con? Just get all your geeky friends to dress up in their best cos-play, fill a van full of your favorite comic books and RPGs and drive around looking for your favorite nerdy actors. Super bonus points if you find Nathan Fillion, David Tennant, or Zachary Levi.

  9. Two words: Lazer Tag. Just imagine you're all storm troopers chasing down Han Solo, or Ender & Co. fighting in the zero gravity chambers, or whatever makes your nerdy little heart sing.

  10. Just go sit in a comic book store. If you run out of things to do, just hit up your local geek hot-spot. We promise that SOMEONE will have a plan...or at least a Star Wars movie marathon you can attend.

How will you celebrate Geek Pride Day?
