Our 5 New Girl Crushes
Some girls just capture our hearts. We kind of want to be them. We kind of want to hang out with them. We kind of (okay, not kind of, definitely) want them to be our best friend. So, we made a list of our favorite gals who are making headlines lately. Just like our real friends—some are old, some are new, some are ... way cooler, braver, and more awesome than us.
"Malala who?" you might ask. Ms. Yousafzai is our newest hero. Yousafzai is a 15-year-old young woman from Pakistan, who was shot in the head by the Taliban in October, as part of a Taliban-lead protest against schooling girls. She lived to tell the tale, and went back to school last week. Ms. Yousafzai is incredibly cool, not to mention brave. In an interview after the shooting, she said, simply, "I want every girl to be educated." Swoon.
2. Lena Dunham
LD is not exactly new on the scene, but we just keep learning new, cool things about her. She was recently interviewed, and as always, she was asked about her body. (Sidenote: WHY are women celebs ALWAYS asked about their bodies. I'm sure they'd rather talk about anything else.) She replied that she was perfectly happy as-is, and said she specifically does not want a Victoria's Secret model body. Now, if only that was the last time Ms. Dunham was ever going to be asked about her body...
3. Kristen Bell aka Veronica Mars
Like Ms. Dunham, KB is not new to any scene, whatsoever (we mean, have you seen her sloth meltdown?!!). Still, she slothed her way back into our consciousness this month when the Veronica Mars Movie Kickstarter project became a 100% official success. Ms. Bell loves the show that made her famous so much, that among the many prizes were personalized video recordings from her. We love that she's down-to-earth and loves her fans so much. We love.
Hunger Games' Rue has not been getting much press since the first movie came out, but she is just the best. First, she didn't bat an eye about the weird race controversy over her character. Then, she showed up to the Nickelodeon Kids' Choice Awards looking cooler than anyone. And she's only 14. Can we be best friends, Rue?
Ms. Shipka is one of those rare child-to-tween-to-teen stars that is actually making a smooth transition. Consider us jealous. Our transitions were less seamless and more braces-and-acne-filled, which is why we are simply enchanted by her. She seems totally down-to-earth and effortlessly cool, in stark contrast to our 1000% effortful uncoolness. Why you gotta be so cool, Shipka? Check out her surprisingly normal Twitter.
