When you picture a stereotypical scene from a major historical era, there's a good chance that half the stuff you're picturing was invented by some screenwriter or novelist. If you're imagining stuff that makes the past seem adventurous and magical, that's a pretty good sign you're buying into the myth. History is cool, of course, but the day-to-day life in those historical periods was generally pretty boring, pretty awful, or both. Here are four of the chief offenders.
