5 Actors Who Almost Played Superheroes

Imagine an alternate reality where Iron Man is short and Batman is fat. Imagine a world where Superman looks like Jesus and Captain America looks like a nicer, more affable Jesus.

Well, if Fate had rolled her dice differently, these worlds might have been real.

Tom Cruise as Iron Man: When Spider-Man was realized as a huge blockbuster, Marvel immediately began looking for other characters to slap on the screen. The first pick was Tom Cruise, but as the movie wallowed in pre-production Cruise lost interest in the role and bailed, giving the role to Robert Downey Jr. And you know what? Thank God.

Bill Murray as Batman: In 1989, Tim Burton directed a Batman film starring Michael Keaton that changed the way the world viewed Batman—from campy caped hero to troubled, brooding vigilante. That was after Bill Murray was dropped for the role because so many people protested.

Leonardo DiCaprio as Spider-Man: See, James Cameron was going to direct the first Spider-Man in the beginning. But through a tangled web of copyright trading, Sam Raimi got the film, and he liked Tobey MacGuire better. Poor Leo.

Nicolas Cage as Superman: Yes, this almost happened, and not only with Ridiculous Cage but Brainiac and Doomsday as the villains. Cage even got fitted with a Superman suit, and then probably cried and cried when he lost the part.

John Krasinski as Captain America: He even beat out Channing Tatum. Thank God Chris Evans motorcycled in at the last minute and saved America.

Robin Williams as The Riddler: And he would've joined ranks with Alfred Molina and Jack Nicholson with People Who Played Fat Old Supervillains. Yay!
