Rowling had to change her pen name from Joanne to JK after the release of the first Harry Potter book because her publishers thought it more likely to receive male support if the author’s gender was unknown. Doesn’t seem to matter much now as she’s swarmed with fans at her 2007 Carnegie Hall book signing.
