Lovers' Lies

Eli tapped the end of his fifth cigarette, coughing repeatedly as ashes fell to the sidewalk. He looked up when she came out of the general store. Her long hair was wrapped up gracefully, her jeweled eyes lighting up as a smile spread across her face.


He wasn’t hers; the ring signaled Cassy’s true owner, but for now she was his. She came closer and frowned. “I didn’t know you smoked.”

“I don’t.”

She sighed, slipping her sunglasses into her Vera Wang bag. “After twelve years I still do not understand you.”

“Both of us know that’s a lie."
