There's no better way to spend a summer night than splayed across your living room floor with your friends, watching an endless stream of movies. This is especially true if this summer night comes right after finals, when everyone is too brain dead to think of doing anything else. Instead of brainstorming ideas for what to watch, gather your friends and pick one the options from our handy-dandy list of movie night themes.
This is an obviously great movie night theme, not only because most people have most Disney movies memorized front to back, but also because no one is ever embarrassed to sing along to all the catchy tunes.
There’s no one hipsters in training love more than Wes Anderson. His movies are quirky, retro-toned, and basically designed to appeal to the hipster aesthetic. Pop in movies like The Royal Tenenbaums, Rushmore, and The Fantastic Mr. Fox for a night that will keep your too-cool-for-anything façade intact and give you plenty to analyze and talk about the next day.
Call up your girlfriends and hunker down for a series of the best, cheesy rom-coms you can think of. Ideally, five minutes into these movies you should know whom the main character is going to end up with, and root like crazy for that guy to get the girl. My favorites include What’s Your Number, Legally Blonde, Bridget Jones’ Diary, and The Proposal.
She’s the Man, Easy A, Mean Girl—these movies all chronicle high school and the trauma it induces in the funniest way possible. Maybe you just had the worst week of your life, but I can guarantee that watching these movies in one sitting will make you feel better. At the very least, you’ll enjoy some serious eye-candy; teen movies are always cast with the hottest people.
When isn’t a Harry Potter movie marathon a good idea?
Lord of the Rings
Much like a Harry Potter marathon, a LOTR movie marathon is a no-fail way to veg out.
A subset of the action genre, heist/caper films are some of the best to watch all in a row because they’re hard to get bored of. From Ocean’s Eleven (and Twelve and Thirteen) to Inception, every heist movie has a different plan, item to steal, or thing to run away from that makes it interesting and suspenseful. These movies capitalize on glamorous locations, fancy tech, and loads of luxury. Sure, you can’t speed down a Monte Carlo highway, but you can vicariously see what it feels like.
Up the adrenaline factor with movies that feature plenty of car chases, explosions, and hand-to-hand combat. Movies like The Matrix, Kill Bill, and Pulp Fiction will get your heart rate up without forcing you to leave your couch.
If you feel like laughing all night, long consider a lineup of some of the funniest movies produced. It’s hard to go wrong with movies like The Hangover, Anchorman, and I Love You Man.
Prep yourself for this summer’s blockbusters by marathoning all the superhero movies you can get your hands on. Or just watch them to admire all the hot superhero bodies in spandex suits.
Leave your movie recommendations in the comments so we can add them to our Netflix queue!
