The Top 5 Apps for Geeks

The Top 5 Apps for Geeks

By Rachel Korowitz

You have an app to organize your apps, and an app to make the organizing app run even smoother, and then an app to streamline that app. But do you have these five deliciously geeky apps?

Name: Goggles
Developer: Google
Platforms: iPhone, Android, iPad
Cost: FREE
What it does: Take a picture of just about anything anywhere in the world. Based on that picture, barcode, QR code or whatever, Goggles will a) identify the image, b) pull up a relevant Google search, or even c) translate any foreign text in the pic. Take a picture of a Sudoku puzzle? It'll solve it for you. Kind of awesome.

Name: Star Walk
Developer: Vito Technology
Platforms: iPhone, iPad
Cost: $2.99 for iPhone, $4.99 for iPad
What it does: Hold your device up to the sky, and Star Walk will map out and identify every star, satellite, comet, and space unicorn overhead. (If you've got an Android, check out the comparable Google Sky Map.)

Name: Document Scanner
Developer: Pwn with your Phone
Platform: Android
Cost: FREE
What it does: Take pictures of documents, turn them into PDFs, and automatically upload them into online storage sites like Google Docs or Dropbox. Take a picture of the millions of scraps of paper you've been holding on to, and declutter your space without laying out cash on a scanner. (You can also check out JotNot for iPhone.)

Name: Words With Friends
Developer: Zynga
Platforms: iPhone, Android, iPad, Facebook
Cost: Free
What it does: Do you have plans this weekend? Not anymore, you don't. Imagine if someone rebooted Scrabble and made it even more ridiculously addictive. Use it wisely, and not when you have homework or chores or anything else pressing to do, say, ever.

Name: Nook
Developer: Barnes & Noble
Platforms: iPhone, Android, iPad, PC, Mac
Cost: Free
What it does: The Nook app turns your phone or computer into an e-reader so you can download all the e-books you want and carry 'em with you wherever. Wanna bring War and Peace with you on vacation without lugging around 1,200+ pages? Download it! Lots of the available e-books will cost you at least $.99, but there's a whole section of classic freebies, so you can feel frugal and virtuous about catching up on your Emily Bronte all at the same time.

What's your favorite geeky app?
