Why You Should Spend Your Weekend Catching up on NaNoReadMo

We hadn’t even heard of this awesome NaNo counterpart, PensivePensieve, but now we want in! –Sparkitors

Every November, SparkLife is overrun with posts about NaNoWriMo, during which participants write a 50,000 word novel in one month. However, most Sparklers haven't even heard of NaNoReadMo, one of the many awesome NaNo spin-offs. NaNoReadMo lasts from December 15 to January 15, and all you have to do to participate is read four novels! Here's why all Sparklers and Manklers should drop what you’re doing and read four novels over the weekend:

1. This is SparkLife, a social network attached to a website for literature study guides! Therefore, most Sparklers are proud book nerds, and we'll be darned if we can't prove our ability to read one measly book every two days!

2. It's not as grueling as NaNoWriMo. It's far more laid-back than actually writing a book, which is great for wimps like me who were too lazy to attempt more than the first few pages of a novel in November.

3. It's about trying new things! Participants are encouraged to branch out and try new or challenging genres. So if you're usually a Middle Earth fantasy buff, try some Medieval historical nonfiction! Personally, I’m trying out steampunk, including Scott Westerfeld 's Leviathan. I'm also attempting my first novel in Spanish—luckily I've read Harry Potter y el Cáliz de Fuego's English counterpart many times.

4. It’s kinda like a book club! Just as writers support each other during NaNoWriMo, during NaNoReadMo many readers coordinate their novel-reading. SparkNotes book club, anyone?

5. Winning. Don't say you're not a sucker for winning. That's a lie.

Everyone should definitely do this, and spread the word! In addition to Leviathan and Harry Potter, I'm reading The Blind Watchmaker, Light in August (for school), and possibly more!

Can you conquer four books by January 15? Which books will you choose?
