JediPanda asks that you not judge Disney based on the princess movies...and why should you, when you have these awesome gems to watch? —Sparkitors
Lately there has been a lot of fighting over the Disney Princesses and what they teach us. Say what you will about the princesses, but don't judge the Disney company solely on those ten women. All the best Disney movies are Non-Princess. They were my obsessions as a child (and now, to a slightly lesser extent), and I learned much from them. For your convienience, I have compiled a list of the 12 best Disney movies. Wasn't that kind of me?
Awesome Movie #1: Peter Pan
Why I love Peter Pan: It is a movie of adventure, romance, and hysterical racially insensitive songs ("What made the Red man Red? Hamanananana! Hamanananana!")
What I learned from Peter Pan: Love your mother, run away when you hear a clock for fear of crocodiles, but don't run away with a man in spandex that broke in through your window.
Awesome Movie #2: Jungle Book
Why I love Jungle Book: Mostly the amazing elephant army. But Baloo is pretty cool, too.
What I learned from Jungle Book: Don't make someone go to a man village. The jungle is much more fun! Learn to adapt to your environment, be proud of what you are, don't be ashamed of your species.
Awesome Movie #3: The Aristocats
Why I love the Aristocats: The kittens are so cute! And O'Malley the alley cat was just darn sexy, of course.
What I learned from the Aristocats: Everybody wants to be a cat! Don't judge people (or animals) based on social status. Don't trust the evil butler or the dog with a bowler hat.
Awesome Movie #4: Robin Hood
Why I love Robin Hood: Everyone is an animal. It's great! Robin Hood is pretty foxy! And the rooster playing the mandolin as a narrator was so cool.
What I learned from Robin Hood: It's okay to steal from cry-baby kings if you give the money to the poor. Help those less fortunate than you.
Awesome Movie #5: Oliver and Company
What I love about Oliver and Company: The hobo who collects dogs, cute little Oliver, and the chihuahua!
What I learned from Oliver and Company: Don't judge scary hobos, and don't give up—friends can help you live and grow.
Awesome Movie #6: Lion King
Why I love Lion King: You can't hate the Lion King! I love Zazu, Mufasa, Rafiki, and the music.
What I learned from the Lion King: You can't run from your past, don't forget your potential, duck when Rafiki tries to hit you with a stick, and you are a baboon and I am not.
Awesome Movie #7: Hunchback of Notre Dame
Why I love Hunchback: Sigh, I do love Hunchback. The music, Djali the goat, but most of all CLOPIN!
What I learned from Hunchback: Be kind to others, don't limit your expectations, and listen to those wise old gargoyles.
Awesome Movie #8: Hercules
What I love about Hercules: The Muses, Hades, Herc changing from a wimp to a buff hottie, and Pegasus.
What I learned from Hercules: You will find somewhere you belong, don't mock the outcast, and love conquers all—even death!
Awesome Movie #9: Tarzan
What I love about Tarzan: It is arguably the best Disney movie ever (seriously, I will argue!). Tarzan is amazing... as are Jane, the Professor, Kala, Tantor, and Tarzan's tree surfing.
What I learned from Tarzan: Home is where your heart is, you can achieve greatness, and find a way to work with what you have.
Awesome Movie #10: Emperor's New Groove
What I love about Emperor's New Groove: Kuzco, llama face, Pacha, and Kronk. Oh and Kronk's shoulder devil and angel!
What I learned from Emperor's New Groove: Accept yourself for what you are, don't be a selfish emperor, evil comes in all ages and stages of ugliness.
Awesome Movie #11: Lilo and Stitch
Why I love Lilo and Stitch: Stitch is adorable. Oh, and Elvis songs!
What I learned from Lilo and Stitch: Don't make fun of the weird girl, make weekly donations to Pudge or suffer a snow storm, don't be afraid to be yourself, and more movies should include only Elvis songs.
Awesome Movie #12: A Goofy Movie
Why I love Goofy Movie: Bigfoot, Goofy, the wonderful songs, and Max's dreams.
What I learned from Goofy Movie: To capture Bigfoot all you need is some BeeGees music and a sock puppet, don't lie to your parents, and don't be ashamed of your family.
Disney is so much more than the princesses and people often forget it. I suggest you pick one (or all!) of these amazing movies and watch it, particularly if you have never seen it before. Prepare to be amazed and amused!
