Why I'm Not Excited About the Doctor Who Movie

Have you heard? There's a Doctor Who movie in development! Despite the fact that it will probably never get made, I've decided to start worrying about it—and the fact that Hollywood consistently ruins TV show adaptations—right now. Here's why I think this movie will be a disaster:

1. Their choice of director. It's rumored that Harry Potter director David Yates will be directing Doctor Who. I love the Harry Potter movies, but the things I like best about Doctor Who are the dialogue, the humor, the colors—things so radically different from Harry Potter. They want someone who can capture that "British" essence, but I think Yates is the WRONG person to do this.

2. Their refusal to focus on the TV show. This has happened in DW history before, but it's on such a huge scale now that I have to object! Don't just take the name and the concept and throw in some random movie star to be the Doctor! The history of the show, the long relationships—those things are important!

3. The casting. They haven't started doing anything with the concept yet (Yates decided very recently that he wants to be part of the project), BUT I have heard one actor's name thrown around a lot. It's a name of a certain American whom I love, but who could never in a million years be a good doctor: Johnny Depp. I love him, and I love his movies, but could anyone really seem him being our beloved doctor? This is sad!

4. The simple fact that this is Hollywood we're talking about. That kind of says it for me. Look, Hollywood, we really like the show. Just because something’s popular does not mean you have to go and pee all over it. In fact, that's exactly what you SHOULD'NT do! Come on, it's British. WE LOVE THE BRITISHNESS! Just keep it that way. Don't ruin it for us.
