JazzPanda wrote her own post of awesome un-American songs...and they are REALLY awesome. —Sparkitors
After reading gabbygaleglee's post about multicultural, supermegafoxyawesomehot, niche songs (all of which gave my ears many hours of joy), I thought I'd add my own favorites to the list. I'm a Europop fiend—I am diplomatically described as absolutely beyond clinically obsessed with Eurovision—but the songs I've chosen come from sources as eccentric as a sombrero-wearing horse. Which would be the bomb. Just sayin'.
- "Moyen Moyenne" by Max Boublil feat. Luce
Don't be put off by the Frenchness, my dear Sparklers! Google Translate is your friend. Max Boublil is a French comedian who makes freaking hilarious songs, a bit like The Lonely Island but French. He's cute, funny and talented, what more could you want? This song is about a couple who find each other "average." He sings it with Star Academy winner Luce, and it always puts me in a happy, giggly, skippy mood.
"Beichte" by Tokio Hotel
This song has the dubious honor of being among the songs played by my German teacher as a teaching aid. Tokio Hotel is a Magdeburg-based band that sings in German, but is enormously popular in Europe and Japan. "Beichte" is one of their earlier creations, and it will crawl into your brain and set up habitation there, demanding that you surrender yourself and sing along. If I'm honest, I wasn't sure about this song at first, but it grew on me, and now I can't stop listening. Lead singer Bill Kaulitz's hair is also simply a work of art.
"Oah" by Alexander Rybak
This chap won Eurovision in 2009, but he's more significant to me than that, because liking Alexander "Most Adorable Person In the World Ever" Rybak is how I made friends with both the guy I'm currently crushing on and another of my really close friends. The guy sings like an angel, plays the violin, and looks like a piece of pure squee, so I consider him to be my personal Cupid. "Oah" is about Mr. Rybak pursuing a girl named Moa who keeps turning him down, until finally everything ends happily and his almost-creepy persistence pays off as they get it on on a plane. This song makes me wish I had a guy to serenade me around school and hide teddy bears in my locker, because it's the cutest damn thing EVER.
"Satellite" by Lena Meyer-Landrut
This won Eurovision in 2010, and it's not exactly hard to see why. Lena's Mockney accent+chorus catchier than a cold+limitless positivity= win, my friends, major win. Lena is simultaneously quirky, crazy and just so lovely that you can't help but smile. Her other songs are just as great, especially "What Happened To Me" and "Bee." She's not just good at one genre either, the large majority of her songs are diverse in style, and I adore it! A little bit hipster but also a little bit pop, there's simply no excuse for not having Lena on your iPod or other musical device.
"Sushi" by Cocoon
This song got me through many a trying time, be it a long journey or emotional breakdown, because it's the epitome of relaxed and peaceful. Cocoon is a French pop-folk two piece that sings in English, and I believe they may have been mentioned by LadyM in her brilliant French Adventure series. For good reason: they're amazing. The vocals are wispy, the melody is as soothing as a warm blanket in winter and the whole effect is almost haunting. The lyrics of this song fixate on death, but you find you actually don't mind.
"New Tomorrow" by A Friend in London
A Friend in London comes from Denmark, and I downloaded this song by mistake when trying to buy "Lipstick," the Irish entry by Jedward (who, on a separate note, have a hilarious Twitter you should totes follow.) Anyway, I downloaded this because my thumb missed the button, but I in no way regret this. New Tomorrow is an anthemic joy, uplifting and brilliant. The singers have great hair, not that I am shallow at all. But seriously, New Tomorrow is a power to be reckoned with, and by the time the final "come on boys, come on girls" rolls around, you should be waving your arms in emotional completion.
And that's not even to get started on my favourite Asian pop songs...
Do you totally in love with everything European now?
