I'm not going to lie: I wasn't the biggest fan of high school, and it didn't like me so much either. (We're not exactly on speaking terms at the moment.) But I'm not an unreasonable person; I'm willing to admit that some of the things I learned in the hallowed halls of my earlier education were undeniably worthwhile. I now pass that knowledge onto you.
-The quadratic formula. For some unknown reason, I never memorized it. Now I'm in college-level calculus, and still have to look it up every time I need to find the critical points of a polynomial. It's rather embarrassing.
-It pays to be friends with people who serve food. In high school, it meant free cookies when fetching coffee for your teacher; in college, it means free cupcakes from the student-run cafe.
-Networking matters. Popularity in high school transforms into “making friends with your professors so you can get internships” in college.
- Nobody likes a slow walker. Not in the hallways, not ever.
-Class participation. Another thing I never really learned how to do, beyond the obligatory “read this poem aloud” and “go embarrass yourself at the chalkboard trying to remember the quadratic formula.” Apparently, useful college-level skills actually include “make relevant and interesting points during class discussion.”
-Columbus didn't discover America, Marie Antoinette didn't say “let them eat cake,” and Mrs. O'Leary's cow did not kick a lantern and cause the Great Chicago Fire of 1871. Saying any of these things in a college class will make you sound silly. Yay, history!
-Mean Girls will ALWAYS be one of my favorite movies. Even when I'm old and I start taking my wig off when I'm drunk, and I can't relate to it anymore, it will have a special place in my heart.
-The best way to make new friends? Food. Bring cupcakes into your class on your birthday in high school, and share homemade cookies with your floormates in college. Trust me on this.
-Don't ever eat the steamed broccoli from the cafeteria.
Ginger's Song of the Week: Introducing Kids These Days, a crazy-awesome band from Chicago that just played a concert at my school. I can't decide if they're an alt-rock band that just happens to have a rapper, or a rap group that just happens to have a brass section. I don't pretend to understand. I just enjoy.
What worthwhile lessons did you learn in high school? Here's one from us: Always carry an extra stick of deodorant in your backpack. You never know when you're gonna need it.
