Dressing Up In Red and Gold

Dressing Up In Red and Gold

By kat_rosenfield

It is crisp, cool, and perfectly autumnal up here in New England, and today, that meant just one thing: it was time to drag the gold velvet out of storage.

I can't even look at this skirt from April through September without feeling sweaty and gross, but when the weather gets cool, it's one of my favorite pieces: a deep, rich, orange-gold velvet with a slippery lining, a high waist, a covered button, and braided accents on each hip. It's warm and fancy and feels very expensive. Love, love, love. (And it doesn't hurt that I snagged it on sale at H&M for about $10, either.) I wish so hard that it were socially acceptable for me to sweep around town in a giant embellished ballgown made of this same fabric... but it's not. Sad face.

The important thing about a statement-making skirt like this is to let it run the show, and not throw a bunch of competing textures, patterns, or flashy accessories into the mix. So I've kept my top classic and simple, opted for a pair of neutral shoes, and topped it all off with a pop of red on my lips and around my neck.

The stylishness of which almost makes up for the fact that while taking snapshots for this post, I was completely and totally photobombed by my dog. IN EVERY PICTURE.

Head to toe: Blouse and skirt, H&M; shoes, Ralph Lauren via DSW; necklace, vintage and courtesy of my mother.

Are you wearing any statement-making fall pieces this year?
