The Ups and Downs of Black Hair

The Ups and Downs of Black Hair

bobthespider adds another side to the Great Hair Debate: today, it's RED versus BLACK! Which color will win out in the end?—Sparkitors

Where are my black-haired ladies and gents at? We've seen the pros and cons of having blonde hair, brown hair, curly hair, long hair, cat hair, etc., but what about the under-appreciated black hair? Black hair is the most common natural hair color in the world. It's a dominant genetic trait, and it's found in people of all races and backgrounds (I obtained my hair because my parents are Bangladeshi). Growing up surrounded by pretty blonde kids, I despised my black hair, but now I've grown to love it. Nevertheless, it still has its ups and downs...

Downs:

1. We don't get a title! Okay, so some would count us as brunettes, but the word brunette literally means "young brown-haired woman." I think that we deserve a name of our own! Any suggestions? And no, I don't want to be called a "blackhead."

2. "DID YOU DYE YOUR HAIR?" Um. No. It's natural. It will always be natural. This obviously does not apply to people who dye their hair, but for those with natural black hair, it's an annoying question!

3. Being mistaken for goths or emos. This happens especially when you wear eyeliner and straighten your hair. Don't ask me if I'm a goth when YOU SAW ME SINGING ALONG TO TAYLOR SWIFT 10 MINUTES AGO.

4. Dyeing it another colour is not easy. If you want to dye your hair, you have to bleach it first, which is basically double-dyeing and damages your hair. And it's not always successful.

5. Dyed black hair has so many problems. It can look flat, it doesn't fade, the roots show up easily, it contrasts with skin color...need I go on?

Ups:

1. Pretty descriptions! Who wouldn't want their hair described as raven-black, jet-black, midnight-black, or blue-black? It makes us seem so exotic and mythical.

2. The stereotypes are sometimes flattering. We're perceived as mysterious, competent, and hard-working. We're deep and emotional, artists and poets, creative and imaginative, which is way cooler than being thought of as dumb or the girl-next-door.

3. People always play with your hair. Guys and girls alike! When I'm in the middle of conversing with someone, someone usually starts stroking my hair without even thinking about it.

4. Compliments and more compliments! People are always asking me if they can have my hair, and it is now an inside joke that when I die, my friends will inherit my hair. And it's always nice when someone tells you that they love your hair!

5. Glorious locks. Believe it or not, black hair is the shiniest of all hair colors! It also has very lustrous properties. It's usually thick with lots and lots of lovely volume. My hairdresser always tells me how lucky I am to have thick hair.

So, there you go, my lovely black-haired Sparklers. Now, go find a mirror and compliment your beautiful hair for being so fantastically supercalifragilisticexpialidocious!

Do you love your hair color? Or would you rather be midnight-black?
