My calendar insists that summer isn't really over until September 21st.
My calendar is such a liar.
Because really, between the chilly nights, the arrival of pumpkin-spiced products at Starbucks, and the fact that every kid in my neighborhood has completely disappeared (or, y'know, gone back to school), summer is obviously over.
Which means that this week—the last one for awhile in which 80-degree temperatures are a sure thing—I brought out my daisy dukes for one last whirl before they go into cold-weather storage.
Some people claim that daisy dukes (also known as cut-off denim shorts, or "jorts") are best acquired by cutting off the legs of your favorite pair of jeans, fraying the edges with a hairbrush, and allowing the pants to be reborn as a summertime staple. I, on the other hand, have a near-impossible time finding jeans that fit me well, and the last thing I'm interested in doing when I do find a great pair is mauling them with a pair of scissors. So, I bought my shorts pre-made and pre-frayed... and I'm not sorry. As you can see by my super-serious fashionista face in this photo.

Why am I throwing bitchface at my curtains? Don't ask. It's FASHION.
If, like me, you're watching summer slip away (and anticipating the imminent arrival of many months in which you will be pasty, cold, and wearing nothing but sweaters), this is your last best opportunity to show off the dregs of your summer tan and let your legs get some above-the-knee exposure. Early September in the Northeast is still warm enough for shorts and chunkier sandals, especially if you sport a few layers on top and keep your outfit palette more earthy. I can't dress up like a day-glo sherbet popsicle at this time of year, but some neutral wedges, a grey blouse with subtle pops of red and royal blue, an earthy leather belt, and an olive drab jacket on top of it all makes this perfectly appropriate for the season at hand.
Head to toe: Jacket, BDG; blouse, Urban Outfitters; shorts, Forever 21; shoes, Nine West.
What are you wearing during summer's last gasp?
