The Pros and Cons of Being Blonde

The Pros and Cons of Being Blonde

By Contributor

HazelRachel, you've made us extremely jealous of your hair. Is that a pro or a con? —Sparkitors

I've been a blonde my whole life. Never has another color of hair sat atop my head, nor have I ever wanted one (unless rainbow hair was naturally possible). Although my peers say I'm extremely lucky, being blonde isn't as special to me as it is to them. I love my hair, but not some of the consequences that come with it.

Cons:

1. Everyone. Wants. Your. Hair. Seriously. Lots of my friends have attempted to dye or highlight their hair to match mine. It doesn't look good on them. Why can't people just stick with their own color?

2. Your friends constantly play with it. If I'm riding the bus and a girl is sitting behind me, she will begin to play with my hair (or try to at least). It's come to the point that I carry a unicorn horn with me to stab stray hands. (Just kidding. Mostly.)

3. Nobody takes you seriously. I can't tell you how many times I've heard the saying "dumb blonde." It's hard enough to be stereotyped for being a girl, but being blonde at the same times means you have to work twice as hard to earn any reputation for being smart. When I say I want to be a doctor, people seem to be surprised.

4. People assume your boobs will be enormous. Maybe it's just because my mom has bigger boobs—and I mean huge—but guys always seem to look at my chest with disappointment when I turn around. Stupid stereotypes.

5. Mosquitoes love you. They actually prefer blondes' blood over any other, which is why I look like I have chicken pox after I go outside.

Still, there are some good things about having hair the color of sunshine and smiley faces. For instance:

    1. People get jealous. Okay, so it's not exactly the best part about being blonde, but it sure gives your self-confidence a boost when you see girls eye your head with envy.

    2. Compliments are a part of daily life. When I go out with friends, or even just a trip to the mall by myself, complete strangers—usually non-creepy ones—will tell me that I have beautiful hair, which is not something I mind hearing.

    3. Blondes have more fun Recent studies show that blondes, on average, go on more dates than people with other hair colors. That can't be a bad thing, right?

    4. We aren't as common as brunettes. Believe it or not, I was the only blonde in my whole grade last year. That made it very easy to stand out in class pictures.

    5. It goes great with blue. This may be more personal, but blue is my favorite color, andit's nice to be able to wear it whenever I want.

What do you think? Is being blonde worth the price?
