7 Reasons to See Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides

I was a little skeptical about seeing the latest film in the Pirates series, since the last two movies were subpar, but I’m really glad I saw it. This movie is different from its predecessors, so there are no curses, CGI fish-people or giant women involved. Director Rob Marshall brings a fresh new story to the big screen, which makes the movie truly worth seeing. Here are 7 reasons why you should check out this great summer flick:

1. The cast. Johnny Depp and Geoffrey Rush are awesome as usual, and Penelope Cruz kicks some booty (pirate pun) as Jack’s former flame, Angelica. Ian McShane is the perfect Blackbeard, and Sam Clafin plays the new hottie Phillip. Need I say more?

2. The plot. In this movie, Captain Jack Sparrow is off on a new adventure to find the Fountain of Youth. However, the Spanish, the King of England, and Blackbeard are after it too. There’s the question of who’s siding with whom, and some elements of the story make you think. Plus, the subplots involve some good ol’-fashioned L-O-V-E.

3Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley are nowhere to be found. I don’t know about you, but I was getting tired of them. Plus, the absence of Will and Elizabeth places more focus on Jack.

4. It has the perfect mix of old and new characters. This movie does a great job of keeping some of the characters we know and love (Jack, Barbossa, and Gibbs) while introducing new ones without making things confusing. I really enjoyed the different faces, and I hope we see them again.

5. The action. Of course, there is the typical swashbuckling-pirate-sword-fighting, but there are plenty of tense moments that keep you on the edge of your seat (the mermaids!). One part even reminds me of a scene in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade.

6. The humor. What’s a Pirates movie without some of Jack’s witty comments? Just like the others in the series, this film has a good amount of humor without being too facetious. However, when it comes to jokes, this movie trumps the other three.

7. It leaves you wanting more! When the movie ended, I kept thinking, “Wait! What happens to…?” Some parts of the story are not resolved, so I guess (and hope) they’ll make another one! P.S. Don’t forget to stay for a special scene after the end credits!

Do you plan to see the movie?
