"WOOOOOOOOOOOOO!" is the phrase that may currently be running through your head. Why? Because after months of pining, you finally struck up a conversation with your crush... and scored his phone number!
(If "BOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!" is the phrase that is running through your head, you possibly just saw Pirates of the Caribbean 4.)
We're afraid we can't help you with that, but if it's a phone number ye have, you're in luck! We can tell you exactly how to use it. "What do you mean?" you say. "Don't I just text my crush with stream-of-consciousness, minute-by-minute updates on my life and also my breakfast?"
No. No, you don't do that. Listen to us instead.
Before we begin, let us introduce you to Rule #1 of text conversation initiation: the phrase "Hey, want to see a movie Saturday?" is ALWAYS appropriate. Unless that movie is Pirates of the Caribbean 4.
THE SITUATION: You spot your crush in American Eagle going to try on jeans. You also happen to be in American Eagle! It's the perfect opportunity to meet unexpectedly and chat!
What to text: "Hey, what are you up to today?" (Ideally followed by "No way, I'm there too!")
What not to text: "Do u need different jeans???? I can bring them to u... :-D"
THE SITUATION: On Friday morning you overhear her saying that she has no plans for the weekend.
What to text:
On Friday afternoon: Rule #1 is pretty much made for this situation. But if you want to go in a different direction, or the thought of being alone with your crush in a dark room full of popcorn makes you pass out from terror, try this: "Hey! I'm having a pizza night with some friends. Want to come?" (NOTE: This text must be followed by lightning-fast organization of said pizza night.)
On Saturday morning (after 10 a.m.): "What are you up to today? I was thinking of going SCUBA diving/bird watching/to hang out in a bookstore for 9 hours. Want to come?"
What not to text:
On Friday afternoon: "I'm sittin behind uuu. On the bus. Talk to meeeeee??? ... :-D."
On Saturday morning (before 7 a.m.): "I MADE U BREAKFAST. U LIKE BACON RIGHT? P.S. Can u come open ur window, it's cold out here.... :-D"
THE SITUATION: You hear that he's broken up with his SO.
What to text:
The day you hear about it: "Hey, sorry to hear about you and Jerkarina McGee." (NOTE: Do not actually call anyone Jerkarina McGee unless it is her actual name.)
A few weeks later: "Hey, isn't this English assignment horrible? Do you want to work on it together tomorrow?"
What not to text:
The day you hear about it: "YAAAAAY! ... :-D"
A few weeks later: "So I know you just broke up with McGee, but I was wondering if you wanted to go on a date with me on Sat. Not like a date-date, but just go out. But it can be a date if you want. Because I like you but I don't know if you like me. It's cool if you don't. But we can go out anyway. Just like friends. On a date. Haha. Just kidding. But do you like bacon? Because I can make you bacon. We can have a bacon date if you want. Or a bacon just-going-out-like-friends. P.S. ...:-D"
