I’ve come to the conclusion that choosing your classes for next year is hard when you don’t know what you want to major in.
That’s not strictly true. I’ll major in Art History if I can’t think of anything better—I still adore the subject, and recently received A’s on both my midsem and paper. The problems I have with Art History are detailed, for your enjoyment, in this post! If you don’t want to read it again, I’ll sum it up: the only jobs that have anything to do with this illustrious major require more schooling (something I’m not entirely sure I want), and I’m slightly fed up with the Art History community. Or maybe a lot fed up with the Art History community. They can be snobs sometimes.
This leaves me in the precarious position of balancing classes for the major that I may or may not want, and trying to figure out what I DO want to major in. Keep in mind that I have to declare by the end of next year. So I’ll begin by taking random classes that I think I might enjoy. ENTER: Introduction to Psychology w/ lab. I’m psyched (BAD PUN ALERT!) for this class. Even though it’s technically “science,” I feel like there’s some potential there. Like, right at this moment, I’d like nothing more than to learn about what is running through the minds of people when they do things like procrastinate, purposefully watch Jerry Springer, and listen to "Friday." You know, I’m really excited for this—I might as well declare a Pysch major right now.
Seeing as how, by the end of the semester, I’ll have sixteen Art History credits (half of what is required for the major), I figured I might as well take more of the requirements. ENTER: Museum Studies, and Intro to Studio Art. Museum Studies is, apparently, taught by someone excellent, so maybe it will be more interesting than the name implies. And I’m SO incredibly excited for Studio Art. It’s been far too long since I’ve awkwardly drawn naked people in a room full of people who are all seemingly less awkward than me.
Finally: “The Craft of Fiction,” a 200 level English class. I really like reading stories, you guys. I’m not so good at analyzing them, and apparently my essay-writing skills need serious work (I’m absolutely horrible at writing thesises. Theses. Thesii?), but I’ve never written fiction before. I’m pretty excited to try. Maybe a double major? Maybe? Or I could just go become the next Tolkien—that would also work. I could probably write something more readable than the Silmarillion.
Ginger’s Song of the Week: I will seriously consider giving you a prize if you can tell me what the lyrics to this are without looking them up. Another prize to whomever can tell me the plot (or thesis!) of the music video. Anyway, it’s really horribly catchy, and makes me feel like dancing.
How did you choose your classes? Do you know what you're majoring in yet?
