A Few Reasons Why The Twilight Series Isn’t Actually That Bad

thispaperdream backs up yankeegirl93's controversial recent post!—Sparkitors

I’m a fan of Dan Bergstein's Twilight posts; they're brilliant, funny, and totally unique. But I’m also not afraid to stand up for my own opinions, and after reading yankeegirl93’s post and the comments that followed, I had to back her up. I decided to go a step further, bust a few myths, and tell you all why Twilight isn't as bad as you think.

Myth #1: Edward is creepy because he’s old. In reading fiction, it’s important to get outside your own perspective and into that of the characters. Edward is a vampire. He may be old from our perspective, but considering the plot of the story, it doesn’t make sense to hold him to the same standards as everyone else. I agree that if Edward truly was a 100+ year old man, the story would be very, very creepy. But it would also be a completely different story. Also, what do you expect from him? Would you rather Edward date a 100+ year old woman? Would that be more appropriate? Not really…

Myth #2: Bella is whiny, annoying, and a bad role model. This is actually true. BUT, have you ever stopped to wonder why she is this way? Twilight is not really about Bella. It’s about intriguing mythical creatures blending into normal life. It’s a “what if?” love story. The concept is actually really fascinating, and Stephenie Meyer created the boring character of Bella to be a foil to the vampires. If Bella was fantastic, the vampires would seem like a side note. It would be like, “look at this wonderfully fantastic gorgeous heroine I’ve dreamed up…oh and there’s a pale dude who’s probably important too.” Honestly, I think that would be a lot more boring.

Myth #3: Jacob is gross because he dates babies. Ok, I’m not sure what to say to this other than it’s a disgustingly contrived misinterpretation. Imprinting is something completely made up and yet everyone is judging it according to normal societal standards. Why is it wrong for Bella’s daughter to have a werewolf protector? I think it’s cool. Jacob is not a normal guy, he’s a mythological creature. The whole situation is not normal and it’s not real. But that’s what makes it an intriguing work of fiction.

Just like yankeegirl93, I’m not saying you should like Twilight. Similarly, I hope you’re not saying I shouldn’t like it. Regardless, Twilight isn't half as bad as most people make it out to be. Stephenie Meyer may not be the best author out there, but at the end of the day she’s the one making millions of dollars, and you’re not.

BAM. That is TOO true. Changed your mind about Twilight yet?
