The Daily Trials of an English Major: Spring Break! (Well, Almost)

By Contributor

While Courtney Guth enjoys spring break, we'll enjoy staring out our office windows while softly weeping :0/ —Sparkitors

There are currently 3 days, 14 hours, 7 minutes, and 22 seconds until spring break—not that I’m counting or anything. I’m all for being productive and staying on top of everything, but I honestly cannot wait for spring break to begin. All I have to do is complete two papers and ace two more midterms and then I’m free! A whole week free from boring geography lectures, stressful tests, and smelly dorm rooms.

While most college students flock to Florida for a week filled with Charlie Sheen-esque debauchery, I’ve been there, done that. (Well, not the debauchery part, but I did go to Florida for winter break, so that’s close enough.) Instead I will be taking an all-expenses-paid trip to the most fabulous resort of all—home.

Why drop what’s left of my meager bank account on a party-filled vacation I may not even remember, when I can enjoy being home for free? I have plenty of fun things to do at home:

Catch up on reading: As an English major, I, of course, have lots of reading to complete over break. For my one literature class, I’m responsible for completing Madame Bovary and A Doll’s House. For the other, I need to read Othello. I’ve already read two of them, so it shouldn’t take too long. Then I’ll still have plenty of time to read my guilty pleasure: fluffy, drama-filled “chick lit.” If I find Shakespearean parallels in Gossip Girl, that still counts for something, right??

Movie musical marathon: I am a huge theatre geek; in fact, I list musicals at the top of my favorite things. As a future English teacher, I believe everybody’s got the right to enjoy a good musical, so this spring break, day by day, I’ll be enjoying my favorite shows after I brush up on my Shakespeare. If at the end of the day ya got trouble, just pop in a musical. Now, later, soon, it doesn’t matter when. I could spend 525,600 minutes watching musicals, but just a few days during break on my own will suffice. (Anyone who gets every reference I just made deserves a cookie!)

Have F.U.N. with my best friends: Sing along with me! F is for friends who do stuff together! U is for you and me! N is for anywhere and anytime, here with my best buddy! Lucky for me I have a great group of best buddies. However, of my core group of friends, each of us ended up at a different college. Fortunately, some of us have the same spring break, so we all get to spend time together. I’m sure more than a few evenings will be filled with catching up on everything we’ve missed…while Facebook-creeping each other. Even without technology, when we get together, it’s almost as though we’ve never been apart. My friends are the Patrick to my Spongebob. They are the Phineas to my Ferb. They are the Robin to my Batman. The…well, you get the point; I get to see my friends, and that’s always fun.

Go somewhere. Anywhere. Correction, anywhere my budget allows. And since I am a poor college student, that won't be very far, especially considering the price of gas at the moment. Bye-bye, leftover Christmas money! I’m thinking perhaps a nice day trip to visit some other friends, maybe explore the next town over. Random adventures are always quite fun.

Even if I don’t end up going anywhere, I’ll still be making the most of this week. After all, there’s no place like home (and a clichéd ending).

What are you planning to do for spring break?
