SparkStyle: Stormy Weather

By kat_rosenfield

BOO: The weather in New York on Sunday was windy, rainy, and humid.

YAY: I got to take my new wellies for a watery test drive! Wheeeeee!

A good pair of waterproof boots are a must-have for me—partly because living in NYC means lots of rainy-day walking around, and partly because I've never met a puddle that didn't inspire me to cavort around in the water like a large, deranged biped otter. And after my last pair developed an unfortunate crack in the calf, I was on the hunt for some stylish wellies that weren't too expensive. (Which is harder than you'd think; what is it with people being willing to pay $100 or more for what are basically rubber foot tires?)

My criteria were as follows:

Color: You can get rain boots in an incredible, tempting variety of colors and patterns, but for versatility's sake, I wanted my boots to be a solid, muted hue. But I also didn't want them to be black, because a) that's boring, and b) I'm pretty sure that black wellies are what the serial killer wore in "I Know What You Did Last Summer."

Style: Most rubber boots hit around mid-calf and are cut generously, so that they're easy to slip on over pants and then switch out for more stylish footwear when you get where you're going. But since I'll be kicking around Manhattan in these bad boys, I wanted a more fashion-forward silhouette with a taller, slimmer shaft.

Price: Like I said, hundreds of dollars for rubber footwear? Not my thing.

Although I admit to being really, really tempted by this pair of flaming red puddle stompers from Target (I had the same exact ones when I was four, and they were awesome), I ended up springing for Urban Outfitters brand rainboots in a lovely deep green. At $38, they're durable but totally affordable. And paired with leggings and a layered tunic-hoodie-jacket combo, they were just colorful enough to add some flair to this outfit, but not so garish that I couldn't wear them out for coffee later that day.

My dog though so, too. Or at least, that's what I assume he was thinking when he tried to eat them.

(The rest of my outfit, head to toe: Forever 21 beret, Target faux-leather bomber jacket, Delia*s zip-front hoodie, Charlotte Russe tunic, H&M leggings.)
