What It's Like Being a Band Geek

Monty Python, Converse, and Queen? You sound more like band hotshots, meganpikalvr12. –Sparkitors

Those of you who aren’t in band yourself probably have at least one friend who’s a band geek. The strange, wild, and unlikely stories they’ve told about band? I’m here to tell that they’re all true. Having a friend that’s a band geek is a good thing: you’ll know about stuff that happened two minutes ago all the way on the other side of school, because we band members have got an insanely fast gossip connection. And if you can’t go to the away games, you’ll always hear the best stories about them from your friends in band. Here are some other things you should know about the life and ridiculous mind of a band geek.

  • When we cheer extra loudly in the stands, we’re doing it to tune out the cheerleaders—the only natural enemy of the band geek.
  • We actually work hard at band camp.
  • There is a semi-official band uniform: Converse, jeans, t-shirts, and hoodies.
  • We constantly go to each others' houses before games and competitions.
  • We judge rival bands based on their performances.
  • The fans and football teams want to attack each other, but the bands make friends and get dates (as long as we’ve approved the other band’s performance).
  • We make fun of each other.
  • We fight like family.
  • We make family trees within our sections.
  • Being in band is like living at sea: when one person gets sick, everyone gets it.
  • The band director is always right.
  • We name our instruments and will protect them with our lives.
  • We have all at one time sung or played "Bohemian Rhapsody"—it's the band geek’s "Stairway to Heaven."
  • Unsurprisingly, we love classic rock.

Sound familiar?
