You had us at apple pie, ‘olwhatshername! –Sparkitors
Did summer romance pass you by in 2010? Think you have to wait until next year to have a seasonally-based fling? Well, think again. Fall is totally made for those flings that are too cool to last in the sweltering heat of summer. Here's what you get with a fall romance...
1. Alliteration. Fall fling. It was meant to be. None of the other seasons can claim this argument. Disregard the fact that “spring” rhymes with “fling.”
2. Pretty leaves. What could be more romantic than you and your new mate strolling through the park as the trees are changing colors? There’s also the time-honored tradition of playing in giant leaf piles. Less scratchy than summer sand, less melty than winter snowdrifts.
3. Yummy cider...for two. Fall has all sorts of delicacies you can enjoy with your sweetie: pumpkin pie, apple pie, banana cream pie. Actually, if you want to keep fall romance alive, you might want to go easy on the pie and stick to the cider.
4. Perfect temperatures. It’s not summer anymore, and it’s not winter yet, so you will be neither sweating like a pig nor shivering like a pig without a winter coat. Those aren’t good looks on you.
5. Everything is still new. You’ve got a new class schedule, new friends, new after-school activities to worry about—meaning you’re totally ready to start a new relationship, too! Unless newness terrifies you, in which case you should wait until you can handle your class schedule without crying before you try to find romance.
6. Two-person Halloween costumes. The possibilities are endless! Bonnie and Clyde. Sonny and Cher. Phineas and Ferb. Plus, trick-or-treating together can be uber-romantic. Tip: take little kids—they’re candy magnets. Second, clarifying tip: take little kids whose parents have given you permission.
7. Absence makes the heart grow fonder. Since it’s fall, you’ll be busy enough to appreciate the time you can spend together, whereas in a summer romance, you grow tired of staring at each other’s sweaty faces by August.
8. You’re bound to last through the holidays. If you can get through fall, what kind of dink is going to dump you right before the holidays? But save all present receipts, just in case.
9. What happens in fall, stays in fall. No one ever asks, “Hey, what’d you do this fall?” When you break up at the end of the summer, people constantly remind you of it with every innocent question about what you did over break.
10. No pressure. With fall romance, you get to avoid those ominous questions at the end of the season: Should we break up now? How will we make it work when school starts? Will we drift apart? In fall, your relationship is stronger from the start. It can stand a busy schedule! It doesn’t need bathing suits and ice-cream trucks to keep it alive! What’s that? It’s the all-incredible fall fling; hear it roar!!!
