Top 10 Ways to Embrace Nostalgia

Top 10 Ways to Embrace Nostalgia

We think this post by musica44 is adorable, and we're going straight to the grocery store to buy peanut butter after work! —Sparkitors

As I enter my senior year of high school, I find myself looking back at the last 12 years and wondering where the time went. When I share my nostalgia with friends, they "awwww" at the mention of the first day of school, fun times on the playground, and preteen trips to the mall. As the clock of my final year of high school begins to tick away, I try to come up with as many ways as I can think of to reminisce.

10. Peruse yearbooks. Yearbooks were painstakingly made so that five, ten, or fifty years later, saps like me could look back and laugh/cry at the ridiculous hairstyles and adorable classmates.

Supercharge it: Make a scrapbook of every picture you have since birth. Show everyone except your mom; you want to avoid the hysterical tears at all costs.

9. Walk down the halls of your elementary school. Vividly recall insignificant occurrences to whoever will listen. The better part of your childhood is spent in elementary school, so why not relive the glory days?

Supercharge it: Stop in to see all of your former teachers during the school day so you can see all of the little kids and remember being just like them.

8. Watch home videos. Study everything from your first steps to awkward dance recitals, all in the lovely quality of 1990’s technology!

Supercharge it: Watch them in chronological order, with the whole family.

7. Sing Backstreet Boys at the top of your lungs. Dance. There’s no denying the joy you feel in your heart when “As Long As You Love Me” plays. BSB beats Justin Bieber every time.

Supercharge it: Make an entire playlist dedicated to tunes from the '90s/early 2000s. Have a jam session with friends, and make a music video, complete with very cheesy dance moves.

6. Eat peanut butter and jelly. This go-to sandwich was a staple in my lunch box as a child. Thankfully, you’re never too old for PB&J.

Supercharge it: Complete the meal with a juice box, macaroni and cheese, and colorful cereal.

5. Play with Barbie dolls/Pokémon/other random childhood toys. While nothing beats the imaginative child brain, the characters  you flesh out now can have a lot more juicy drama going on. Plus, everyone loves Pikachu.

Supercharge it: Play with an actual child, and say, “When I was a kid…” often.

4. Start every conversation with, “Do you remember that one time…” Get everyone involved in the nostalgia. Family, friends, pets, randoms on the street, everyone! Disclaimer: Friends may not remember what you are talking about, leaving an awkward silence and you staring dreamily into space, alone. This may lead to everyone thinking you’re crazy.

Supercharge it: Write a memoir.

3. Have a Disney movie marathon. Sing along. Everyone loves a Disney movie. Honestly, this is something I do just about every summer. Bonus Points if you know every word.

Supercharge it: Host the ultimate Disney party: Have each person in attendance dress up as his or her favorite character!

2. Watch an old cartoon.
Before the Jonas Brothers and Miley Cyrus, some different stars dominated the good ol' boobtube. Most of them, however, were animated.

Supercharge it: See if you can name every character and sing the theme song before watching the first episode.

1. Spend time in your attic. Sure, it may be dark and spooky up there, but underneath the layers of dust are some great memories.

Supercharge it: With every little piece of your history you find, say something funny or interesting you remember about it.

What are your favorite ways to embrace the past?
