GirlWhoWrites was a homeschooler who's about to start her freshman year at a public high school. Luckily, she's got a secret weapon: an enormous sarcasm hand. —Sparkitors
Dear Diary,
When someone recently asked me "What are you looking forward to in high school?," my response was, "Ha ha! Not getting eaten!"
The idea that I could possibly like high school hadn't crossed my mind until that point. Even though I've been sweating worse than Chelsea Dagger, I plastered on a smile, and tried to come up with three legit reasons to be excited.
1) High school looks like fun (in Photoshopped pictures)! I mean, look at the brochures, smiling, acne-free kids, happily skipping around with rainbows and butterflies. It all makes you wonder which modeling company they hired.
2) Okay, I'll cut the sarcasm. Um, there's lots of cool, older kid stuff to do: go to parties, go to football games, meet new people, rude people (wait, did I just say that?), scary bullies, and even scarrier people with earrings in their eyelids. Yep, I'm still smiling. This will be the best four years of my life, IF I LIVE THROUGH IT.
3) Face it: All this sweating guarantees me to lose a few pounds in water weight.
But seriously y'all, I'm smiling because I'm trying to appear friendly and non-dangerous to my fellow freshmen. Smiling this long is really very uncomfortable. But between you and me, there are some things that aren't guaranteed to happen freshman year, but I really hope will. Here's my list of (secret) high school dreams:
1) Dating. Yes it's shallow to put this as my first item. But let's face it, who isn't looking forward to this lovely little bonus of high school life?
2) More freedom. With high school comes high levels of responsibility. But high levels of responsibility will come with high levels of freedom. Right?
3) Friendships. I picture an ocean of people, most of whom are just as insecure about starting high school as I am. Bonded by trauma, I'm certain we'll all be BFFs by the end of the year.
4) Clubs. What better way to meet people who share your interests than joining a club? Unless your interests involve hating everyone who has stuff in common with you, or allergy testing monkeys or something. In which case I advise you to attend therapy.
5) My life back. Okay, I'll admit it: Summer is boring. I'll take the irate teachers and blaring alarm clocks over a long, hot siesta any day of the week. I'm looking forward to the parties, the people and the social life in general. Summer is simply three months too long.
Will I get everything I hope for? I guess we'll just have to wait and see. At least I'll have SparkNotes to help me survive.
Hopefully Yours,
GirlWhoWrites
What are you hoping for this year?
