Horrible Road Trip Games

Horrible Road Trip Games

By Pete Croatto

You know those road trips that chew you up, spit you out, and threaten to shatter your sacred familial bond? Well, these games are going to make those road trips even worse. And better. But mostly, worse.

1. Name That Smell: Is it the tuna fish sandwich that your brother shoved between the seat cushions 6,067 miles back in Dubuque, Iowa? Could it be your dad's overpowering B.O. (he refuses to buy deodorant because it's a "gol-dang waste of money")? Or perhaps you've just passed one of New Jersey's many world-class cowhide refineries? Whoever correctly identifies the stench wins a highly effective gas mask (and by gas mask, we mean "just put your hand over your mouth and try not to gag").

2. Floormat Fiesta: If it's been months since mom and dad cleaned out the car, then the stage is set for this delightfully unhygienic game. A blindfolded passenger gets 20 seconds to grope under the front seats for "treasure." Will it be a lollipop that was abandoned during the Clinton administration? A suspiciously soggy Kleenex? An excruciatingly pungent salami sandwich? No matter what you find, you always lose when you play this game!

3. Punch Buggy Battle Royale: We're all familiar with the traditional "punch buggy" game, where you playfully punch your friend on the arm whenever a VW Bug passes. Well, save that for the old folks' home, wimps! With Punch Buggy Battle Royale, it doesn't matter what vehicle you see; just let the fists fly as soon a license plate comes into view! Note: be sure to have mouth guards, a spit bucket, and reliable attorney on hand.

4. Frontier-land: Dad slows the car down to a crawl and kills the AC, and everyone pretends they're on the Oregon Trail. You'll gain an appreciation of how your ancestors traveled while enjoying the concrete boredom and unending agony of America's highways—plus, whoever behaves the most like a character from a James Fennimore Cooper novel gets (drumroll please): scarlet fever! Can you say FUN?!?

Don't you just love road trips with the fam?
