We've never heard of Freelance Whales, but we're totally going to give them a listen. With a name like that, they HAVE to be great. Thanks for the tip, Twilightluvr27!— Sparkitors
These are the songs I'm obsessed with at the moment; I hope you like them as much as I do!
Song: Hannah
Artist: Freelance Whales
I had never heard of Freelance Whales before I found this song free on iTunes. Usually iTunes picks some stinkers, but this song is amazing! It’s kinda like Owl City—and I know that now a zillion of you are going “Oh, no! Not Owl City!” —but give this song a chance! The cool beat and melody are addictive, and the ritardando ("slowing down" for you non-musical Sparklers) in the chorus makes for an intriguing listen.
My favorite lyric: Every now and then, she offers me a lemon Now-and-Later.
Song: You’re the Voice
Artist: John Farnham
You might be saying, "John who?" But this guy. Is epic. Just watch the video. Yes, it’s random. Yes, it’s… cheesy? Technicolor? Awesome-sauce?!?! But the lyrics and the meaning behind them is really powerful. This is the kind of song that inspires you to try and change the world.
My favorite lyric: We’re not gonna sit in silence! We’re not gonna live with fear!
Song: Dynamite
Artist: Taio Cruz
Yes, I know, we Sparklers tend to criticize pop stars and fads and anything “cool.” But this song is just so dancy! It’s got an awesome beat and is so much fun to rock out to. There is a lot of auto-tone, but that’s part of what makes it great!
My favorite lyric: I throw my hands up in the air sometime, saying ay-o. Gotta let-go.
Song: Bitter Heart
Artist: Original by Zee Avi, cover by David Choi
Eeeepp! I love David Choi so much! He's a really good singer and his voice sounds absolutely amazing backed by his acoustic guitar. Bonus: a lot of his covers and some originals are free on his website! This song is one of my favorites by him; whenever I hear it, I imagine I'm sitting on the beach at a bonfire, roasting s’mores and dancing on the sand next to Finn and Mr. Shue and all of us are looking up at the stars with waves crashing softly in the background and…well, I think you get the point.
My favorite lyric: Children spinning around ‘til they fall down down down.
Song: Billionaire (the clean version)
Artist: Travis McCoy featuring Bruno Mars
Yes, another pop/rap-ish song. This one is really good! The lyrics don't belittle anyone or objectify women: they're simply about a guy who wants to be a billionaire so he can buy all of the things he’s never had, and he even talks about using the money to help others. It’s mellow and easy to listen to, and the simple guitar provides a great beat in the background.
My favorite lyric: The world better prepare for when I’m a billionaire/I’d probably take whatever’s left and just split it up/So everyone that I love could have a couple bucks/Go in your pocket, pull out your wallet, and sing.
Song: Feel Good, Inc.
Artist: the Gorillaz
This is a relatively old song, but it's still great. It’s unusual and cool, and you can impress everyone with your mad skills if you memorize all of the lyrics, because they're almost impossible to understand!
My favorite lyric: Don’t stop. Get it, get it/We are your captains in it/Steady watch me navigate/Ahahahahaha.
