For the first 15 minutes of the new ABC Family series Pretty Little Liars (based on the book series), this ed kept thinking,"Self, you canNOT blog Pretty Little Liars for SparkLife! Noooooo! Do not subject the Sparklers to this melodrama and weird lighting that makes everyone look scary and creepy and yuck-nasty!!!!!!!!!! This is the worst show ever to exist, including web-only stuff! Don't! Blog! This! SHOW!"
And then she thought, "But I'll watch it til the next commercial break."
An hour later, she arose from a severely-dented couch feeling ashamed, intrigued, and in love with a 22-year-old high school English teacher, but mostly, confuzzled about what to do next.
Should she blog Pretty Little Liars because it's trashy and addictive, or skip it because it's trashy and addictive? As a temporary compromise, here's a one-breath recap of what you missed last night *inhales*: Secrets, hair extensions, disappearance, travel, affair (implied), deception, makeout, sunglasses, theft, popularity, old friend, creepy text, suggestion, creepy letter, affair (confirmed), creepy email, scandalous secret, makeout guy turns out to be your new English teacher, marijuana, flirtation, girl on girl kiss, evil sister, back rub, guilt, police, creepy text #2, dead body found, food issues, mom doing the nasty with police to save you from going to jail, funeral, makeout with teacher again, blind girl that has something to do with scandal secret, threat, another creepy text. *exhales*
Sound like a show you want to read about? Let's take a vote in the comments! But first, here is this ed's list of pros and cons of doing Pretty Little Recaps to help you make up your mind.
Pros
- Ample stuff to make fun of.
- Get to watch a guilty pleasure show.
- There's not much else to watch over the summer.
- We nommed on eye candy in the form of great clothes and Mr. Fitz, the English teacher.
Cons
- Content is kinda scandalsauce. Are you guys even allowed to watch this show?
- Really icky lighting. Editor thought she was watching a Proactiv commercial at first.
- Show hits you over the head with plot points, because apparently teenagers cannot draw logical conclusions for themselves because they are actually 4. As such, there's no chance of discovering hidden meanings. For example, when Hannah gets caught stealing sunglasses and gets taken to the police station, you notice her mom show the police officer a little leg, and then she tells her daughter she'll take care of it. What we didn't need to see, later in the episode, was the police officer coming home with the mom, slamming her against a wall in a heavy makeout session, and taking her upstairs. Uh, we got it the first time, thank you. (And, as a general rule, we like it better when horizontal hanky panky involving people over 40 is implied. Our minds aren't ready to go there yet.)
- Is trashy and melodramatic and we all might get dumber watching it.
What do you think? Should we do Pretty Little Recaps? (Oh, that's a catchy series name. One more for the pros!)
